  • Mixed Feelings on the Performance of this Recorder
I'll start with the positive. When you have a good OTA channel signal, the recorded quality of the program is great. The recording is pretty easy, you just select a program on the EPG and you can record it using once, daily, or weekly options. The owners manual provides enough basic information to get you up and running. When you record a program, it saves the file as the channel name plus a date-time stamp code, which you can later rename if desired. Now the negatives. 1) For some reason, I cannot schedule record on one of my OTA channels (28-1). I can manually record that channel, but for some reason, the EPG recording function defaults to a different channel (26-3). 2) I have attempted to call GPX support, but gave up after holding on line with no indication of how long it would take in the queue. I also sent an email support request on this issue, but so far I have received no response. 3) My recorder shut down overnight and failed to record my scheduled programs. Did it overheat? No idea, it was just shut down this morning when I checked it. 4) The remote control/tuner interface is not very good. I often have to press a button twice or even three times before a command is sent/received and acted upon. For some reason, sometimes the Channel+ button does not seem to work, so I have to use the Channel - button to loop back through the channels. 5) A Couple of times my GPX recorder has stopped sending out an HDMI signal to my TV. I had to unplug my recorder and reattach my HDMI cord to solve that issue. Again, was this a heat build up issue? 6) For some reason, my scheduled list of programs to record seems to clear itself out. Since I have a number of daily recordings set, this means I have to go back into the schedule and set up recording on each program again. In the 3 days I have this recorder, I have had to reprogram with recoding list at least 5 times. However, I have been trying various antennas for better performance and maybe when I switch antennas and rescan for channels, this may affect the saved recording list. I don't know. 7) You can only watch/record one channel at a time. For the price of this unit, that may be acceptable, but it does limit the use of this device. 8) The recorded programs are saved in .mts format, and use the channel name and date-time code. Any program content description, such as title and short synopsis of the program, is lost. If you want to save a recorded program, you will have to rename it so you have some idea of what was in that file. 9) The owner's manual provides basic info to get you up and running, but there are many more features and oddities about this unit that should/could be added to the manual. For example, you don't select "record" to add a program to the list, you select "book" instead. OK, something lost in translation. A few other useful features that actually work on this device are never mentioned in the manual. You learn by doing on this device, and you may or may not remember how you came upon any one feature that you found useful. I found myself discovering a feature on this device, but had no idea how to get back to that option again. If GPX improves the actual hardware on this unit, I hope they also spend more time on writing a better manual. It might not be fair to compare this inexpensive GPX tuner/recorder to the much more expensive DVR I rented for years with my Internet/TV provider, but the quality and performance of this GPX unit does not come close to my previous DVR box. The DVR box I rented was rock solid and never had any of these issues I am experiencing with my GPX recorder. From what I see on the internet, all these ~$30 china TV tuner\recorder boxes are running on the same components, so I doubt just buying a different branded box would make any difference. It appears that the EPG and recording interface is the same on all these type of TV tuners/receivers. If my recorder worked all the time, even with its limitations, I think I would be OK with the unit. But honestly, if it continues to shut down overnight and if it continues to clear out the scheduled programming, then it is just not worth it to me even though this is a very inexpensive box. I have had my GPX recorder for less than a week, but intend to return it for refund if I cannot get these issues solved. I would prefer to pay more money for a box that actually works all the time. But if GPX support responds to my email and I get these issues resolved, I'll update this review. If I just got a bad unit, I'll update this review. I really wanted this unit to work for me, but it has been mostly a disappointment. 2/5 stars is generous rating at this time. UPDATE: 23 Dec 2021. I contacted GPX about the issues I was having with this recorder. The service rep took down all my info and said they would get back to me in a day or two. 20 days later, still no response and I cannot fix the problem with this DVR's EPG by myself. The company does not even give you a trouble call or case number to follow the progress of you concern. If this unit works for you out of the box, then it may be worth it for you. IT is not a big investment. I had problems with my GPX DVR out of the box and there has been NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT to resolve these issues. I ended up returning my DVR, downgrading this product to 1 star, and would not recommend it unless you have absolutely no problems with it out of the box. If you have any issues with this unit, it will never get fixed. ... show more

  • Nice Tuner/Recorder
So far, I really like the GPX Digital TV Tuner and Recorder (TVTR149B) tuner. I bought mine at Menards on a whim, I didn't know these where available on Amazon for the same price. First, I used a SanDisk Ultra 128GB USB 3.0 USB flash drive with no problems. The tuner does a great job of scanning for channels. The video quality is also very good. The unit supports a lot of different video formats which is a great feature. As a previous reviewer noted, the resume playback didn't start where you leave off, but they said they figured out a solution that wasn't in the manual. When I find the solution, I will give the unit 5-stars. Additional bonus: Power supply is built-in so, no extra bulky wall-mount power supply required !!! ... show more

  • Replaces my old dvd recorder
We bought this at Menards on sale and paid $24.99 for the first one. We have just two tv antennas going in opposite directions (so we do not have to rotate to get all channels available at once) which has worked wonderfully for us for years. We live in quite a remote area and cable is not available and cannot justify price of dish so this is the ultimate solution. I had a panasonic dvd recorder for several years but it has not been working correctly for about a year and had to replace. They no longer make and they wanted $600 bucks for a new one and 3-4 hundred for used ones. Totally ridiculous. When I saw this on sale I told my husband it was worth a try. Anyways reviews are right about a couple things. The instruction manual is almost worthless. I had to call company immediately to clarify some information but they were helpful and answered any questions I had. The system must remain on to record but my tv can be off so no big deal for me. They should have included that info in the instruction manual as that is pertinent info. Most other information is on the tv screen but it would be nice to be able to reference the book as an option. We have had it for about 3 or 4 months now so I have down which buttons to push and have found some extra features I like as the resume thing where if we stop we can start up where we left off. But once again was not addressed in the manual. But I have to say the only real complaint I would have is the remote. The remote is far too small and hard to push the buttons. We are not patient about watching the seven commercials between the five minutes of program but fast forwarding is kind of a pain with the small buttons on the remote. I miss my commercial skip button on the dvd recorder but that is the only thing I miss actually. And the remote does seem to have to point directly but not the first remote to be like that in my life so oh well. But for us I will say this was an excellent purchase and for most part we are extremely satisfied. I actually went and bought a spare for $29.99 when they had their 11% sale to have a backup when this eventually dies some year so as not to have to learn a new system and the price is right for sure. ... show more

  • This recorder only uses outdated flash drives. Not fat32 or ntfs compatible.
Don't plan on recording on this device unless you have 32 mgb zip drives from 1980. Instructions came with a phone number, and when I reached someone they had no advice on where to get a usb drive that was even compatible. Waste of my time and money!!!
