Description

A skirmish wargame of gothic horror during the Napoleonic Wars written by the Joseph A. McCullough, the award-winning creator of Frostgrave. As the wars of Napoleon ravage Europe, chaos and fear reign and the darkness that once clung to the shadows has been emboldened. Supernatural creatures--vampires, werewolves, ghouls, and worse take advantage of the havoc, striking out at isolated farms, villages and even military units. Whether they are pursuing some master plan or simply reveling in their newfound freedom is unknown. Most people dismiss reports of these slaughters as the rantings of madmen or the lies of deserters, but a few know better… In Britain, a secret award--the Silver Bayonet--is presented to those soldiers brave or fortunate enough to have faced these creatures and survived. Often, these survivors are swiftly seconded to a specialist unit and ordered to report to one of Wellington's exploring officers. Formed to root out and destroy the supernatural menace, these small units are tasked with investigating strange reports, scouring battlefields, and seeking out allies and artifacts that could stem the tide. Britain is not alone in this fight--the other great nations have their own units dedicated to the fight against the supernatural--but that is not to say that mankind is united in the face of the rising darkness. While the rising darkness is a common foe, and rival units may forge uneasy and fleeting alliances, patriotism and national interest will just as often pit them against each other in races for ancient knowledge or forgotten treasure. The Silver Bayonet is a skirmish wargame of gothic horror set during the Napoleonic Wars. Each player forms an elite band of monster hunters drawn from the ranks of one of the great powers. Riflemen, swordsmen, and engineers fight side-by-side with mystics, occultists, and even those few supernatural creatures that can be controlled or reasoned with enough to make common cause. The game can be played solo, co-operatively, or competitively, with players progressing through a series of interlinked adventures with their soldiers gaining experience and suffering grievous wounds and their units triumphing… or falling in the face of the shadows. It is a game of action and adventure, where musket and sabre meet tooth and claw. Read more

  • Very Positive First Impression
I have a fondness for D&D’s Ravenloft setting and also enjoy Napoleonic tabletop gaming using Warlord Games’ Black Powder rules. I was excited for the release of The Silver Bayonet as a crossover into both of those realms. It’s a rather lightweight rule set which is a strength in my opinion as I’m hoping to entice some of my RPG friends to give The Silver Bayonet a try. The book contains ten competitive scenarios and four solo scenarios, along with suggestions on how to craft your own. The bestiary chapter should help spark a few ideas for custom scenarios. Each player starts by selecting a nation: Austria, Britain, France, Prussia, Russia, or Spain. Your choice of nation impacts the type of soldiers you can recruit. There is a lot of overlap in available soldier types, but some are only available by default for certain nations. There is an option to recruit outside of your nation’s list, but it costs a lot more. Each unit is led by an officer who can be customized through a combination of stat boosts, equipment selection, and attributes (i.e. special abilities). This officer has a number of recruitment points to spend on the various soldier types. The soldier list includes: Artillerist, Champion of Faith, Dhamphir, Doctor, Grenadier, Guard, Heavy Cavalryman, Highlander, Infantryman, Irregular, Junior Officer, Light Cavalryman, Marine, Native Scout, Occultist, Rifleman, Sailor, Sapper, Supernatural Investigator, Swordsman, Tactician, Veteran Hunter, Vivandierie, and Werebear. As you can see from the list, some soldiers are part of the supernatural realm themselves. Many of these professions are plucked straight out of the Napoleonic era and add a lot of period flavor to the game. Turns are split into a number of phases: initiative, primary player phase I, monster phase, secondary player phase, and primary player phase II. Rules for figure activation, movement, melee, shooting, cavalry movement, and other miscellaneous actions are clearly explained. I thought the rules were concise, but with enough detail to be interesting. I hope to recruit a unit and play my first game soon. ... show more

  • It's basically "Richard Sharpe meets World of Darkness"
I received 'The Silver Bayonet' as a Christmas gift and must say, it is an excellent example of how to design a tabletop wargame: 1.) make it simple 2.) make it engaging 3.) make it accessable Point the First: the system is simple, the sequence of play is well explained, and the game offers plenty of choice in building a character... but without requiring days of studying to min-max. Point the Second: in the first few decades of the 1800s, everyone on Earth was fighting someone else at some point. This makes a great backdrop for the return of supernatural critters of all stripes, feeding off the death and destruction. It doesn't take a lot to add localized monsters, nor to locate useful minis. This brings me to... Point the Third - you can use any manufacturer's minis, on any size bases, and a variety of scales work. The game sets up quickly and plays fast. It has solo rules that mean you don't need an opponent. You can construct your own scenarios, add your own enemies, or create a force of any nationality. All these things make The Silver Bayonet work exceptionally well. I have enjoyed the games I have played so far (using homemade counters) and look forward to many more, both against a live opponent and against the 'bot.' ... show more
