Description

From Children of a Lesser God to Dancing with the Stars, to Switched at Birth, Academy Award– and Golden Globe–winning actress Marlee Matlin shares her incredible life story in a moving and often surprising memoir, I’ll Scream Later. More than twenty years after becoming the youngest woman to win a Best Actress Oscar for her stunning performance as Sarah Norman, the pupil-turned- custodian at a school for the Deaf in Children of a Lesser God, Marlee Matlin continues to be an inspirational force of nature. A working mother, wife, activist, and role model, she takes readers on the frank and touching journey of her life, from the sudden and permanent loss of her hearing at eighteen months old to the highs and lows of Hollywood, her battles with addiction, and the unexpected challenges of being thrust into the spotlight as an emissary for the Deaf community. With uncompromising honesty, she reveals the shocking incidents of molestation that took her years to reconcile; her passionate and tumultuous relationship with Oscar winner William Hurt; her romances with Rob Lowe, Richard Dean Anderson, and David E. Kelley; and much more. As fresh and invigorating as her memorable television roles on Seinfeld, The West Wing, The L Word, and her dazzling turn on Dancing with the Stars, Marlee Matlin’s self- portrait captures the chutzpah and humor of a celebrated actress who continues to defy all expectations. • Engaging Reading about a Fascinating Actor
I’ve always liked Marlee Matlin and loved the movie Children of a Lesser God. She does a fantastic job of narrating her own story, growing up and making her way to Hollywood! It was really interesting to learn how her first film was made, her explosive relationship with William Hurt and how she feels about being a leader in the Deaf community. Also, I had not recalled her struggles with chemical dependency and making it to sobriety. Worthwhile reading about a strong and inspiring person! ... show more

  • such an Interesting Read
Loved reading her story. She told us about the good and the bad. She has overcome so much and did it with grace.

  • Great Book!
Excellent book, great story! Probably the only thing I found a bit off putting was the graphic detail of abuse, this is not a book for anyone under 18 years of age because of that part of the book. However, the book is very inspirational and one of the main messages for me from Marlee's book was anything is possible, and you don't know what you are capable of achieving until you try! ... show more

  • Ok, needs and editor
I was so excited to read this book and I have always counted Marlee Matlin on my short list of people I would like to have dinner with. But this book didn't deliver. There was no flow at all. Even the good parts just kind of appears and then ended. And while she is an actress so of course there would be mention of other famous people, at times the feel of excessive name dropping (all of whom loved her) was a bit much. I would have liked to read more about her decisions as a deaf woman and her disagreements with the deaf community. Some of the most interesting parts were about her work with closed captioning. I can understand wanting to be known for more than being a deaf actor, but let's face it, it is a big part of who she is. All in all, it is interesting and a quick read. Taken for what it's worth, I am glad I read it. ... show more

  • I'll Screen Later
This is a wonderful book. It was so good I couldnt put it down. It is the story of Marlee Matlins life. How she wasn't born Deaf by it came on later in her young childhood. And how she fought to be recognised as an actress. Not a Deaf Actress, but an actress. There are all sorts of ascting jobs she has done that I never knew about. And now thanks to the internet, I can go back and find them. I've never seen "Children of a Lesser God", but now I want to see it. I work with Blind and Deaf children and I still learned a lot about the deaf from this book. Marlee has had an amazing life and I enjoyed reading about it. I'll Scream Later ... show more
