  • Good alternative
Color: Black Size: Large
I carry mountaineering snowshoes with aggressive teeth, as well as 2" Black Diamond crampons. I now carry, and have used these 'trail spikes' as an 'in between'. I find them easy to put on and take off, they provide reasonable traction on glare ice and packed snow, and here's the reason they are worth the extra weight in the pack: When I am exhausted on the way down, and have tripped over 2" crampons many times... I don't stumble with these. It's like having some protection, without the drawbacks. If you are cross shopping brands, I suggest you buy a pair that have the velcro band across the top, and the toe bar. It helps to keep the assembly from twisting on the boot. I'm satisfied with these, and continue to carry them. ... show more

  • They run a little larger than Kahtoola microspikes
Color: Black Size: Medium
These are sturdy and work well on icy trails. They're not quite as easy to take on and off as my Kahtoola microspikes are, because of the velcro strap, which I'm not sure is necessary. They're also a little larger than the Kahtoolas. I wear a size 9.5 (40) Keen women's boot for lightweight hiking most of the time, but on frigid winter treks I wear a size 11 (42) insulated Keen boot. The size M Hillsounds are a little too big on the lightweight boots but the Kahtoolas fit fine. I can also stretch the Kahtoolas over the heavier boots but the Hillsounds are a better fit for them. I've used Kahtoolas for many years with great satisfaction. Last year, I got a new pair in the updated design to replace my broken 8-year-old ones, which were the old style. The rubber snapped on the new ones after about 5 uses. Kahtoola sent me a new pair, but I'm wary and got some Hillsounds for a backup pair. I can't attest to the durability of the Hillsounds as I haven't used them long enough to judge. ... show more

  • Just bought my second pair..
Color: Black Size: X-Large
I have rated these a three. I think if you were using them for light climbing (up and down) they would work just fine. The design flaw is where the chains connect to the rubber ring. Too much stress and the rubber breaks, leaving the chain hanging and they become unusable. My suggestion is always to throw a couple of cable ties in your gear and you can quickly and easily do some running repairs to get you up and running. For what I was using them for, they couldn't handle the stress This is the second pair I have ordered. Tried another brand but they didn't last. Unfortunately I ended up having to return this pair as well. I have an extremely steep lawn, and I use these when I hand-mow it (side-to-side). Bought my last set in 2014. The last pair ended up being held together by cable-ties, and I decided to replace them. Walking sideways on the hill as I mow puts a different stress on them than they were designed for, so (in retrospect) I'm happy that the first pair lasted as long as they did. Subsequent replacements did NOT last... Ordered a replacement pair. Used them once. One of the rubber connection rings broke, as per the picture above. Customer service was OK as I ordered another pair. Used the replacement pair once. Used them once. Breakage in the same place. Have returned them and asked for a refund as I try and work out my next option. ... show more

  • Amazing traction in the worst conditions!
Color: Black Size: X-Large
I bought these for my husband as a Christmas gift after doing research on whether the Kahtoola Microspikes or the Hillsound Trail Crampons were better. My research showed Hillsound had the edge with more spikes and longer spikes. We've had crazy weather this winter and my husband used them the other night to sand our very steep driveway in water-on-ice conditions. He's a man of few words, but his statement "These are amazing!" says it all. ... show more

  • Excellent Crampon For Occasional User
Color: Black Size: X-Large
I am not an experienced ice or mountain climber. I bought these crampons for trips to New Zealand and Iceland, and I also keep them in the car when doing winter photography in the Sierras. On my most recent trip to Iceland, they were superb on all sorts of hard ice, glare ice, wet and waterfall ice, snow, frozen ground, and rocky conditions. They are easy to take on and off (do yourself a favor and practice in the comfort of your living room, with at least glove liners on), seem very durable, and made all the difference for safety on this trip. Our glacier guides provided similar crampons to visitors who did not bring their own, and were complimentary of the quality of the Hillsound. I bought these after researching the recommendations of other standard brands. These were less expensive than some of the other brands and, based on many reviews, apparently of higher quality. The red model is not as bright as some competitive orange ones, but it’s bright enough to see in dim light and against dark boots. Very satisfied. ... show more

  • A RUSTWorthy Winter Companion
Color: Black Size: Large
I bought these because I am in between sizes with the Kahtoola brand and when I wear my mountaineering boots (larger size) it causes problems with them. Also the reviews were great. They fit nicely, and seem to have a good design, however after 3 ... THREE! uses, they have rusted over. I have had a handful of pairs of microspikes from a few manufacturers and never had rust issues. I just assumed they would be rust-proof, since the entire point of them is to provide traction on ice/snow, but they are not. My Kahtoola's lasted about 3 years and they didn't have a single spot of rust. In the attached picture the darker areas on the Kahtoola's are actually light brown dirt. ... show more
