  • Fantastic Health & Fitness Watch w/one Caveat
Color: Black - Small Size: 41 MM Style: Music Pattern Name: Smartwatch
BACKGROUND I am a former serious marathon and ultra runner, cyclist, swimmer, and Ironman triathlete now in my later middle-age period with revised expectations and goals. I've been a Garmin user since the original GPS "watch" that required an arm band receiver, and have used the Forerunner 10 and 235 as well. I had no complaints about the capability or performance of the Forerunner 235, but was interested in the expanded health tracking features of the new 255 model. I also listen to music and podcasts on Spotify quite often, and the Music features of this model appealed to me. OVERALL IMPRESSIONS AND HEALTH MONITORING First, I am impressed with the sleep tracking of this model, which I find mostly accurate except sometimes when it doesn't distinguish the difference between waking and getting up. I find that tracking HRV (heart rate variability) is a very good indicator of sleep quality in addition to the usual deep sleep, light sleep, REM, awake, etc. markers. This also correlates very well with a feature I especially appreciate, that being Body Battery. I have a standalone pulse oximeter and have not activated that function on this watch. WORKOUT AND GPS TRACKING As for GPS and workout performance and tracking, I have found the unit to perform flawlessly thus far, down to the side of the road/lane on which I have run or cycled. GARMIN COACH I have a deep background and understanding of training load and structure, and have coached triathlon professionally in the past. I have also used sites/apps like Training Peaks as a tool, to good effect. I am currently getting back on the road after being sidelined for a long time with back issues and set the goal of completing a half marathon to motivate me and serve as a shorter term goal. Curious about the coaching functions included with this watch, I signed up for one of the plans that is available through the Garmin Connect app, and so far I have found it to be quite good at suggesting workouts and adjusting load and expectations based on completed workouts. It's a really cool bonus for me to have at my current level of fitness, and I would recommend the watch to newer endurance athletes over similar products based on this function alone. BATTERY LIFE Battery life is quite adequate and lasts for days without recharging under normal activity. A very nice bonus aspect is that it recharges very quickly using the supplied connector. SOFTWARE The only negative I've experienced so far is with the software and Music functions. The Garmin Connect app works great and I love being able to configure the displays. As for Music, I am disappointed that the only way to load music to the watch is via the Garmin Express app, which is clunky and outdated. But worse, this app has crashed every single time I try to access the Music Apps tab to connect Spotify. This has happened on both my MacBook Air and iMac, so perhaps it's an issue with iOS. It is due to this issue and the inability to take advantage of having Spotify on the watch that causes me to deduct one star, and I can say without reservation that if I had purchased the regular (non-Music) version of this watch I would give it a 5-star rating. SIZING & CONCLUSION I purchased the smaller (41mm) version of this watch simply because the larger (46mm) size wasn't available. It feels a little small, but I can live with it. If I were to go back and order any of the 255 variations (assuming equal availability) I would definitely get the larger version and probably skip the Music edition, although I'm still hopeful that will be resolved with a software or firmware update. I would recommend this watch to anyone serious about monitoring their health and fitness, who likes to get out on the road and structure their training. It is an excellent training tool and aid, and a great motivator, and although the Music functions do not work at this time for me and I would prefer the larger iteration, I am still very pleased with this watch. ... show more

  • Hardware is good, but software needs quite improvement
Color: Tidal Blue Size: 46 MM Style: Non-Music Pattern Name: Smartwatch
I am a marathon runner and cyclist. After using this watch for almost 3 weeks continuously, this watch works pretty well from my observation. Health tracking, sleep tracking, and GPS tracking all work almost flawlessly. I am also impressed that Garmin provides me with a very useful workout based on my fitness and training load after I set up my race calendar. The only negative experience is the software sometimes sucks. For example, I tried to set up the heart rate zone (based on HRR) on my watch for the different types of activities several times, no matter whether I configured it from the watch directly or via Connect app, sometimes this watch just ignored the value I configured and use the default value right away. After several attempts, it finally settles. Besides, when I download the data field from Connect IQ store and install it on the watch, I cannot see this data field app from the Connect app so I cannot use it in the data screen. I have to clean up both apps and re-login again so that I can see this data field app in the Connect app and use it. Even worse, after I configure the data field app in the data screen, the next time when I start an activity, the data field I set up before is just gone and becomes a timer. For the workaround, I try not to use any 3rd party app in the data screens. As a software engineer, I cannot understand why these obvious bugs are not resolved yet when this watch was released several months ago. If I didn't encounter these annoying software bugs, I'd love to give it 5 stars rating. ... show more

  • Best watch I've owned yet
Color: Black - Small Size: 41 MM Style: Music Pattern Name: Smartwatch
After a few months of researching, and after trying out and not really enjoying an Instinct Solar (garmin) watch...I settled on this forerunner. I'm so glad I did. I'm no pro-athlete but regularly go on hikes and have started easing into running. This watch has a program to train - kind of like couch to 5k - and it's really great. The interface is easy to use, and easy to view (the Instinct was always so dark and hard to navigate). I got the smaller version, I have small wrists/hands and this is a perfect size. I did get watch face protectors too, as I'm clumsy and slam into things often so I've had quite a few cracked screens. Again, the brightness of the screen, easy navigation and customization are fantastic so I would absolutely recommend this watch. ... show more

  • Great fitness tracker
Color: Slate Gray Size: 46 MM Style: Non-Music Pattern Name: Smartwatch
The Forerunner 255 has been a great fitness tracker so far. I use it mainly for running, and the reported distance are within 0.3% of my measurements on Strava or Google Maps, and that's for trails through wooded parks. Also very pleased with the battery life. 1 hour of GPS use uses less than 1% of the battery, and without GPS the watch will last 2 weeks between charges. Despite the relatively large size, it feels light enough on the wrist, and I like the looks of it. My previous Vivoactive 3 had a touch screen that didn't always work well in the rain, or when I had gloves on, and I'm happier with physical buttons. This definitely is a fitness tracker first, with smart watch features added. ... show more

  • Does everything.
Color: Slate Gray Size: 46 MM Style: Non-Music Pattern Name: Smartwatch
I bike, swim, run and weight train. I LOVE THIS WATCH. Gives me all the stats I need, and seems very accurate. Great for the price. I previously had a Garmin Venu, and miss the AMLOED screen and touch screen, but I get sooo much more, and for the price, the trade off is worth it. I could have bought the 955 for the touch screen, but it did not seem worth it to me for the additional upgrades I would use, such as running power and things beyond my needs. ... show more

  • Followup to review by Milesian
Color: Black Size: 46 MM Style: Music Pattern Name: Smartwatch
One important followup to the review by Milesian: The watch does NOT require the Garmin Express app in order to load music onto the device. You can set the watch to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode by holding the UP button, select System, then USB Mode set to MTP. You can then connect to any computer with the included USB cable and then drag-and-drop MP3 files onto the device (this should work on any OS; I have tested on Windows and Linux, and it should also work on Mac). ... show more
