  • Good drives. Don't like that the smart data is cleared.
I've purchased a few of these now. The oldest I purchased 2 years ago and is still in regular use, no issues thus far. That also had substantially fewer hours than my most recent drives. Drive speeds are around what I expect. Which, my latest drives are in external USB3 HDD enclosures connected to a PCIE card on a desktop. I've attached screenshots of read/write speeds for 100MB and 1MB files. The drives come with a card referencing the 5-year warranty. Drives I've received from this listing thus far haven't been noisy or make weird noises. My only complaint is that these drives have the smart data cleared. So, at least on my machine, these specific drives (or drives I've purchased from this listing) see 0s across the board for errors, reallocated sectors, power-on hours, etc upon arrival. I don't know why this data is missing. I can see this data on other drives, and these drives accumulate and show this data as I use the drive, so for some reason it's cleared or zeroed out before arrival. I don't know if this info is available on Windows software or through other means, but using smartctl to check the smart data on Linux I can see the lifetime hour totals from when tests were run in the past. Which, that appears to correspond to the power-on hours at the time of the test run. What I don't know is if there was usage after the tests took place, so these are best estimates. My most recent drive had at least 4 years, 8 months of online hours A drive I purchased earlier this year had at least 5 years, 3 months of online hours A drive I purchased in May 2020 had at least 3 years, 3 months of online hours For the price, these drives are great. Zero complaints outside of what is written here. ... show more

  • The best mechanical hard drive money can buy.. period!!!
These HGST hard drives are enterprise grade, meaning they are filled with helium which allows the mechanics of the hard drive internals to operate smoother and more effectively. The drive I received was brand new. Tested it with CrystalDiskInfo and it showed zero hours of use and zero power ons. Couple that with a 5-year warranty from the reseller, what is there not to like. Had two Toshiba X300 hard drives that both died on me in a few days, those drives kept making a horrible tic tic tic sound which means failure when imminent. Was also getting SMART failure's in the bios warning me the Toshiba hard drive was about to die. This HGST has none of that, its operation is incredible, very fast, quiet and cool to the touch. I am never ever buying another brand of mechanical hard drive going forward. Thanks Amazon for having this great product available for purchase. ... show more

  • Still the drive I trust the most with long term data storage
Over the years I have bought 100's of this model for many client's computers. I've only had one DOA and one failure. DOA was shipped immediately and was able to get them up and running without much of a delay at all. The failure happened after 7 years so it was no longer under warranty. However to be fair, their system was a total mess. These clients lived on a farm, were heavy smokers, had tons of cats and dogs, their case didn't have proper air flow, and it was stuck in a cabinet with tons of stuff blocking both sides and the top. I'm honestly more surprised the drive didn't die sooner. I would have in that environment for sure. The caps on the motherboard were busted and leaking. I'm surprised the system was even running. ... show more

  • Cost effective, good quality
Professional hard drives made to last long enough re-sell them used. Most will work well and quietly for a long time but keep in mind it's not new! But neither is the price.
