This is everything I dream of in a novel.” ―Ava Reid, 1 New York Times bestselling author of A Study in Drowning and Lady Macbeth It’s the height of the industrial revolution and ten years into Lenore’s marriage to steel magnate Henry, their relationship has soured. When Henry’s ambitions take them from London to the remote British moorlands to host a hunting party, a shocking carriage accident brings the mysterious Carmilla into their lives. Carmilla, who is weak and pale during the day but vibrant at night. Carmilla, who stirs up something deep within Lenore. And before long, girls from the local villages fall sick, consumed by a terrible hunger . . . As the day of the hunt draws closer, Lenore begins to unravel, questioning the role she has been playing all these years. Torn between regaining her husband’s affection and the cravings Carmilla has awakened, soon Lenore will uncover a darkness in her household that will place her at terrible risk. Read more

  • Absolutely fantastic! Met and exceeded expectations!
I definitely understand why this book was so anticipated. The story itself completely pulls you in. The characters are exceptional and help create a vibrant plot of twists and turns. The ending is perfect. I have read a lot of historical fiction and this one stands out for the way the language and writing style completely engulf you in the era. I felt as though I had spent the last few days completely immersed in Lenore’s time. The stifling expectations placed on women were fully felt. As was the joy once Lenore decided she could want and take back her life. Excellently written and I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a gritty historical fiction. ... show more

  • A slow-creeping hunger of a novel.
A slow-creeping hunger that eventually consumes you until you have no choice but to embrace it - or die unfulfilled. Hungerstone, a Carmilla retelling, is a perfect read for fans of A Dowry of Blood (or An Education in Malice, another Carmilla retelling) and other vampire narratives. Slow to pick up momentum, at no point are we - the reader - ever certain of how the events in this book will unfold. Lenore, an unappreciated wife of a steel owner, meets Carmilla - thrown from her carriage and in need of care - during their trip to their isolated mansion. Locked alone with no one to talk to other than Carmilla, who slowly infects her mind with desires and wants that she’s never before allowed herself to feel, leaves Lenore with a hunger that she cannot help but do whatever she can to sate - at any cost. My only complaint within this book is that at times I felt the narrative moved almost too slowly with Lenore as our main character, where things would happen in the narrative and yet she would do nothing about it. In many ways I, as the reader, almost felt like Carmilla - waiting for Lenore to make her decision and being less than patient in the process of doing so. A few times it felt like things had paused in the storyline simply to allow Lenore to ignore her surroundings and do nothing, but overall I found this story to be compelling and had to read until the end to find out how - exactly - Lenore would finally slack her hunger and find freedom. A huge thank you to the author, NetGalley, and Zando for providing this e-ARC. ... show more

  • the carmilla retelling that we deserve
ahh, carmilla has needed a great retelling for a while. i was always a fan of the concept of the original - lesbian vampires? come on - but i felt like the original work by le fanu was a slog. this? no. in fact, i'd go so far as to say this book was compulsively readable. this is exactly the kind of female rage book that i wanted to exist in the literary world. (though, let's be real, i will never have too many female rage books.) hungerstone gives us lenore, a woman who has spent her life struggling to make out a world for herself. she has the social standing but she's penniless - she makes an arrangement to marry for money, her husband for status. with the expectations that she must act like a Good Wife (gross), her husband quickly decides once they pick an ailing carmilla up off the road that he's had enough. but lenore is so drawn to carmila that it's palpable and honestly, pretty hot. carmilla constantly challenges the rigid rules that lenore has ascribed to herself and have been ascribed to her by the confines of a patriarchal society. carmilla clocks her husband's infidelity, suggests that maybe he isn't the perfect match he seems, especially when he keeps plying lenore to eat sweets covered in a substance that definitely isn't powdered sugar. i loved the evolution of lenore's rage. i love that she errs on the side of what is polite in society until so much is thrust upon her that she explodes - she explodes at her husband, at the woman she believes him to be cheating with. and from there, she learns out to cleverly navigate the world for her own gain instead of her own survival. ... show more

  • Dark, Vampy, and Delicious
Lenore and Carmilla are the physical embodiment of feminine rage and I ate it UP! In my head, Nethershaw manor resembled what the house from The Haunting of Hill House looked like when Nell goes back at the end - old, dingy, damp, and unloving. At first, I wasn't sure where or how the sapphic love was going to come into play, but boy did we get there! I enjoyed that the scenes between Lenore and Carmilla weren't outwardly explicit but more so focused on the feeling of letting go and giving into one's wants and desires. The way in which we get to watch Lenore slowly piece together all of the puzzle pieces of her life was incredible, in my opinion. From the pastilles, to the secrets both Henry and Cora were hiding, to letting go and finally feeding that hunger within, it was executed perfectly. I also really loved getting to know what the menus were each time Lenore sat to eat; I found myself looking up almost everything she ate to see what it was and what it looked like. If you love dark, vampy, strong women who get sweet revenge after the world has wronged them - you need to pick this one up! Thank you to NetGalley, Zando Publishing, and Kat Dunn for an early copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own! ... show more

  • Seductive, captivating, and brilliant!
Love the sexy sapphic vampire story. Set on a gothic estate on the British moors, this oozes atmosphere, female rage, and sex appeal. Absolutely delicious!

  • Excellent retelling of Carmilla
Kat Dunn's HUNGERSTONE pulled me in with the very first sentence: "It starts with blood." And it never let me go. The writing is well crafted--beautiful, even--and the characters are well developed. The novel also has a strong sense of atmosphere, delivering on its gothic setting. The most important thing here is that it delivers on its promise of a sapphic retelling of Carmilla, giving readers a satisfying, obsessive sapphic vampire story. ... show more
