  • First time Lithium battery user
Style: 12V 6Ah
I’ve been keeping a small sealed lead acid battery on my travel trailer table, connected to a hub I made. The hub shows voltage and has various connections for charging phones, tablets etc. It's charged via solar panels and comes in handy versus wearing down the house battery. But as time goes on I’ve noticed its capability to hold a charge decreasing. So now that it's time to replace it, I thought why not try a Lithium battery. Lithium batteries have advantages over Lead Acid Batteries and very few disadvantages. But first a little Q&A Q: Can I use a battery charger or converter designed for Lead Acid batteries to charge a Lithium battery? A: Yes you can, but! Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. I only have a rudimentary understanding of electrical theory as it relates to a battery so I’ll keep my answer very short. A conventional battery charger/converter will not fully charge a Lithium battery to 100%. And because of the algorithms built into a battery charger for Lead Acid batteries there's a chance you could damage a Lithium battery. Q: Are Lithium Ion and Lithium Phosphate batteries the same thing? A: They are both Lithium batteries, but the technology that goes into their construction differs. Lithium Phosphate batteries are in general safer to use. Q: How quickly will a Lithium battery discharge versus a Lead Acid battery? A: The discharge rate for a Lithium battery (no load) is much slower than a Lead Acid battery. If you're a seasonal camper, you might be able to fully charge the battery at the end of the season and let it sit uncharged for months. While a Lead Acid battery is going to need more frequent charging. Q: Cost versus life span, which is better? A: So this is where we get into some fuzzy math, and it will ultimately be up to you and your particular circumstances to decide if Lithium batteries are right for you. For example, Lithium batteries cost more, but that might be offset with the fact that you can use nearly 100% of the battery, versus 50% for a Lead Acid battery. Battery review. So this battery is much smaller than I expected, and its weight is a fraction of its Lead Acid cousin. But that’s not uncommon when you're used to Lead Acid batteries. It has the usual information printed on the outside of the battery case. And as you can see its blade terminals are marked red (+)and black (-) There is a built in BMS (battery management system) yet one should still use a charger rated for Lithium batteries versus relying on the BMS to protect the battery as stated in the instructions. What I like most about this battery is it’s small size, light weight and it’s capable of being discharged below the normal 50% range of its Lead Acid cousin. In some ways it’s like having two Lead Acid batteries in one. ... show more

  • Battery with BMS. Testing matches specifications.
Style: 12V 6Ah
I have the 12.8V 6Ah model. It weighs 750g (1.65 lbs, the amazon description says 1.48 and 1.54, but it's heavier than either). I measured 90x71x104mm (with terminals). The unit feels solid, but has more weight concentrated in the base. Packaging was a cardboard box, closed cell foam sheets on all sides, and a plastic bag around the battery. The battery terminals did not come with protective covers. The battery as received measured 13.3 volts. The included spec sheet is a handy reference for the battery and BMS capability. I found it all to be pretty accurate in testing except I did not test short circuit protection. In use I was able to pull the rated 6 amps continuously without trouble, and even exceed it at 7 amps. Over an hour of use the highest body temperature I recorded was 34C (93F). Barely warm. When the BMS cut off, the battery seemed to cycle on and off for very short pulses, but mostly read 1.08V while a load was still attached. Presumably if left in this state it could eventually drain the battery below the minimum. When I removed the load I measured the battery around 10.46V (BMS puts recovery around 10.5-10.8V). For charging I used a bench power supply set to 14.4V and 3A limits. I monitored the charge every 10 minutes so I could get a rough idea of power in, and charging time. It took about 1 hour and 50 minutes to charge. With my voltage/current records I calculated about 75.5Wh. The battery is rated at 76.8Wh. The BMS seemed to cut off charging on it's own. Despite supplying 14.4V to charge, the highest voltage I recorded from the battery was 14.29V before the current dropped to 0A. Over-voltage is supposed to kick in at 14.5-14.6V. After removing the charger, the battery read 13.98V. Pack temperatures during charging were also insignificant, but I forgot to record them. For normal use everything seems to fit the specs except the over-voltage being slightly low by my measurements. I'm satisfied that this pack does what's expected. I like that it barely produces any heat under normal use. ... show more

  • Does what it's supposed to do, for the most part.
Style: 12V 6Ah
First let me preface by saying I have some experience with LiFePO4 batteries, and actually made a 48V home solar system using around 17KW of batteries, wiring with a BMS and combining the individual cells. With that said, I'm still a novice and completely ignorant about a lot of battery/BMS/electrical topics. For this battery, I charged it using a bench power supply and I followed the directions on the paper which state a 14.6 Charging voltage. This tripped the BMS protection and stopped charging altogether. I lowered the voltage to reset and the battery would not recover from the tripped protection. I finally applied 15V as specified to reset the BMS and it worked, but I repeated the same results multiple times before finally having to charge at around 13.8V tops. The BMS on mine seems a little too sensitive, and doesn't seem to recover as quickly as it should, if at all. It also tripped when I connected it to an inverter, perhaps my fault as I didn't use a resistor but I really don't feel that should be necessary for a 12V battery, I dunno. Basically, it works, it surely beats lead acid any day, but the BMS could use some improvement. ... show more
