  • An outstanding set of drivers for the homeowner
Style: 118PCS Magnetic Screwdriver Set
This is this most complete set of drivers and accessories that any none professional mechanic could want. Even if you have most of these items in your central toolbox having this well organized set as a backup in a great idea because you always seem to be missing something in your major toolbox. And this all for the price of a lunch. While these may not be "SnapOn" quality the quality is quite good. The handles are very comfortable and grippy, they are marked for type and size and can be easily magnetized with the supplied tool. I took one of the flat blade screwdrivers, placed just the tip in a vise, turned it really hard and there was no sign of any distortion of the blade or any movement of the shaft in the handle. Something to consider is the way these tools are held in the stand. It is a very efficient design however there are some compromises : > Even though they are clearly marked on the front of the handles for size and type once in the stand you can not see the tips and you have to spin them around and be looking down on them to see the markings. When you want to remove a screw do you know all the size definitions. Or do you usually look at the screw head and think oh, it's a torx and grab a couple out of the tool drawer that are about that size. For me it is really hard to judge what I need without actually seeing the tip of the driver. I thought it would be a good idea to put all the flat blades and Phillips together etc. but some of the holes are a specific size and will not allow that. A solution was to mark the top of each handle with a permanent marker. + for Phillips - for the flat blades and T for Torx. This can make a huge difference as you know what type you are pulling and can sometimes judge by the handle size how big the tip is. Not a perfect solution but it made a big difference at least for me. Another thing found on this particular set is that the short bits are held in separate containers on the front. They tilt forward by pulling on a tab. They were so tight I had to use a vise grips to pull them forward. I cycled them 10 times and they got a little better however finally wound up cutting off the little "tits" on each end. It requires a very sharp exacto knife but they now are easy to access. There are similar kits out there that you simply push on these and they pop out. Probably a better solution. This is overall a great kit at a great price. If you do not use your tools that much it is great knowing you have pretty much any driver you will ever need. You will not be concerned that it might take a little time to pull the right one. If you use tools more often a good solution might be to simply put this kit on the back shelf for the time that you misplaced or do not have that odd one that you need. Probably what I will do. ... show more

