  • It's a project
As it comes it is a mess. Rough wood painted with opaque brown stain, warped blade, too tight, etc. Scrape off the stain, sand to 400, add some detailing on the corners, file the mouth a bit wider (edge of file, only next to the bed where the blade is) oil it up, and it looks pretty nice. Grind a proper bevel, flatten the back of the blade (it had a twist so I only did the last inch), finish the sides of the blade. And what??!! The last 13 mm of the blade is a strip of welded on hard steel, RC62+! If I had known the rest was tin can steel I'd have tried to hammer out the twist! Too late now. Anyway, it's really sharp now. An hour of work and it's actually pretty nice. No work and it's trash. Choose based on your skill level. By the way, their pic shows the wedge on the wrong side of the blade. It won't work that way, so don't do that. ... show more

  • Give something else a try.
The blade isn't bad steel. Sharpened well. The block itself was poorly cut and--even though it was in the house the whole time--quickly deformed to the point the blade couldn't be removed without the use of some locking pliers and a clamp. I guess I could try and mill out some wood so that the blade would fit in again, but the bottom isn't flat any it's more trouble than it would be worth. For about a few days it worked fine as a little trim plane but it's not worth much more than decoration. ... show more

  • Oh man you really get what you pay for -- it's hard to imagine this being useful for anything
This is far too small to be useful. I was skeptical of the wooden construction from the start, and indeed that vastly reduces the usability as well. The blade locks in using a wedge, which barely works. The wood is not flat or heavy enough. And the whole thing is only like 1.5 inches wide. Very useless. ... show more
