Description

The original LA-3A Audio Leveler made its debut in 1969 and was an instant hit. Studio engineers loved the half-rackspace solid-state electro-optical compressor for the punchy dynamic control it delivered on electric bass, guitars, and just about any other source. GearNuts knows you want one, and we have good news: the Golden Age Comp-3A re-creates the circuitry, sonics, behavior, and form factor of the classic - and it's delightfully affordable. The vintage-style circuit uses no ICs. The I/O is transformer balanced. And the sound? Warm and deliciously musical. Treat yourself to classic compression, with the Golden Age Comp-3A. Golden Age Comp-3A Compressor Features: Vintage-style circuitry with no integrated circuits Transformer- balanced I/O Capable of driving most balanced or unbalanced loads Internal jumper for selectable output-transformer loading Lets you vary high-frequency response Employs classic T4-style electro-optical attenuator for gain control Program-dependent attack and release times Easy 2-control operation: Gain, Peak Reduction HF

  • Excellent compressor.
This is a great unit. It is not fully transparent (which it shouldn't be), but more-so than it's sibling the COMP-2A. Built well. It sounds great and adds a pleasant touch to the signal. 5 stars!

  • One of the best compressors made today
Take the transparent response of the LA-2A and get rid of the mud. Now everything's clear. And huge. The reason people gave this box one star is to try and lower the second hand price. It isn't working, and people are generally holding onto these. This is the problem with pricing things affordably, you get clueless reviews from newbs. The only minus I can think of is the opamp isn't socketed. But the one used is fine. The transformers are totally fine as is the T4, which is socketed. I got the Kenetek for the Klark 2A but it isn't needed here, nor are any other mods other than flipping up the two front panel switches around GAIN for the Clearmountain mod. I wonder if UA stopped building the original because these were so good. The UA original definitely sounds different and will growl more, in a good way. But this is beautifully transparent, the essence of opto compression, and vastly better than the ART vactrols. I bought 2 and wouldn't say no to a third. Golden Age has continued to surprise me; they are better at these knockoffs than Warm. ... show more