  • Worth Screwing Around With? [FOUR STARS]
Style: 118PCS Magnetic Screwdriver Set
As I’ve remarked in other reviews, “You get what you pay for,” and at least in principle, I continue to believe that to be true. On the other hand, underlying every product type is a certain benefit-to-cost bell curve. A ten-dollar tool is probably twice as good as the five-dollar equivalent, but a twenty-dollar version may not be better than the ten, at all. The trick to purchasing affordable tools is to find the sweet spot on the bell curve that gives you usable functionality, with maximum quality and durability, at the lowest price. The GMTOOLS Screwdriver Set, for example, comes off as a steal. For twenty-six bucks, you get 118 pieces. Starting with a generous assortments of Phillips, flat, star, and square screwdrivers, the kit also comes with a number of “micro” or “precision” screwdrivers with Phillips, flat, and Torx tips. A ratcheting 1/4-inch bit handle is included, along with 60 flat, Phillips, star, and square bits, not to mention six sizes of 1/4-inch-drive nut-driver bits. The kit contain two small sets of Allen wrenches, one metric, the other in liberty units. There are two L-shaped screwdrivers, each with a Phillips tip at one end and a flathead or slot tip on the other. All of these items are stored/presented in a black plastic stand that can roost on your bench top. As if the list wasn’t lengthy enough, two additional accessories are thrown in for good measure—a magnetic-base steel bowl (temporary storage for screws and small parts you might remove from something as you work on it) and a plastic contraption with embedded magnets, intended for use in magnetizing/demagnetizing your screwdrivers. All in all, that’s quite the inventory. But let’s now take a closer look. Some months ago, I acquired/reviewed a smaller assortment of “Sinoer”-brand screwdrivers. Granted, they aren’t -exactly- the same as the GMTools drivers, but their evident similarities suggest the two products are much more likely to be “cousins” than “competitors”. I’m happy to be corrected on this point if I’m wrong, but I’ve developed a suspicion that most China-produced goods all come from a relative handful of factories... I imagine giant manufacturing “motherships” if you will, that produce dozens of minor variations on a given product (like screwdrivers), embossing each variant with a different “brand” name. A Google search of “GMTools,” by the way, gets you a lot of hits associated with General Motors (the car company), but little budget-screwdriver-related, outside of the Amazon ecosystem. GMTools claims these tools are fabricated from “vanadium steel.” Short of the use of an X-ray spectrometer, I have no way of validating this. A touch with the corner of a bastard file, however, does not suggest material properties better than mild steel. One thing that bothers me are the black tips on all of the screwdrivers in this set. In the case of top-of-the-line drivers, the tips are sometimes heat-treated and tempered. Intended to make the tips tougher and less likely to deform or break in rough use, the treatment process leaves the tips darkened or “blued.” What I see on these screwdrivers looks less like legitimate tempering and more like paint or enamel applied so as to give the -appearance- of tempering. Why do I say that? Because whatever the black stuff is, it easily scrapes off... so this doesn’t even qualify as case hardening. What are these tools really worth? Let’s start with some math: One hundred and eighteen kit items into twenty-six bucks tells you the average value of any component in this kit is about 22 cents. Not fair? OK, then let’s stack the deck in favor of GMTools. Let’s assume all of the 1/4-inch bits, Allen wrenches, L-shaped drivers, the plastic stand, magnetic bowl, and magnetizer are all somehow “free,” and let’s consider the screwdrivers alone: Thirty-two drivers divided into twenty-six bucks would make the average value of a screwdriver in this kit, 81 cents. Consider now that in a day and age when you can’t buy a pack of chewing gum or a can of Coke for 81 cents, what grade of tool are we really talking about? That’s a fair question. You may conclude that I dislike this set. No, not at all, because I understood up front what the probable quality of this kit would be, given its “manufacturer”, its origin, and its price. There is another saying among craftsmen that says, “Use the right tool for the job.” If you are budget-constrained, if your use of tools like this is at most occasional in frequency and limited in scope, if you understand what 81 cents really buys in terms of tool materials, workmanship, and quality, then this screwdriver set may well be the “right” tool for you. No, I would not rely upon these for daily use by professionals. On the other hand, for an apartment dweller, a person needing to acquire some spare tools to leave in their motor home or weekend cottage, or for a young adult learning to use hand tools (but who has not yet developed the personal discipline to properly care for expensive tools) this set may well prove itself, good enough. ... show more

  • Decent set
Style: 118PCS Magnetic Screwdriver Set
I wouldn't use this as a mechanics set, it's more suited for a desktop hobby set for tinkering with smaller projects that don't have a lot of torque. The kit is well laid out and holds everything in place.

  • Comprehensive set for homeowners
Style: 118PCS Magnetic Screwdriver Set
I wouldn't say this is a professional quality set but it has enough screwdriver coverage for most homeowners. I like that the tips are magnetic and it comes with a separate magnetizer/demagnetizer. The stand is very useful but they did not provide any mechanism to group like screwdrivers. Handles are all the same color and there are no markings on the case to differentiate between the drivers. Each handle has the type and size printed on it but that looks like it won't last (it already has started to fade on a couple). That aside, the blades appear to be well machined; time will tell how long they keep those crisp edges. ... show more

  • Great set
Style: 118PCS Magnetic Screwdriver Set
The price is attractive for the amount of tools this gives you. This is not high end quality tools, so keep that in mind. It does have everything needed that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to find at this price point. As anyone else on a budget, it’s a nice option. The quality is great however and nothing immediately broke being used. The case allows the option to hang this as well which is fantastic to keep it all in the same spot. A great starter kit for anyone!! ... show more

  • Everything you need
Style: 118PCS Magnetic Screwdriver Set
This is a good set to have around the house. Any screwdriver you need for odd jobs around the house is in this set. It may not be the highest quality but it's not meant to be. This is not a professional set but it's good enough to get most things done. The rack keeps everything organized and does not take up much space. I like having extras of all the common bits for my drill/driver. Keep this in the garage/shop and you can't go wrong. Great value for the price. ... show more
