  • I have found Berkey to be an excellent filter, everything I have put through it has ...
I purchased the Crown Berkey last year, and since then 90% of what I have drank has gone through a Berkey filter. I have found Berkey to be an excellent filter, everything I have put through it has come out tasting excellent. This includes sketchy well water that may or may not have gone through a reverse osmosis filter. This summer I have done a lot more traveling, and needed a way to get filtered water on the road without carrying around gallons and gallons of pre-filtered water. Enter the Go Berkey. I considered the Travel Berkey, but wanted something a little more compact in case I had to get on an airplane. The Go Berkey comes with the upper chamber, the filter and everything needed to attach it, and the lower chamber. It also comes with a water bottle with a filter in it, and the Berkey Primer (which Berkey now includes with all Go Berkey kits as of the beginning of 2017 according to their website). Finally, in order to hold it all together it comes with a very nice padded carrying case. The filter assembly assembles just like any other Berkey filter system (first picture). The filter goes in the top chamber (second picture), and sticks through a hole into the bottom chamber. Water is poured in the top and slowly drains through the filter to the bottom chamber. The capacity is not much, but I think it is an acceptable trade off for the portability. For travel, you can flip the top chamber over and store it inside the bottom. There is no need to remove the filter (third picture). The cap also fits on the bottom of the bottom chamber, leading to a very nice, compact little package. This all goes inside the bag, which has enough capacity for the filter assembly as well as the water bottle and the primer. Three bag is quite roomy, there is no need to cram everything in (fourth picture). It also is sturdy enough to stand up on its own (fifth picture). I could have done without a pocket for the water bottle to save a little room overall, but that is just a design choice, off they didn't include it somebody would complain that there wasn't a pocket for it. I have confidence that, if packed carefully, it will be protected while traveling. The priming tool is a very nice inclusion (sixth picture). If you use Berkey filters in any way you should have one. It really works a lot better then the standard way Berkey suggests that you prime your filters. It is a two way primer, so you can both prime and purge filters (you probably want to purge them before traveling or long term storage to avoid mold buildup, although I have no idea if this nasty reduce filter lifespan). I found the easiest way to prime the filters was to install it in the top chamber like you are going to use it, but to prime it from below to start the water flow. The included water bottle is not really that great, I have seen countless ones just like it in outdoor stores. It is not my preferred type of filter, it requires you to suck water through the filter, which is a lot more work then you might think. Ultimately it is a wash for me, I don't really care that they included it, I ultimately bought the kit for the Berkey. Maybe I will eventually find a use for it, probably just as a backup backup filter in my truck for emergencies. I am quite pleased with the Go Berkey, I feel like I got my money worth (sort of, Berkeys are quite spendy, they all seem about 1/3 more expensive then they should be). If you are looking to get into Berkey, this would be a great way to try them out, and could serve as a main drinking water filter if you are patient (at least until you break down and but a bigger one). ... show more

  • am a little disappointed in this kit
am a little disappointed in this kit. First off, the water bottle is just a whole bunch of trouble to prime and rinse out the filter. Since part of my mouth is paralyzed, not sure if I can even use the straw with the filter. But one of the biggest problems I see, if you are trying to source water, how do you get it into the bottle and not ON the bottle? You have to be darn careful to not contaminate yourself with that water! The Stainless unit and filter are, as all things Berkey, extraordinary. I bought the black Berkey primer which is another story, and got the filter primed. Even new, with city tap water, it takes about 2-1/2 hours to filter that almost quart of water. So if you are desperate for a drink, you will just have to wait. I've got a household use for this, and now that I've gotten it down some, its working great. But also wanted this for when we travel so we're not buying bottle water everywhere and I'm not sure that its going to be what I want. I'm not hanging around my hotel room for the hours necessary to filter a gallon of drinking water we need for the day! I might be able to get enough done between the evening and over night to have our coffee and tea in the morning, but that would likely be all I'd get filtered. Maybe another quart before we're on our way! Still, anything is better than nothing. ... show more

  • Perfect for travel
Best solution if you travel and want to be confident in the quality of your drinking water. We have used a Berkey Light for about 8 years - for all our drinking water. This little travel model is exactly what we need on the road.

  • Mixed bag
First off, this isn’t an authorized dealer, which means that you don’t get any of the manufacturer warranties. Secondly, the device itself only puts out 16-24 oz of water (depending if you want to wait for the filter to completely empty) not 34 oz as claimed. Thirdly, though the list of things removed by this filter is impressive, it still doesn’t remove many of the things my normal refrigerator filter does. For example, Antenolol, Estrone, Linuron, Asbestos, Nonyphenol, and o-Dichlorobenzene. Fourthly, the case is nice in that you can keep all your travel Berkey stuff in one consolidated bag. If I’m packing light, I cap the exposed spout (design flaw in the GoBerkey’s collapsed state) with a camping mug that nests onto the GoBerkey. Fifthly, I dislike how the GoBerkey requires two additional cups to operate properly. Unless you have access to a large kitchen sink, you are going to need to fill up a cup with the “dirty” water, then poor it into the top, then poor the filtered water from the bottom chamber into another cup to drink from. You don’t want to drink straight from the bottom section, as it’s essentially a Petri dish, warm, wet and dark. Any bacteria introduces by your mouth could grow in the bottom container to unsafe levels. Sixthly, the price of all Berkeys are astronomical. You can get a Survivor Filter Pro water filter that cleans 99.99 of viruses, bacteria, etc for $65. It doesn’t take out as many toxins and hard metals as the Berkey but it’s still very safe water and it can fit in your pocket, not to mention filter 26k gallons before you need to replace the super inexpensive filters. Other than all that, the water tastes great (tasteless) and I love how you can bring a Berkey with you all around the world. ... show more
