  • Not the best on PBS but still enjoyable
Hotel Portofino does not have the charm or wholesomeness of other PBS series like The Durrells or All Things Great and Small, but it is still enjoyable, nonetheless. I particularly enjoy the scenery, vintage costumes and set designs. Some characters, like the hotel staff are charming and interesting but some of the main characters (and actors) I find less captivating. The subject matter gets heavier in the 2nd/3rd seasons, mostly a result of historical events at the time. While the birth/rise of fascism in Italy in the 1920's is important subject matter, it doesn't add up to a lighter, wholesome series some PBS viewers may be seeking. ... show more

  • Season 3 Turns Dark and Uninteresting
There is a significant shift in tone in the third season of Hotel Portofino. The sets at the hotel are noticeably darker evident by the darker lighting and paint colors in the hotel lobby and kitchen. Gone is the light airiness. The intro music also turns sinister as the episodes go on. There are no hotel guests as the action takes place in the off season, so we are left only with the on going financial, marital, and political drama, all increased due to the time jump to 1929, without much amusing distraction. And, it’s not even drama the audience has any emotional stake in because the character development is so lacking. Well, development in general is lacking. Personally, I found the darker themes and feel disappointing. I would much prefer this style of series set in sunny Italy to take me away from it all and provide enjoyable entertainment with the bright cheerful sets and entertaining guests of Seasons One and Two—light drama that all works out in the end. We all know what is coming historically for Italy and the world in 1929, but couldn’t we have just enjoyed a bit more time in the sun and fun? There’s enough dark drama series out there that do dark drama better. I was hoping this show would be more of a sunny and cheerful escape the way fluff entertainment should be. ... show more
