  • It's not 4:3, even though the back cover indicates that it is
The other two people that complained about this are right. It's 16:9 widescreen, which I wouldn't mind so much, except for a noticeable problem with the video quality, which was clearly a transfer problem from whichever masters they used. In general, the video quality is quite good, and I didn't even mind that it's full screen so much. Without my glasses it seemed fine, then after I put them on about 20 minutes into "The Gathering," I noticed a weird and recurring anomaly: scenes where there are close ups on the faces of the actors results in a blurriness and hazing of their skin as they or the camera moves. I was befuddled. I've never seen that before, and there's even an advisory when the disc first begins playing that indicates such video imperfections are due to the age of the series. What it really is though is the digital transfer process these guys used, without having gone back to the original camera film negatives apparently. (I'd be a little surprised if this series was shot on videotape rather than film, but Paramount and CBS had a lot of fun with those headaches when they decided to remaster ST: TNG and realized they had to produce all of the special effects for the whole series all over again from scratch because of how those sequences were created for tape instead of film for broadcasting back in the 90s. DS9 and VOY still haven't been released on Blu-ray for that very reason.) Overall though, for forty bucks, I'm not going to complain. I'll just watch the episodes without my glasses so I won't get annoyed by the facial blurring in some sequences, though be advised that as of now I have only watched the first episode. I think it's enough to give me a good idea of what to expect as I work my way through the series though. It's just a shame that the original 4:3 set of the full series is overpriced and sells for twice what they should be selling for at this point in time. It's an old show at this point. And I do not like that the company that released this new set can't even get the video format listed correctly on their back cover. How could they have allowed a mistake like that to get through without correcting it so people know what they're actually buying? ... show more

  • Voices do not synch to lips, Fuzzy Video Quality
The voices do not match up with the lips talking. This is so far on every episode. Also, the video quality is bootleg. It does not look like it was produced using authorized originals. It is pretty fuzzy, not very clear. Between the bad voice-lip synching and the fuzzy video, I have given up on watching my set. Very disappointing. I called VEI, the company that produced this set, and they wanted me to mail it to Canada, at my own cost. The inside flap of this set says to call them, and they will resolve any problem, but that is as dishonest as this set is authentic. Postage to Canada for this boxed set would be at least $25.00. VEI has a U.S. Office that they mail products out of, but they stick it to the customers that complain about the quality of this bootleg set. This really looks like bootleg quality, 3rd Generation transfer. Since it is made in Canada, I guess they can get away with it. ... show more

  • Great to have the full series, vid quality not so hot.
Nice to have the entire series here, but in order to make it appear "widescreen" they cropped the top and bottom of shots so you lose 10-20% of the visual. Quality is not great, not terrible...basically about as good as it was when it originally aired. If you're a diehard Highlander fan this is nice to have for the price (I've only had seasons 4-5 on DVD previously), but if you're looking for quality images stick with the DVD sets they released several years back. ... show more

  • Don't lose your head over this one
It's half the price roughly of what the other versions are... But it's also half the picture. It doesn't state it but is cropped from the original four by 3 aspect ratio to 16 by 9. Meaning that the top and bottom of the screen are cut off. And the first few seasons do not appear to have any of the special features carried over as well ... show more

  • Do. Not. Buy. Highlander Fans.
I thought I'd save money by buying the whole series rather than season collections. Guess what? For this release, they've cropped the top and bottom of the screen to turn a 1:33 image into widescreen BUT didn't invest in a good upgrade of the resulting image, so all the scenes are very fuzzy. Like "I need to put my glasses on" fuzzy. I'm not sure I've ever seen a transfer this bad. Who wants a 1:33 series cropped for widescreen, anyway, so I probably would have been unsatisfied in any event, but the image here is, for real, unwatchable. Oh, but they did optically enhance the opening credits so that those look good and the episodes have to start before you realize how bad they are. That was thoughtful, wasn't it? ... show more

  • In the end there can only be one.....
Nice to own Highlander the complete series at a budget price. Discs come in sleeves similar to what you would find in a CD/DVD binder. The case is pretty sturdy. The thing I like about the packaging is you do not have to worry about loose discs because they are packed securely in the DVD case. One thing that was also nice, VEI even has their customer support # on a sticker inside of the DVD case. Not very many companies would take the time to do that. The set also include the complete series of Highlander the Raven as a bonus. Several have made comments about the video quality. At times it looks good and other times it looks poor, especially on close ups of the face. Upon disc loading there is a message about the technical anomalies and the age of the video. It's more the crop job of the video and a seemingly low video bitrate. It's watchable but at times far from DVD quality. Others have noted the 4:3 on the case. I knew from reading reviews this was a 16:9 release which it shows that on the slipcover I received and then 4:3 on the case itself. As far as the Raven series is considered, disc 1 has 6 hours of video (8 episodes) on it, that is a really long runtime for a DVD.... The 3 stars is because VEI could of added a few extra discs to the set, put fewer episodes on a disc and released the show with better video quality. In the end, it's watchable and a budget priced release with some obvious flaws. ... show more
