  • Nice Kit !
Along with the info available, this is a nice kit. The eyepiece alone helped find gunk when I thought I got it cleaned. The Grandfather Clock is running fine ! Many thanks !

  • Kit is excellent, but I chickened out
The instructions that came with the kit are impeccable. All items contained in the kit are quality and as described. Further, there is a well-made tutorial video, along with detailed (20 page!) written instructions. Or, if you are too impatient to read the author’s thorough work, there is also a summary document that is a faster read. Sadly though, it turns out that the sophistication behind the method used to secure my clock’s hands, and the method used to secure the clock workings to the carcass, were beyond my mechanical ability to remove. I own a grandfather clock, stamped with “made in Germany”. I could remove the minute hand without issue, which was secured by a nut. But the hour hand was locked in place by some sort of cotter pin and square nut assembly that, try as I might, I could not figure out how to remove. I was afraid I’d end up breaking something. Even though the hour hand could not be removed, I wondered if I could still remove the clock’s workings. I took a look. Rather than simple screws, there are fancy nuts and bolts and a wooden track of some sort that apparently allows the user to slide out both the mechanism and the clock face from the clock’s carcass. I would have to remove the clock’s chime assembly, in order to make room for the clock’s workings to slide out. And, it seems I would have to pivot the entire assembly 90 degrees in order to clear the chime’s mounting wood. While I didn’t want to give up, I simply decided that I was in real risk of damaging the clock with my rudimentary guesses on next steps. I ended up following the instructions to clean and lubricate the clock using the methods described by the seller. Only, I did the cleaning against the rear of the mechanism only (as I couldn’t access the front of the mechanism while it was mounted). And, I performed the cleaning while the mechanism was upright in its cabinet, not laying flat on a work bench. So, I suppose it is possible that the minimal oil I applied, according to the seller’s instructions, would just follow gravity and not stay in the lubrication points as intended. The clock is running and I would like to think the lubrication has helped - it was working prior to my work, only I was winding it more frequently than it did in its younger days. I think the seller did everything possible to enable my success here, and I give highest marks for the purchase. ... show more

  • Worked like a charm
Used it on an Emperor clock that hadn't been oiled in over 30 years. The clock wouldn't chime or strike, but after using this kit and following the oiling instructions, the clock works perfectly. Very grateful to have found this.

  • Good for First Timers
My grandfather clock, which I had not oiled in 40 years, would only sound one time on any hour. I took it to a clock repair shop and they said it had to be rebuilt and would cost $900. That was ridiculous, so I removed the movement myself (it was easy to do) and purchased the Horace Whitlock oiling kit after watching a video of how to oil a clock movement, and where they recommended that kit. After following the instructions to clean each oil well on the movements sides and apply oil, I applied the Whitlock oil and now the grandfather clock is working great and I saved $900, well $2700 if you count all four clocks I later did. From the Howard Miller site, I read that a clock movement should be oiled every 2 years and after the experience and confidence gained from oiling the grandfather movement, I ended up cleaning and oiling all 4 of our mechanical clocks with the Whilock kit. Three of those clocks were not working and after the cleaning and oiling they worked great! The kits comes with clock oil, a wooden stick to clean the movements oil wells, 5 tiny metal spoons or probes of various sizes to collect and then apply the oil, and oil basin, a small amount of grease, and a cleaning cloth. The cleaning cloth is a one time use. Instead of the provided wood stick, which I found to be to blunt to effectively reach into the tiny oil wells, I found that sharp wooden toothpicks was a better solution to cleaning the oil wells of collected congealed oil and dust. The metal spoons or probes, after dipping in the oil, collect the most minuscule amount of oil on their ends, and when touching the movements oil well or bearing, the oil transfers instantly from the probe to the bearing. The small vile of oil is probably enough to do a lifetime of clock oiling as so little is used. In the end, if I had to do it again, I could save some money and just buy the synthetic clock oil and use wooden toothpicks to clean and a metal sewing pin to apply vs buying the entire kit. ... show more

  • Nice kit
It came with pretty much what I needed to oil the grandfather clock.

  • Brought a nearly 30-year old grandfather clock back to life
I built a grandfather clock in 1993 from a kit I purchased from the Emperor Clock Company. Over the past couple of years, the clock began having problems with the chimes operating properly as well as stopping running prematurely. Upon reading a bit about these problems, it became clear that the clock needed cleaning and oiling. After procrastinating for a couple of months, my desire to once again hear the chimes overcame my laziness, so I went looking for the appropriate products to get it back into service. My search landed on the Horace Whitlock Clock Oil Kit, which I promptly ordered. The materials sent, which include a set of oil pins to fit any kind of oil point you might encounter, are of high quality. Especially valued are the detailed instructions on how to carry out the cleaning. As the instructions said they would be, the bearing points were typically coated with tiny amounts of worn out oil, and so I cleaned them all and added micro amounts of the clock oil as instructed. I was skeptical that minute bits of decomposed oil cleaned and replaced by new oil would restore the clock's operations. But, lo and behold, once reassembled into the clock case, this old treasure was once again ticking and chiming like new. Removing the clock works from the case was a bit intimidating, but it really is essential to getting the job done correctly. In the end it all went very smoothly, and the clock is likely to keep on ticking well after I've stopped! ... show more
