  • It's a great watch, heart rate sensor can be not-so-good at times.
If you're not used to the world of sports watches, don't expect something like an Apple Watch. It's specifically designed for athletes and Garmin pulls out all of the stops with the Fenix. I owned a Forerunner 235 for 3 years prior to buying the Fenix 6. The Forerunner is a great watch, but the Fenix 6 takes it up to whole other level. It's a fairly big watch and I have small wrists (see picture), but I don't mind the size. I wear it all day and all night. Pro tip: loosen the strap at night. The HR data seems to be accurate enough at night even when its loose. The buttons are high quality and easy to use while running. I find it very easy to get data from the watch and use it while running. There are a LOT of features and menus and it could probably take a full day just to figure out where everything is. For example, you just started running but you want to turn the auto-lap feature off... well, be prepared for some fiddling at first. Luckily I had a sense of where this was from using my Forerunner but stuff like that can be difficult to figure out Here are the top 5 features I like: * Altimeter: When I do hills runs, it's nice to know in real time how much elevation gain I've covered * Training Status: This gives me some feedback about my training. Take it with a grain of salt but it's nice to have a second opinion about how I'm training. See my comments below about heart rate tracking * Compass & Maps: I use the Garmin Connect app to plan long runs then load them onto the watch. I added a compass to the main activity screen so it'll tell me which direction I'm heading and which direction my course is. If I get off course I can quickly figure out which direction is the right direction. I have not used the visual maps feature because honestly it seems hard to read. * Highly customizable screens. Much more than the Forerunner 235. In fact it can be a bit overwhelming! * Battery life: it's very good, and very customizable to squeeze out more battery life. The pulse oximeter is ... cool I guess, but kinda useless. I honestly don't know who would get value out of this sensor. It always just reads 95-99% for me and I have no idea what to do with this data anyway. Maybe if I contracted COVID-19 this could be useful, but day-to-day it seems not useful at all. My biggest gripe is the heart rate monitor. I've only had this thing a month and it's been fairly cold where I live. Sometimes the heart rate monitor is accurate, and sometimes it'll randomly jump to 175 bpm or higher for no reason and stay there for 15 minutes, even when it's obvious I'm closer to 140bpm. Sometimes it'll START at 160 when I'm just warming up and running REALLY slow and then eventually settles down to something more reasonable. This throws off all of my training metrics. The watch will say I need 3.5 days to recover from a fairly easy run because it thinks I was running really hard. It happens enough to be kind of a problem, so I ended up spending MORE money on a chest strap HRM which works much better. When I'm not running, the heart rate data seems accurate. When I'm sleeping it seems accurate too. ... show more

  • Better battery than Apple Watch and better data for outdoors based exercises.
I have owned many wrist top computers including several Suunto models and casios over the years. I bought this is an alternative to my Apple Watch series 4. While many of the things about the AW-4 were helpful they weren’t giving me the data I was looking for and yes the heart rate monitoring on the AW-4 was a bit more accurate. However the real data I wanted was better distance accuracy, among other things. I primarily use the Fenix 6 for; hiking, xcountry skiing, downhill skiing, running, and overall better data for helping improve areas of general health. The battery on this thing buries the Apple Watch. I never wore my Apple Watch to bed to monitor sleep (never saw the point) and the AW-4 wouldn’t last from a days use and through the night. The Fenix 6 lasts and gives very amazing data that has helped to see how bad my sleep patterns are. Also the comfort of the Fenix 6 is much nicer than the Apple Watch. The screen on the Fenix 6 has taken a bit to get used to. The brightness I feel could be a bit better without using the light. The Apple Watch had a much more crisp display however the raise to view on the Apple Watch was annoying at times so the Fenix 6 wins in this category as well. Also the Apple Watch consistently would get triggered to ‘stop activity’ at the worse times based on the buttons getting triggered. I tried multiple bands etc and especially under ski gloves it was an issue. So here again the fenix6 wins. There are features on the Garmin that I may never use but with the amount of time spent in the outdoors from being in the ocean to the mountains the Garmin is the way to go compared to the Apple Watch. I do miss having the response feature for texts with my iPhone vs the feature only being on Android. If you’re looking for a outdoors based wrist top computer or ‘smart watch’ the Garmin is the way to go over the Apple Watch in my opinion. ... show more

  • It does motivate you to stay in shape
I thought it would be bulky, cumbersome but a necessary evil to keep track of my activities and stay motivated. Boy I was wrong, it looks wonderful despite my moderately sized wrist. The coach program is fantastic - tracking of steps, other activities... the configurability and flexibility also fantastic. It does take a while though to understand what all the button sequences are! I have not checked the accuracy of the HR monitor, sometimes it feels a bit off, and the sleep tracking is not fantastic. Have had a rough couple of weeks and realized the watch tells my I've been sleeping all 8 hours, when I have unfortunately been seeing on my table watch 2:12, 2:42, 3:05, 3:20, 3:45, 4:01, 4:40, 5:30 and time to get up. So, sleep tracking not good. Love the fact that it can sync up with my airpods, so can go for a run without my phone - and since it does have Garmin pay I can do the watch payment thingy also while out on a run to get my post workout fix. Expensive, but worth it. ... show more

  • So far, so good
Very impressive watch. I previously used a Polar Vantage V. The Garmin Fenix 6 absolutely destroys the Polar in terms of features. There's a lot of features. Probably too many. But it's cool and you can brag to your friends that if you ever go skydiving you'll be ready because your watch literally came with a Jump Master mode. The price is excessive but they have this market cornered. There is no suitable alternative that offers 2 weeks of battery life, activity tracking, smart watch features, and top of the line fitness tracking. However, if you're going to ship a watch with a nuclear orange watchband...please include a normal color in the box as well. No one wants this band. 90% of these bands are going in the trash or the dreaded misc kitchen drawer. ... show more
