I thought my hair was falling out and turning to straw because I was getting older until I had my water tested by the state and it was incredibly high in Cl, Mg, Ca, Ba, etc... It was so off-the-charts hard af high a lab person called to talk to me about it. My landlord wouldn't add a water softener, so I figured I was SOL. I've only been washing my hair once a week the last year because my hair was so dry/straw-like and was falling out (I had to wear bandanas and beanies most days). I've also been dealing with chronic eczema since I moved here. I did a little research and tried shampoos and conditioners for hard water. They were expensive and I didn't notice a difference. I found this filter, but was skeptical because I'd read online they only remove Cl and figured the other elements were contributing just as much to my hair issues, but wth did I have to lose, so I bought a filter anyhow. The maintenance guys had applied way too much plumbers tape and I couldn't remove the shower head, so I had to wait a couple of months for a friend to visit (I recently relocated and don't know many people here) to help. He had some issues with the removal, but the installation of the filter and shower head onto the filter was a cinch. There was no leaking and the water pressure's still the same. I took my first shower with the filter about an hour ago and used my normal shampoo and conditioner. It was like night and day. When I applied the shampoo it didn't instantly dry out and tangle my hair on contact like before the filter. The conditioner made a difference instantly and didn't have to be left on my head for 10 min. I styled my hair quickly and with minimal fuss like I used to be able to do. I'm so thrilled hair's soft and manageable again! ... show more

  • Easy to install and does the trick
Style: GXSM01HWW
I liked this particular design because I couldn't lose height in how far the shower head came down. Super easy to install and seems to do the trick!

  • Works well!
Style: GXSM01HWW
I havent run any actual test (although this is certified to remove chlorine). But the water feels better after installing this. I’m no longer as worried about the chlorine. Slightly awkward shape though and not sure how easy it will be to replace the filter. Also installation was a bit tricky with respect to ensuring there were no leaks ... show more

  • Lasted less than two weeks.
Style: GXSM01TBL
The sandy material inside the filter ends up clogging the filter screen within days of use. Lasted less than two weeks. Creates a sludge that can be found nowhere else in my home but I waited too long to return it.

  • Best filter

Order other filters and this is the best. Especially because there’s third party filter replacement

  • A CHEMICAL REACTION RATHER THAN FILTER?
Style: GXSM01HWW
The thing does seem to make the water less chlorine, but I only test ran it on my hands. They felt strange afterwards so I started doing research. This is not a carbon filter, or what you would think of a such. The content is a particulate, looks brown like sand, and although it may perhaps trap stuff like a filter, but according to the ge appliances website it's "copper / zinc", media which means that the water is being run through ground up metals, which are causing a chemical reaction that is modifying the chlorine molecules in the water. It also has a prop 65 warning on it. So if you are hypersensitive to touching metals or have other issues, realize that this will run your shower water through metal particulate. ... show more

  • Better water, but a learning curve with leaks
Style: GXSM01TBL
My son and hair was immediately softer after we started using this. Definitely takes some getting used to when you have lived your life with hard water. It leaked a bit at the top for the first couple of weeks, but we were able to use some extra tape to re-install and some of the leaking stopped. Then we learned that the shower head you are using with it needs to be free of hard water build-up, so you need to soak and clean it with a de-scaler and then you should be able to avoid leaks! ... show more
