Description

“Kaufmann is performing the title role for the first time, and it’s hard to imagine him bettered. His striking looks make him very much the Romantic and romanticised outsider of Giordano’s vision. His voice, with its dark, liquid tone, soars through the music with refined ease and intensity: all those grand declarations of passion, whether political or erotic, hit home with terrific immediacy.” – The Guardian Presented in its Covent Garden premiere in January 2015, this staging – directed by David McVicar and conducted by the Royal Opera’s Music Director, Sir Antonio Pappano – shows a bloody tricolour daubed with the words “Even Plato banned poets from his Republic” – written by Robespierre on the death warrant of the historical Chénier, a poet and journalist sent to the guillotine in 1794 for criticising France’s post- revolutionary government. Andrea Chénier was a great success at its premiere at La Scala, Milan, on 28 March 1896. It established Giordano as a leading member of Italy’s giovane scuola, and has remained Giordano’s most popular opera, with occasional productions at leading opera houses. This production is the first by The Royal Opera since 1984. Of Giordano’s later operas, only Fedora (1898) has attracted some continued interest.

  • A Major Casting Flaw
I appreciated the production for its realism. Kaufmann sang herocially and with fine tone. The baritone was played and sung to great effect. However the soprano, Westbroek doesn't have the Italianate sound for this role and her appearance didn't help. Tebaldi owned the role at the Met for years. Her ability to crescendo and decrescendo on a note was particularly effective in the Act II duet...This is Giordano's only great opera; Fedora is terrible except for one tenor aria and the soprano aria near the beginning; both are very short. ... show more

  • A decent Chenier
This is the 2nd video of Andrea Chenier that I purchased from Amazon. It was enjoyable to watch/listen to. It has the advantage of technological improvements in recording over my earlier purchase, a black and white1960 live performance with Mario del Monaco and Renata Tebaldi. A London recording, in 1960, with these principals sets the bar. While I never heard del Monaco live, I heard Tebaldi at the Met in the 1960's opposite Corelli, Bergonzi and Tucker. ... show more

  • Andrea In Great Hands
The London reviews were correct; Kaufmann was made for the role of Chenier. He looks like a young poet. His singing is some of the best of his that I have heard, and I always marvel at the conrol he has over his instrument, particularly in singing softly and then building. The Gerard of this production is also exceptional; he controls the scene whenever he is on stage. Madelana is adequate; he sings the notes and works well with Kaufmann, but is not up to the standards of the male leads and heer acting is leaden. Pappano knows the opera well and has a great orchestra. ... show more

  • Great Zinkas ghost reigns
I enjoyed very much. Kaufmann is the finest dramatic tenor of the day and his soprano likewise musical but nor Idramatic. For that we must turn to the Correlli/Milanov 1962 rendering I recently purchased on CDecember. Great Zinka'so ghosts haunts this role if though she was in twilight and of course Correlli likewise turn a phrase as Del Monaco before him. I wanted to add that Eva Marie Westbroek facial distortions on certain vowel sounds to produce a larger sound is a distraction. It's I pity too and she did it too on the Mets Walkure...her voice is beautiful dramatically involved and a wonder. But her great Zinkas reigns. I wonder what her sieglinde sounded like. She did sing the part. ... show more

  • Beautiful...
Beautiful music... Beautiful singing... Beautiful production... Beautiful sound... Beautiful acting by all... If, as I, you have heard the music all your life but never seen the opera, you will be rewarded by this video...The BluRay is flawless, on my 65" LED it is magnificent, like sitting in your favorite seat, live at the Royal Opera House, with the best sound and view you can imagine. I cannot recommend this performance highly enough! ... show more

  • Outstanding!
I saw this opera for the first time in San Francisco, with Tebaldi, Richard Tucker, and Ettore Bastianini. None of the following productions could top that one. This POH production on this Blu-ray, however, comes very close. Westbroek, Kaufmann, and Lucic are outstanding.

  • For Kaufmann fans this is a must
I bought the dvd to hear Kaufmann in the role. He was perfect. This is a huge and demanding tenor part. He has an aria in each act and two big duets. He handled the role with no trouble.
