I typically prefer a super directional light for portraits. But dance floor presents a problem: you’re really not in control of where your subjects will be facing or the heights of the people you’re shooting. So a super directional softbox is not really ideal. At the same time, bouncing off a wall is simple and somewhat omnidirectional.. but also leaves a blown out wall you have to avoid. (Not to mention walls are not always conveniently exactly where you need them to be) Add to the mix tight spaces and weird dancefloor layouts, and it can be tough. This tool is a GREAT fit for me. It provides directional lighting while also being flexible, filling in from many angles so that I can move around the dancefloor and think more about composition and emotion. It also prevents light from spilling back behind it into the room that I want to leave dark. The diffusion is perfect and the size gives a great softness while not being to unwieldy in a tight space. Setup couldn’t be simpler- but I will say that when packing it up, I have to be careful to make sure that the cloth outer “shell” doesn’t get misplaced. (I wonder if a bit of glue to keep the nose of it permanently attached to the metal frame might be best for me) Overall, a new favorite tool in my lighting toolbox! ... show more

Other reviewers have said it can be tricky to build this thing, and it does require a bit of care. But once you do, it's amazing! The light it produces is really gorgeous, and it's light enough that it doesn't weigh-down my light and my stand. I do wish it was about $25 less than it is, but it comes in a nice nylon case, which helps soften the sting a little. Still, my main concern was ease of setup - I don't want to be sitting there dinking with putting together a softbox while my client watches, and this is so fast and easy, I'll never have to worry about that. I have several lights from Godox so I didn’t hesitate to try this lantern soft box. It has been a great space saver and it gives really nice even soft light. I’ve used it with both a 60 watt and 200 watt light and it just looks great. It was super easy to put together. I know the umbrellas and traditional soft boxes are popular, but this lantern is a game changer especially if you don’t want such a massive soft box taking up space. I didn’t expect this to come with so much stuff. The item I clicked on, the images only showed the lantern soft box (and you had a 25” or 36” option). However in my “orders” it shows exactly what I actually got: 25” lantern, skirt for lantern, and a Bowen’s mount barn doors with grid and color gel filters (a typical accessory that comes with some Godox video lights, and I already had one of the barn door kits from purchasing one). But when I saw that, it was WELL WORTH the price. Setup: it’s super easy to setup. But the first few times you have to help it: you put it into the diffusion and push it against the floor, there’s a center rod that just slides under a hook and it is locked into place, to break down you just push down and slide the rod back out and it all straightens out almost like an umbrella. But the rods on the outside (that dome out to shape the diffusion) will bend in the first few times so you need to apply some pressure with one hand and just move them where they need to go, but it’s not hard. Try leaving it setup for a few days and it will help “train” it. As far as portability, this comes with a bag, and the whole thing (just barely) fits into my lighting duffle bag. But I have the 25”… which when collapsed is more like 3 or 3.5 feet long… the larger lantern might be more challenging to travel with. As far as how well it works: mine got delivered 40mins before I left the house to go do a photo shoot. And though I primarily wanted this for video, it performed great with a strobe. The light is incredibly soft and little to no hot spots. I used it as a fill and it not only provided great separation, it blended perfectly with my key light and the transition from highlights to shadows was pristine. If you’re looking for a very clean and commercial look, this is definitely a handy tool. Not "easy" to set up without touching the white fabric a lot and potentially soiling it. Spokes don't go into position easily and you have to reach in and adjust them. Also, given its length when folded, it's definitely not portable. At the same time it's too chinzy to be considered a studio investment. ... show more
