Description

A New York Times Bestseller From New York Times bestselling author Fiona Davis, an utterly addictive new novel that will transport you from New York City’s most glamorous party to the labyrinth streets of Cairo and back. Egypt, 1936: When anthropology student Charlotte Cross is offered a coveted spot on an archaeological dig in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, she leaps at the opportunity. That is until an unbearable tragedy strikes. New York City, 1978: Nineteen-year-old Annie Jenkins is thrilled when she lands an opportunity to work for former Vogue fashion editor Diana Vreeland, who’s in the midst of organizing the famous Met Gala, hosted at the museum and known across the city as the “party of the year.” Meanwhile, Charlotte is now leading a quiet life as the associate curator of the Met’s celebrated Department of Egyptian Art. She’s consumed by her research on Hathorkare—a rare female pharaoh dismissed by most other Egyptologists as unimportant. The night of the gala: One of the Egyptian art collection’s most valuable artifacts goes missing, and there are signs Hathorkare’s legendary curse might be reawakening. Annie and Charlotte team up to search for the missing antiquity, and a desperate hunch leads the unlikely duo to one place Charlotte swore she’d never return: Egypt. But if they have any hope of finding the artifact, Charlotte will need to confront the demons of her past—which may mean leading them both directly into danger. Read more

  • Fiona Davis does it again.
This is another good read with twists and turns and Egyptian history. As always, wonderfully interwoven with mystery and history.

  • Great Book - One of Her Best!
Loved this one - I think it is my favorite of all Fiona Davis' books - though I had loved The Doll House. Fast paced - between The Metropolitan Museum and Cairo and Luxor, it was very interesting - and I loved the central characters - and also the bit player of Diana Vreeland. The author does a great job with real life intertwined with fiction. Looking forward to her next book! ... show more

  • too many coincidences
I think Fiona’s writing is eloquent, the dialogue is great and discussion unique. I found that this storyline was based too much off of coincidence, although we’re reading fiction here, there are things that are too unbelievable for me. I’m not talking about the flash, I loved that part.

  • interesting and a good story
Good story with an interesting plot about Egyptian antiquities. Well worth the read. It definitely makes me want to read more by the author!

  • Well worth the wait
Once again Fiona Davis utilizes New York City as a key character (in the 70’s) to a riveting story bringing two very diverse women on a quest; one accomplished and older, the second just starting out in life. The beauty of Ms. Davis’s novels are the characters are always fresh, interesting and the desire to reach the end of the story keeps one reading just one more page…… I do hope this novel is being shopped for a film; it would be much better than anything out there right now. Waiting two years since her last novel has proven well worth it. ... show more

  • GOOD READ
A different story, but seem probable. A little hard to place everyone at fort but reads well and keeps a person wondering. I liked it

  • fascinating
And creative storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the main characters previous life as well as her current life. The author brilliantly wove new characters into the story as well as other characters, who then met an interacted with each other. Egypt as well as the Metropolitan Museum of art were delightful backdrops to this well written story. ... show more
