  • For $200, not expecting the moon, but expected to be able to use wifi and usb3 port at the same time
UPDATE 10/9/21 DO NOT BUY!!! I am dropping the rating to 1 stars. I do not recommend this product at all and am looking to return it. After running 25ft of cat 5 to this machine to be able to use the internet and the usb3 slot at the same time, I am giving up. Now it totally loses internet connection (it is the only device I am having this issue with) and this is despite being hardwired into the network. The wireless adapter in the machine itself becomes disabled so that even when I disconnect the monitor from the usb3 port, it does not work. In order to get it to work I have to completely restart the computer. This has happened several times in the past few days, and always while one of my kiddos is working on a homework assignment. Both lost assignments because this this thing stopped working while they were trying to submit their work. Let me be clear - there is very little installed on this computer that wasn't there when I got it. Very disappointing for a machine that we haven't had for quite a month. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- **UPDATE 9/21/21** I did end up finding a 4th option work around for the issue I mentioned in my review below. I ran a 25ft ethernet cable from my router to the laptop station. That allowed me to hook the monitor to the usb 3 port (which kills the WiFi) and connect to the internet at the same time. It's not elegant, but for anyone who has run into the same issue, it was a $8 solution that worked like a charm. The workstation now works for it's intended purpose. But buyer beware, don't using the usb3 slot if you need to connect to Wi-Fi. -------------------------------- I bought this to use as a workstation for my kiddos so they could complete their online assignments for school. At under $200, I wasn't expecting the moon but thought it would suit their needs for now. It worked great for 4 days. The issue started when I tried to hook an external monitor to it. First I tried using the mini HDMI connecter for the monitor. The issue with that is the connection is unstable. It would disconnect with even the slightest bump. As a work around, I tried getting a vga-usb adapter so I could connect to the monitor to the usb port. What I found out is I can only achieve the full resolution of the monitor if I use the usb 3 port. Didn't think that would be an issue. Well it isn't unless you also plan on connecting to Wi-Fi at the same time. Anytime I connect to the usb 3 port, the Wi-Fi disconnects. So don't plan on using your Wi-Fi if you connect anything to the usb 3 port. What is the point of having it if it essentially renders the laptop useless for anything online. :-( . That leaves me with the following options: Have a nice clear picture on a larger monitor, but not be able to connect to the internet Deal with 800 x 600 on a larger monitor, but have the ability to connect to the internet Simply use the laptop and forget about any external monitor. At the price point, you may be better off getting one of the Chrome books. The laptop by itself isn't awful, but not being able to do something as simple as hook a monitor to it is a big disappointment. Not sure if I will be keeping it. ... show more

  • Fine, except for terrible wired & wireless networking
I bought this because I was looking for an inexpensive laptop with an Ethernet port that I could use to troubleshoot networking issues around the house. I liked that it has a panel you can open to install an extra 2.5" SATA drive (SSD or hard disk). I have no complaints about the build quality either, for the price it seems like a nicely put-together laptop with a passable display, usable keyboard and touchpad. Where the Hyundai Thinnote-A totally fell apart on me was in its networking capabilities. WiFi is limited to 802.11N, and it repeatedly had trouble connecting to my Eero 6 Pro access point. On Linux (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS), some custom driver settings were needed to make it connect at all, and even when WiFi was connected it was extremely, unreasonably slow. On Windows, more often than not it would just flat out refuse to connect. The wired networking situation was, unbelievably, even worse. The Ethernet port is connected to the system via an internal USB connection, and is limited to 100Mbps "fast" Ethernet. This wouldn't have been too much of a problem in and of itself, but more often than not, both on Windows and Linux, the Ethernet adapter would fail to initialize due to some kind of USB error. On the first laptop I received, it seemed to work fine at first, and then stopped, so I assumed I'd received a bad unit, and I returned it in exchange for another one. But the second unit did exactly the same thing: the Ethernet port would work sometimes, but mostly not at other times. Given that I specifically bought this laptop for its built-in Ethernet support, the unsolvable networking problems were a deal-breaker for me, and I ended returning the replacement unit as well. In the end I bought a slightly lower-priced laptop and a separate, very inexpensive USB 3.0 gigabit Ethernet adapter, and both worked flawlessly out of the box. ... show more

  • I really like it
It's small and lightweight. Just what I was looking for. My wife's 15 inch HP is a behemoth. Really heavy. This one has a nice bright screen. It's surprising how bright it gets. It's reasonably fast to boot, considering it only has 4gb of RAM. I'm trying to find out if that is expandable at all. I'm guessing probably not. Anyway, it does exactly what I needed it to do. My particular browser of choice takes an age to load. But Epic Privacy Browser is a rather extremely hardened version of Chrome. Google does not live on my machine. Nor does Amazon or any type of social media whatsoever. I have Epic Privacy Browser, VLC media player, NordVPN, and Audio Inventory Converter to rip my CDs and convert them to FLAC files to play over my WiFi speaker network and that's it's. 4 programs, no more. Before I ever connected to my WiFi network, I spent an entire day locking down, and disabling, as many Microsoft features as possible. Starting with Microsoft Edge. I am totally in love with this little tyke. ... show more

  • Don't Buy
I work in IT, so knowing the specs, I wasn't expecting anything brilliant. That being said, I intended to use this machine for casual tasks like reading, or watching YouTube, maybe writing a few docs here and there. The usual. That being said, This laptop is stupid slow for 2021. The display is not great. It is like looking through some kind of mesh screen lol. I tried playing some YouTube videos, and, well, they played with some buffering and graininess. The audio is not the best, but "it works". Other than that, I think the worst part about this thing is the construction quality. I press the plastic in a little near the mouse pad, and it creaks. I try to open and close the lid, and it makes this terrible creaking, plasticky snapping noise that makes me scared to open or close the laptop at all. I think for 250 dollars, you are better off with a Chromebook or finding something else used. I would say this is ok as a last resort, but honestly it wasn't even worth only a day's wait. This was a box of disappointment, and makes me question if I should ever try one of Hyundai's cars....Ewwww ... show more
