  • Great for filtering noise in a loud room
Although I'm slightly hard of hearing, I've never worn a hearing aid, but I ordered the Digging Sound hearing aids to see what they were like and if they'd help me in situations where I'd need them, like for conversation in a place with loud ambient sound. It is my opinion that, after testing them on a noisy minibus, they definitely did help. These arrived in a magnetic charging case with accessories: extra silicone sleeves of different sizes, a cleaning brush, and a USB charging cable. The materials and construction seem durable, and the fit is comfortable. Also, the two pods function independently from each other, meaning that you can set each to different levels based on your hearing in each. And because of the bluetooth connectability, they work well for watching videos or hearing music (though the sound quality is rather trebly/tinny, so not as good as your typical headset). The user has manual control over how they are set. There are six audio levels total, with the default being level 2 in both pods. Pressing the reset button on the case resets to the default level. Touch each earpod for 1 second to hear the current level; touch for one second a couple of times to advance to a louder level. I'm not sure if these are strictly volume, or if they involve some kind of curve between noise reduction, volume, and the mic's range. My impression was not only that level six was the loudest, but it seemed to pic up the most ambient sound and the furthest distance for clear voices. Level six wasn't painful for me, but levels 2-3 are probably the most comfortable to me. As I said, I tested them from the back row of a 15 foot minibus that I regularly take for shopping with a half-dozen passengers, plus the driver. The ride is 50 miles along the highway, so there's a lot of ambient humming and blowing air noise. I wanted to find out how well I could hear conversations from different distances in the bus based on the levels. Level 1 is definitely the quietest in terms of noise cancellation, but noises within a foot or two are clearly amplified, like my tapping on a desk, but not much is clear beyond that. Level 6 was the loudest, but not painfully so (except when I popped open a can of soda). The ambient noise seemed less filtered out, but was not competing with the voices of the front row passenger conversing with the bus driver, while both of their faces were turned forward. That was the acid test in my opinion. As another reviewer stated, I don't think these would compare to medical grade hearing aids that cost in the thousands of dollars, nor do they compare with a decent headset for audio balance and fidelity, but they definitely would work for enjoying a conversation in a noisy environment, and for watching TV or using the bluetooth to your phone. For the price, they would be a very good alternative if you're struggling with mild-to-moderate hearing loss, as I am. ... show more

  • More a general listening device than a hearing aid
The product I received is the Digging Sound Digital Hearing Aids, Model # T002. I ordered it because I use hearing aids and I occasionally try various other hearing products. This product is very similar to the Ear Fun Air 2 Wireless Ear Buds, with the biggest difference being that one is marketed as "Hearing Aid" and the other is marketed as "Ear Buds." After trying it for a few days I believe it is more the latter than the former. What I liked: The included selection of three sizes of ear buds allowed me to find a close but not uncomfortable fit that holds solidly during active movement. There are six volume levels with a level 2 default level. They individually toggle among the levels with a single touch, which is helpful because my hearing is worse in one ear than in the other. When they are returned to the charging case they conveniently auto-off. The charging case is solidly built, compact and convenient to use. They easily paired with my phone and stayed connected while I walked around my house. Answering requires a single touch. What I liked less: The box states "Digital 16 Channel" but no reference is made to this in the operation manual. The sound is clear but there is no frequency variation control, so it is simply louder or softer. The touch control is quite sensitive but I expect I will adjust to that the more I use them. The literature does not mention an app. I searched Digging Sound for an app and found a couple but neither were specific to this set. In summary, they are good quality sound amplifiers that fit comfortably and most useful in direct sound applications such as watching television and when talking on the telephone. At the current price it is well below the cost of brand name ear buds. ... show more

  • Hearing amplifiers that have both positives and negatives
To begin with the positives: These devices cost a lot less than professional hearing aids and they are convenient both to recharge and to carry (in their recharging case). I get tired of replacing the batteries in my professional hearing aids (about every 3-4 days, on average) and having to come up with custom cases to carry them around when I'm not actually using them (which is a fair amount of time). I've been really curious at how today's over-the-counter hearing aids might compare, and I was attracted to the AirPods-like recharging case that these hearing aids come with. At the very least, I figured these would give me an inexpensive pair of hearing aids to use as backups should I misplace my professional ones. These will suffice as backups, but they have some real negatives. First, these are really hearing amplifiers, not hearing aids. In other words, they do not amplify the particular frequencies that I have trouble hearing, but instead amplify all sound. The result is that human speech is no more intelligible, though it is louder, which helps some. Second, the volume control on these is reset simply by touching the outside of either aid (the volumes can be reset independently). I frequently up the volume by accident simply while trying to reposition the bud in my ear to ensure that it won't fall out. And then getting the volume back down takes a series of presses that take some time and can be annoying when one is getting feedback in the middle of a conversation. Third, the tone isn't great. When I'm speaking, my own voice sounds odd, like it is an echo chamber. And outside sounds are a little harsher than with my professional hearing aids. Finally, these hearing aids are much larger and more prominent than my processional ones, which sit behind the ear, or even my AirPods, which are fairly similar in design. So they aren't exactly discreet. I'm going to keep these for emergencies (As when the batteries on my others run down unexpectedly). But I'm also going to look around to see if there aren't more sophisticated over-the-counter hearing aids that allow adjustments to be made in the amplification of different frequencies. I'm hoping to find some similarly-rechargeable ones at about this same price point. ... show more
