Top Amazon Reviews

  • Has promise, but fails in important areas for cameras like Sony A7sii and C100 mkii
First of all, let me say I'm a bit of a spoiled gimbal user since I normally operate a Freefly Movi Pro with a RED Epic-W. I have used a DJI Ronin and an Osmo+ once or twice. I regularly use a Glidecam HD-4000 for small cameras like Sony A7sii. I wanted to use the PIVOT with my a7sii and Canon C100mkii, so that's where I'm coming from experience and camera-wise. There are some nice things about this gimbal, and some awful things. I have not used other small gimbals like the Zhiyun Crane so I don't have an apples-to-apples comparison. Pros: For mirrorless cameras, balancing is easy once you learn to do it properly, way easier than the bigger gimbals. Loved the angled design which lets you see your screen more easily. Loved being able to hold camera in place to where I wanted it and the gimbal hold that position. Modes 1-4 are quite usable, each unlocking an additional movement. Did not try timelapse. Tripod at the foot held the rig steady when I set it down. Cons: Despite a good balance, all my footage has a very slight wobble, like the gimbal didn't quite correct the motion in time and was off by a millisecond. Sometimes it's barely perceptible, sometimes obvious. Of course, I could have had a faulty unit. The Ikan Gimbal app is downright awful compared to Freefly and DJI's. Poorly organized, no descriptions of modes or settings, no roll lock, no monitors to tell you which motors are working hard, no motor kill switch. Sometime when I switched values on a 1-10 scale, it would display 49, which should not even be possible. The PIVOT manual is very barebones. English is ok, but there are not descriptions of the modes at all. To learn how to balance it, I checked out their YouTube page (the video was pretty good). Follow focus the manual describes is not included, and I couldn't even find it on the B&H or Amazon. Proper battery charger and extra batteries are also not included. With a camera mounted, this thing is super top heavy and off balance. I have medium sized hands and am pretty strong but even so I got strained holding the center column, which is a bit wide for one handed operation. Adding weights or something on the bottom might help. Wanted to use this with Canon C100 mkii, which they advertise the gimbal can handle. It just BARELY was able to be balanced when I lowered the camera down as far as it would go. However, this left me without an option for audio because I couldn't put my Rode VideoMic on top. Compared to similar products, seems pretty pricy at seven hundred, considering you don't get a proper battery charger, follow focus, and would likely need the dual handles for heavier rigs. Conclusion: When I saw this gimbal announced at NAB 2018, I wanted to try it right away since it looked like I could use it with my two main cameras interchangeably. After two days of testing, I feel uncomfortable using it for a client given the wobble in my footage. Maybe with a firmware update or two and a price drop, it might be ready for professional production. ... show more

  • Happy with the gimbal
When I first saw this announced I was fairly excited for a high payload gimbal that was angled so I could see my screen. I've used other non angled one and found that it was such a bother to view the screen or I needed to attach a monitor, which took more time to set up. I mainly use this with my Canon 1DX Mark II with 16-35mm lens. Other gimbals I've tried can't support the height of 1DX, but the PIVOT allowed me to adjust the height and easily balanced my main set-up. I let my friend borrow it for a wedding and he's convinced he "needs" one as well. On another note initially I noticed my footage had some shake, but when I changed the camera payload setting to "Light Weight" in the app my footage became smooth. Who would've figured a 1DX would be considered light weight. ... show more
