  • Nice Form Factor But...
... there are some issues with these that make them difficult to use, at least for me. I wear hearing aids and I had heard about these types of sound amplifiers for a while, so when I had the opportunity to try these I jumped at the chance. I thought they would be good in a pinch if one of my hearing aids malfunctioned. The first thing I want to point out, to set expectations appropriately, is that these are sound amplifiers, not hearing aids. Hearing aids have circuitry to vary the amplification according to the degree a patient can hear specific frequencies. This leads to fairly natural sound. In my case, my hearing aids amplify the speech range well so I can hear and understand voices pretty clearly. In addition, full hearing aids have sophisticated noise suppression and focusing capability that allows one to hear sounds, say, ahead of you while suppressing others. This capability works well in a busy restaurant or bar. In addition, some hearing aids act as Bluetooth headphones to pump sound from a phone or other source directly into the aid. This amplifier set is not that. So what does this rechargeable sound amplification device do? Well, it seems to amplify all frequencies at the same time. So everything gets louder at the same time. There are multiple volume levels controlled with a circular analog control on each amplifier and the levels get fairly loud. For example, without my hearing aids, I can't hear the tapping on keys on my keyboard. With these in, however, the tapping comes through loud and clear, as do voices. There are a total of 3 sizes of domes so you can get a pretty good fit. I find the earpiece exceptionally small and so this enables discrete wear. This amplifier set comes with a charging case that fully charges the aids in about 2-3 hours and the aids can operate for more than a full day. They turn on and off automatically by removing from the case and returning them to it. The charging case indicates the level of charge. Good instructions are included to get you started quickly. Now, at the top I mentioned there are some issues. First of all, the volume is definitely a pain to adjust. You have to remove them from your ears and turn the analog control using a small supplied screwdriver. So to get the volume you need it takes trial and error - take an aid from your ear, turn the control a bit, and then replace it and see how the volume is for you. Repeat as needed. Each aid needs to be adjusted separately. The problem I have with this is that different situations call for different volume levels, so the adjustment becomes very unwieldy on the fly. The other issue I had with these is that while I couldn't hear any feedback from these, as soon as I walked into a room my wife was in she immediately said a high-pitched whine was coming from them. I couldn't adjust them to completely eliminate this with different ear tips and volume adjustments. While the sound level is adequate for me, they are unusable if I'm in the same room as my wife due to the whining. So, are these for you? Well, if a sound amplifier that increases all frequencies would work for you, they may be. But considering the issues I mentioned, I personally find the price excessive for what you get. The form factor is small enough to make them highly discrete and volume levels have a good range, but volume adjustment is difficult. The whining may or may not be an issue for you at the volume that is adequate for you, but my best advice is to be sure to test them before the return window closes. ... show more

  • Not bad for the price.
I don't have a lot of experience with hearing aids. These are priced at about $199, and I only had prior experience with a $30 set of behind the ear hearing aids which I thought were absolutely awful. All of the problems that I had with that super cheap hearing aid, which I got for free, do not exist with these hearing aids. I know that you can easily spend many more hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on hearing aids, so I would imagine there are plenty of more expensive aids out there that work better than these, but these seem to be pretty decent for the price. Unfortunately, I can't really speak from experience, but I know that these definitely work very well for watching TV, or talking with people. When it is quiet, there's always just a subtle static sound, even when the volume is set very low. I don't know how normal that is, but it's not an issue unless it's completely quiet. There's definitely some getting used to these, as there would be with any hearing aids. You'd be surprised how loud some sounds can be, like simply walking, and your feet touching the floor, or, almost shockingly, flushing a toilet. The hearing aids do come with a charging case, which is very nice, and a very small screwdriver which is needed to adjust the volume. Don't lose that little screwdriver, or you'll have to go by another one. Although, once you get the volume set, you probably won't change it too often. Once you charge the case with the aids inside, you just remove the aids and pop them into your ears and they are automatically on. It's a very nice, simple system. The various sized earbuds are nice for a custom fit, as I found that my left ear requires a little smaller earbud than my right ear. They're quite comfortable, although it definitely takes some getting used to, especially for longer periods of time. I generally only use them for a few hours a day, if that many. I gave these a rating of four stars, based on my previous experience with a phenomenally bad, cheap set of hearing aids, and the fact that you can spend many many times more money on other ones. These seem like they're quite a decent value, especially for a first-time user. If I had the option of trying another set of hearing aids that were $2,000, I might think that these are horrible, but not having that option, I must say, these work pretty well. Good luck to you. I hope this has been helpful. ... show more

  • Squeals!
Due to the location of the mics on these GoLite Analog Hearing Aids, they squeal, especially when trying to insert them into the ears. Taking them out can also cause them to squeal depending on how you hold the removal wire. The left hearing aid is worse than the right one, no matter what volume you set it to. Adjusting the volume is also difficult because you can’t make the adjustment while the aid is in your ear. You have to take it out, use the included volume adjustment tool to turn the control, then put it back in your ear to see if it is at the correct level. It is also difficult to only adjust the control a little bit. Once I was able to get the volume set to a comfortable level, the sound coming through the aids was good but this version doesn’t include any programming so that you can adjust the sound to the environment you are in. The hearing aids come with three different sizes of dome pairs, so you may change domes to get the best fit. You want the fit to be tight to keep sound from coming in around the domes. That also helps hold the aids in your ears. They also come with 4 wax guards so you can replace the filter if they get too clogged with ear wax. Each hearing aid is a different color so that you can tell which one goes in which ear. Since they fit into the ear, it isn’t a big deal that they are different colors. The hearing aids come with a well written, easy to understand instruction book. The charging case is nice and can charge the aids even when not attached to a power source. They do take about 3 hours to fully charge. ... show more
