  • Excellent variety, price and quality. Great base for starting a tool set.
Size: 239 Pc
I bought this as a second travel set for a 3k mile cross country drive and plan to keep it in the back of my car for any other long trips. I shopped around a bit and found this to be the most inclusive. I am quite happy with GearWrench's quality and price. I am no professional mechanic but probably closer to a 'advanced' at home mechanic.I am no Snap On fan boy nor do i go out of my way to go with all Made in USA tools (but given the choice ill pick made in USA). That's not to say i don't appreciate good quality tools. I have a mixture of Snap-On, old Craftsman, Blue Point and even some Harbor Freight stuff. I originally bought a Craftsman set but was a bit turned off by the odd arrangement of things included and returned it; also almost every set nowadays seems to cater more towards SAE sizes (only 6 or 12pt metric sizes (not both), some do not include deep metric sockets..etc) which i find puzzling as mostly everything now days is metric. As a german car guy, this is a bit of a turnoff also. I was also dissapointed to see even the hand tools from Craftsman now are made in China. Comparing the set to my 10+ year old Craftsman set, the quality is close, but not on par to the older USA made stuff. The design has changed just slightly on the wrenches, in my opinion poor quality forging and even the stamping on the tools wasn't as good..etc. Just minor details like this which i wasn't quite happy with. No sense in paying a slight premium anymore i think for Craftsman. The only draw for Craftsman anymore (atleast for me) is ease of warranty exchange if you have a Sears nearby. GearWrench has a good reputation and included a good range of metric sockets in both standard and deep length aswell as 6 and 12pt. I also was pleased to see a 19mm combo wrench included..this is nitpicking a bit but all Craftsman sets stopped at 18mm and skipped some sizes in the metric range. On any Euro car you will eventually need a 19mm and occasionally you do come across some oddball sizes that are skipped with other sets. The ratchets included are teardrop type and adequate; but if you do even just a little wrenching on a regular basis do yourself a favor and get a good 72t (or more) 1/4" and 3/8" ratchet.. this makes a huge difference and is something you use all the time. I was happy it has a wide range of 1/2" metric sockets which comes in handy for suspension work. FYI aswell, this set is made in Taiwan. Overall this is a good starter set if you are putting together a set of tools, i bought a set a lot like this from Sears which i still use today. Just times have changed a bit and i now think this is a much better deal. I do have some other GearWrench items that have seen plenty of abuse and held up well; so i cant comment on how the warranty exchanges work. But honestly in my years of wrenching i have only broken a non impact extension used with an impact gun and a ratchet being used as a breaker bar... so i got what was coming to me. ... show more

  • Very nice tool set
Size: 232 Pc
This is great. The case works well and the drawers keep everything organized. I used it today and was impressed with the quality of the ratchets. Very nice.

  • MECHANIC OPINION: Great value, nearly complete set for german cars. (Or any car)
Size: 232 Pc
If you're buying this as a starter set, I recommend you also buy a 1/2" and 1/4" flex head ratchet so you can get in tight spaces easier. Get a proper 24" breaker bar, get a pry bar set. Get a GOOD plier set and a cheap pick set. All that gets you pretty far for the money, like an extra 150. Buy other crap as you need it. In my opinion, this set is more well rounded than the other Gearwrench sets and a better value just because of the ratcheting wrenches. Can't beat it for the price. I have a bmw with 100k and needed a set that I could keep in the car to do the majority of work I need to. I'm from a family of mechanics and we all agree that Gearwrench makes great tools. A lot of reviews speak to the quality of these tools and the plastic box as if they paid 600 bucks for this set. I bought it at 230. For the value, you will not find a better set. Even if it's like 300 bucks now, it's worth it. It comes with a complete ratcheting wrench set; that alone is amazing. Check the price of their ratcheting wrenches sets. I think I needed to get an E18 socket to complete the set for me. The 1/2" ratchet hasn't stripped and I've already put it through hell. The 1/4" stripped out because it's a 1/4" and I used it like an idiot, who cares? 84 tooth is great. The socket set is also complete up to 22mm, and it comes with deep sockets as well. I believe there's a spark plug socket too. I haven't had issues with the sockets, probably because I haven't used them in a gun. They have a really nice grip because of the ridges on the side, as well as the extensions. I didn't have any issues with the hex head sockets being seated wrong like others say. The plastic box is pretty sturdy as long as it didn't come damaged. Mine didn't. I sit on mine for a break and it barely creaks. Either way it aint rated for that. Who cares? The removeable trays are great for taking under the car with you. So what are you waiting for? ... show more

  • Best mechanics tool set ever
Size: 243 Pc
This has most of what you need for a mobile mechanics toolset & toolbox. The box itself is almost good enough on its own. We riveted a closure strap to keep the drawers from sliding, because this box bounces around the hayfield and down the road to rodeos. I bought one for my 14-yr old and 18-yr old. When they leave, I’m getting one for me. The fact that the box is good enough to contain it all, with a label and a spot for everything, it’s reinforcing the idea that all tools are always put away. One lost socket and you can get stranded when you need it. I’d suggest to gearwrench leave a little room in the drawer for tools we need to add. Special sockets, zip ties, etc. ... show more

  • Missing
Size: 243 Pc
Set looks great. I love their tools. This is a full 6 point set including wrenches. It’s missing a 1/4” drive shallow 7/16, so I need to figure out how to get a replacement so I have the full set of everything.

  • Best value tool set out there
Size: 239 Pc
I spent a couple of months researching mechanics toolsets, and although I'd love to have a set made by SnapOn, I haven't won the lottery and will stick with more realistically priced tools. The great thing about this set is that it skips very few sizes, it's made extremely well, and the plastic box and trays that it came in come apart to fit into a rolling tool chest with drawers. On the yellow plastic trays, I actually used a Sharpie to color the raised numbers that tells the size of the sockets, so it's much easier to read and reach for the right size. So far, I've used this set to change the spark plugs and front brakes in my Subaru Outback. Everything has worked flawlessly. Can't wait for more projects that require these tools! ... show more
