Description

The Mandocello is by far the least expensive instrument of its type available from ANY manufacturer, but boasts deluxe features not offered anywhere else. These include the patented Zero Glide nut and a Venetian-style cutaway body. The Mandocello also features a dual pickup system, which includes a jazz-style floating humbucker pickup, and a transducer pickup in the bridge (with a volume control knob and a knob for blending the two pickups), providing a superb plugged-in tone. The Mandocello has a maple back and sides and solid spruce top and is fitted with an adjustable ebony bridge, a pakkawood tailpiece and a two-way adjustable truss rod. All of this, AND a hard-shell case is included in the price! The Mandocello continues the expansion of Gold Tone's innovative "Folkternative" initiative, aimed squarely at providing amateur and professional players with the widest selection of plucked instruments in the world at affordable prices.

  • For my 60th birthday
My wife and I play a lot of music. We have a band, we have put out 7 CDs, and play a lot of live shows. I played one of these in a store in Indianapolis in early 2018. Loved the sound and the feel of it. So my wife conspired with a dozen or so friends of mine, and they put together the money to get this for my birthday. There was a party, there was silliness, and then this was handed to me. I tune it to the Irish intervals, like an Irish Bouzouki, but a 5th down. CGDG, low to high. I think it is glorious. I love the two pickup system. I find that the selector turned slightly into the magnetic pickup setting sounds best. Gives me top end, but not the brittleness of the piezo pickup. The neck needed a bit of a setup, but that is not unusual for an instrument that has been shipped. All in all this is a great instrument. A year and a half later, I am still wrapping my brain around it, I'm a hardcore rhythm player, and having to break that down to individual notes is tricky. This does not take well to chords, so I use a lot of one and two note fingerings, and a lot of drones. Well worth adding to your collection. ... show more

  • nice, set up nicely. Clean and in top condition upon arrival. Sounds and plays well.
volume and tone knobs are very very low tier. Opportunity for replacement with something of my own choosing. Nice clean instrument and plays well out of box. I think the seller may have performed set up. Very happy.

  • Strings will break monthly
This mandocello is a complete waste of money. The strings break monthly because of the nut. It wears the strings down and they break. Gold Tone sent us a new nut and it still does this every time. It’s such a disappointment.

  • I love this instrument
I love the sound of this it is a beautiful instrument. I would’ve given it five stars except the A string keeps breaking. Just tuning it I have broken 3 strings. I finally had to go to a cello string that fortunately I like the sound but it’s definitely muted.
