First, this is a review for the larger size (2 cup). I bought this to make stone-ground mustard to go with homemade sausage and to give away at barbecues (where people eat the homemade sausage...), et cetera. It more than did the job for 8oz (1 cup) of finished mustard. It's heavy and solid. The base is lighter but doesn't skid nor am I concerned about it breaking/shattering under use. The sides are rough-milled granite. The pestle is all rough-milled, a truncated taper with a bell working face. The pestle has a silicone tube you can optionally use to improve grip - I use it. The mortar bowl needs to be smoothed and seasoned before use - the instructions are clear (rinse, grind white rice around the work surface, rinse, grind more white rice until it stops picking up granite flecks, rinse, grind garlic, peppercorns, cumin, salt to season, rinse). Grinding 6 tsp of brown mustard seed was relatively easy - adding water, honey, vinegar, salt and a tiny amount of turmeric for color resulted in stone-ground mustard condiment with about 80% of the seeds at least halved, and 50% of that 'muddled' into mush after about 8 minutes' grinding with the pestle. I press down, trap seeds/object, then twist and grind to smear the seeds/object between the pestle and the mortar bowl. This will take some work if you're grinding hard seeds or black peppercorns. I'd think guacamole (and chocolate mole, too) would be pretty quick. Soft seeds like caraway and cumin are quick, too. I like it, recommend it, and I'll gift a pair to my daughters next Holiday. ... show more

Took a cooking class in Bangkok, Thailand. Bought this Mortar and Pestle for preparing chili paste and curry sauces. Solid unit for pounding and a wood base to protect your countertop. Don’t forget to clean and season it. The instructions are clear and easy. Love it 😊

This is heavy duty and a good size. The wooden base means you won't damage your counters. It looks nice on the counter. I would let the base sit on the top with a hole to hold on the pestle, and maybe a few rubber dots on the bottom so you don't scratch when you pull it off a shelf.
