Description

In this swoon-filled lesbian romcom, two dating show contestants vying for the affection of the leading man fall head over heels—for each other. Fans of Ashley Herring Blake and Alexandria Bellefleur, and readers who love The Bachelor, will adore this steamy, laugh-out-loud debut romance. Krystin knows exactly what she wants: a husband, a horse, and a place to hang all her competitive rodeo blue ribbons. But when none of the eligible bachelors in Montana end up being right for her, she turns to reality TV. On Hopelessly Devoted, Krystin will compete against dozens of other women for the heart of this season’s Hopeless Romantic, Josh Rosen. She’s determined to win the perfect life she came here for—if she can just ignore the glossy brunette whose crimson smile gives her goosebumps. Lauren has never done anything for the right reasons—and she’s definitely not on Hopelessly Devoted to win Josh’s heart. Lauren’s plan is simple: stay on the show long enough to build her social media following, and then gracefully leave when it's her turn to be eliminated. With enough followers, she’ll finally have the clout to do whatever she wants—including come out of the proverbial walk-in closet. But the longer she stays on the show, the more she finds herself tangled up in a certain blonde’s lasso. Neither contestant expects a heteronormative dating show to challenge their own deeply-ingrained ideas of who they are—and what they want. Fans of The Charm Offensive and Love Island will swoon for this sparkling debut romcom. Read more

  • Great story!
I really loved the story! It was cute and had fun twists. I was on the edge of my seat the last few chapters, waiting to see how it all panned out. I fely it had a good balance of angst, cuteness, humor, and sexiness. Overall, a great book!

  • A sweet and steamy sapphic romance
While this book did start a bit slow with way too many characters to keep track of, the book picked up immensely once the contestants started to get whittled down. As the remaining characters were developed and the main romance took center stage, it became everything I want in a romance. I liked that it wasn't a rivals or enemies to lovers, but simply two different people who had great chemistry together. The romance has some very sweet moments to it. Even with limited page time, I loved Lauren's sister Rachel and her best friend Damien. Josh, the bachelor in all this, was also handled very well. I'm so glad he didn't end up the villain or a jerk. All in all, I'm left feeling happy and fuzzy after reading this, which is always the feeling I'm looking for from a good romance novel. ... show more

  • Reality TV
Here for the Wrong Reasons by Annabel Paulsen; Lydia Wang is hailed as "a swoon-filled lesbian romcom, two dating show contestants vying for the affection of the leading man fall head over heels—for each other.." The main characters are Kristin, who wants love, marriage, and a stable home. In order to find it, she turns to Hopelessly Devoted,, a reality tv show, where she will compete against dozens of women vying for the attention of Josh, this years' bachelor.. Her greatest competition is Lauren, who isn't looking to win Josh's love and affection. In fact, she much more likely to fall for one of the other contestants. Lauren's real interest is growing her social media clout. Despite her best intentions, she finds her attentions captured by Lauren. Although we end up with a lesbian couple in the end, the book itself has very little of a building relationship between the two women. Because the show takes place within the real of a dating show, a lot of the book revolves around this. Therefore there is less about Kristin and Lauren than there should be in order to effectively develop the relationship between the two women. We don't' see a lot of inner work, especially on the part of Kristin who came in believing and wanting a hetero relationship and finds herself falling for another woman. The book is technically well written and very well representative of how the reality tv show works, it fails to reach the point of a queer story. ... show more

  • So fun
Steamy, funny, delightful rom-com. Had a hard time putting it down. So delicious and in the vein of Meryl Wilsner, Harper Bliss and Casey McQuiston.

  • Super Cute Read
Finished up with Here For the Wrong Reasons by Annabel Paulsen and Lydia Wang. I truly enjoyed this story. I felt both Lauren and Kristen had aspects that made them both super relatable. Kristen is a small town Rodeo Queen who joins the dating show Truly Devoted to find her perfect match, and she thinks Josh might just be that man. Lauren is an influencer who is joining the cast of Truly Devoted to get more followers. They both start getting closer each week of the filming, and their relationship blossoms into something more than friendship. The story was very well written. I enjoyed the mixture of characters that were cast mates on the dating show. It felt like it was a real dating show, and I was invested in finding out how it was going to end. I gave this story a 4 and recommend it to those interested. ... show more

  • What if 2 contestants on The Bachelor fall in love….with each other?
Krystin is a 23 year old rodeo queen from Montana - a devoted fan of the dating show and looking to recreate the loving relationship her parents have. She is truly hoping to find love on this show and while she likes Josh, he doesn’t make her heart pound the way Lauren does, which is…confusing. Lauren is an extremely closed off influencer who is deep in the closet out of fear and wants to make it close to the end (not to the end, mind you) to bolster her influencer status. She doesn’t count on falling for another contestant. This is definitely a slow burn - in fact it feels entirely hereto until we’re 40% into the book and then, bam, Lauren and Kristyn figure some things out. Honestly, the attraction between the MCs was not particularly clear - attraction is sometimes just there, but it was definitely a tell, not show kind of relationship. Although, to be fair, making 2 pretty contained characters fall in love in an environment where they are supposed to be straight and vying for the same man is not a simple task. Ultimately I believed that they were truly falling, even as they were unable to get out of their own ways and have a real conversation about what was going on between them. I have read a few queer books that take place in a reality TV dating game format, and this was not as successful as some of the others. I should admit that I am not a devotee of The Bachelor and other shows like it - the idea that one will find love in that environment doesn’t make any sense to me and they are SO heteronormative. In some ways, this book went out of its way to validate my pre-existing opinions - the women were mostly just scheming conniving women who were ridiculously vapid and just there to make themselves better influencers. Maybe that was meant to bring people like me along. But there were just so many contestants and I didn’t really care about most of them, and the descriptions of the dates and show format were unnecessarily detailed. I specifically reviewed the audio version and I gotta say, the narrators don’t sound very different. They were both good, but I didn’t notice a real difference when they switched between chapters or in the dialog, which on one hand was good because it was never jarring, but on the other, made me wonder why they bothered to use 2 narrators. Thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. ... show more
