  • Inexpensive, and completely works fine!
I had my doubts with some few negative feedback on the item, but I had faith in knowing decades of previous machines I had built on Hitachi drives. Upon arrival and installation, i was pleasantly relieved that it worked great right out of the box. Unlike previous drives, I did have to use the dongle adapter to bypass the new remote power down system standards, but once I did, it registered immediately and formatted fine. Tested rigorously three times using surface tests overnight. 100% functional no bad sectors nor a single error warnings. Proceeded to copy my old drive and it was going at 180mb/s during that write process. Overall a great unit. Read head clicking is somewhat more noticeable in random read operation but that’s been normal for most modern Hitachi HGST drives. Heat properties are fine too. File copying took 3 hours, for 3.5GB of information. No warnings for heat related issues and PC fans stayed nice and stable. 10Gb is a lot of storage! $78, Hitachi drive quality, I will take it!! ... show more

  • Great for starting your homelab
Capacity: 14TB - SE
Big enough to provide ample storage, cheap enough to run redundancy. I bought 3, all under 5 years old all under 3 years run time, no bad sectors or issues after running SMART testing. Have been in use about 6 months now with 0 issues.

  • These are NOT the HGST drives that I have and love. This MUST WD with HGST sticker.
I was not that bothered by the speed since I use this only for backup and it spends 29 days a month powered off, then 1 day powered on for backups.... but... I have been moving data onto this drive and I can tell you this is NOT an enterprise drive. This is a HOME drive and the knocking noises I hear inside this drive scare me. I would be worried that ANY drive made as many knocking noises as these heads do as they are moving around. It sounds like a fan spinning inside and its getting hit by a cord or string and as it bounces around and drops back into the fan again and again it makes another knock. To me.. the knocking noises are very upsetting since I have 8 of the TRUE HGST 10TB drives that are in the same JBOD box and they are all silent doing the exact same job. Only these (2) drives make these noises. I will be boxing and returning these as soon as I find a replacement. It seems maybe the HGST drives are "almost" or "completely" gone and WD is going to capitalize on the reputation for quality to sell their cheaply made drives. Since My original 4TB HGST drives (16 of them) NEVER failed me in 6 years. i have been replaceing them with these 10TB drives, but.. there is no way I can trust a drive that sounds like something is bouncing around inside to last like my real HGST drives did. I only have 8 of the real drives and I will be looking for some remaining "old" stock of them and when I find them, I will send these back. These are not broken but they are such inferior quality to my original HGST drives, that they would drive me crazy. I heard them knocking as I walked by.. while my fan was on and making noise!!!! ... show more

  • RAID Array - GOOD Results -- Save Money!
Capacity: 10TB - SE
Anytime your buying something 'repurposed', especially computer equipment, it can be a bit scary because your relying on the intermediary to validate that they are providing a working product. I'm skeptical. I've worked a few years at a Datacenter (FAANG Company) and know the abuse that these devices get put through. I decided to purchase this product, but perform full benchmark testing, and do a complete read, read/write and distributive test. I bought two at different times to make sure I get different batches. All test passed, and both are currently in use as a RAID 1, hosting my personal, critical, family pictures. Dont be afraid, save some money, and buy this!! ... show more

  • Silent, large, fast, but has new SATA power
Capacity: 14TB - SE
I got this disk as Renewed, but, according to intact packaging and SMART attributes (never turned on and zero time on), the disk was absolutely new. Unfortunately, it uses new SATA interface that says the presence of 3.3V signal on 3rd pin now means "put the drive into sleep mode". Revelation: most power supplies do send 3.3V there. It looks like a dead disk. I shall say I blame mor... I mean, smart people from SATA committee who, in their infinite wisdom, required backward-incompatible change. It caused me a lot of time and effort to find the root cause and a solution: either get rid of pin #3 (e.g. by taping or painting it over) or use 4-wire -- 2 x ground (black) wires, 12V (yellow), and 5V (red) wire -- instead of 5-wire (same as above + brown or gray 3.3V wire). The thing is that hard disks do not need 3.3V power, believe or not, and never needed. So some 4-wire SATA adapters (very rare -- most use 5 wires) or Molex-to-SATA power adapters (always 4 wires -- there is no 3.3V wire in Molex connector). I went with Molex-to-SATA adapter route as cheap and bulletproof. And -- voila -- it solved the problem! I wish WD included 4-wire adapter with HC530 (14 TB, this model) like they do with HC550 (18 TB model). For failing to do so WD gets one star off. The disk itself is outstanding. Almost no vibration and so quiet -- even during operation -- that it is hard to tell that the disk is on. And it really fast, easily reaching 250 MB/s even when 40-50% full. Impressive. And it is doing it silently! Very impressive. 14 TB size, combined with relatively expensive and fast conventional magnetic recoding (aka CMR) -- vs much cheaper and slower SMR, and reasonable price make it one of the best disks. I can only hope the HC series will be as reliable (the disk carries, AFAIK, 5 year -- not usual 3 year -- warranty) as other Western Digital and HGST disks. If so, it is a steal. ... show more
