  • Works very well as display unit for my Garmin RVR 315
Style: Device Only Pattern: GPS Bike Computer
I bought to use exclusively as a display unit for my life saver , the Garmin RVR 315, although the unit has many other functions . I used the Garminiq app to install my bike radar traffic app , then entered the setting to display the vehicle relative , absolute speed and distance . I created a screen contains only the data , so numbers appear large and easy to read . I deleted and deactivated all other data . I took it out for a few rides and worked like a champ , alerting my to the vehicles , and the speed , relative speed and absolute speed for vehicles behind . I am also using the live tracking function , so my family track my progress while I am on the road biking . The unit has numerous functions , but I am using the cyclometer iPhone app with a polar H heart rate monitor for every thing else . Make sure to have the Garmin connect app running on your phone . After the ride , you can use the Garmin connect app to view your ride with a ton of data and stat . I love it , it was worth every penny ... show more

  • Great improvement over the Edge 800
Style: Device Only Pattern: GPS Bike Computer
I replaced my ailing Edge 800 with an Edge 830. I’m pleased that the 830’s display is far more readable on my morning rides when the sun is low in the sky—a welcome improvement. Bootup, GPS acquisition time and battery life are improved, too. The internal maps are amazing. I’m surprised to see the detail of our local riding paths (not streets). One gripe: The main display shows distance, large and very readable, but speed is displayed in a much smaller font. With old eyes and vibration, it can be hard to read. There’s plenty of room on the display to make fonts larger. Why not? Operation is semi-intuitive but you can get lost among all the menus and widgets. The printed manual is no help as none of this is covered. Go on-line for complete descriptions. To find features that are buried deep in menus, search the internet… “Edge 830 [your desired feature].” The Garmin Connect phone app has lots of fancy features to encourage your riding activity such as earning “badges” for your progress. Here again, it’s easy to get lost among all the features and menus. The app connects via Bluetooth to the 830 during and after a ride. If you’re a gadget geek, you’ll love it. If not, you might consider a more basic model. For a very complete review and description of features, search the web for “dcrainmaker Edge 830.” This impartial review compares the 830 with other models and has many screen photos. ... show more

  • Great improvement
Style: Device Only Pattern: GPS Bike Computer
Love the upgrade. My old 130 was very good at what it did but the 830 is a major improvement. Glad I got this new device. Enjoying the larger screen and color. Options abound for its setup and links well with Garmin Varia. Highly recommended.

  • Works out of the box, but needs tuning
Style: Sensor Bundle Pattern: GPS Bike Computer
I just got the Garmin 830 sensor bundle touch screen cycling computer. The size is perfect. Touch screen works well. The display is easily visible during the ride and very responsive. There is an option where you can plot your course by using the Garmin App on your phone and then you can push the course to the Garmin. For my first ride, it gave me a lot of “off course” alerts as when the route was created, it sometimes had me on the highway vs. the bike path. The GPS by default was set for Smart mode, probably designed to save battery life. But If you look at the pictures of my ride, it cuts corners. I changed the setting to every second and I will see how it goes. I used the speed sensor and the cadence sensors which I like a lot. I could not find a way to tell the speed sensor which straps to the wheel axel the size of my tires. On your ride you can swipe the screen to see different pages of data. One of the screens has a nice picture view of the on coming elevation changes so you know in advance if a hill is coming, if your close to finishing a climb or it you will be going down a hill. Another change I had to make was to add the heart rate data field to the Garmin. By default, Garmin does not include heart rate on any of the screens even though a HR strap is included in the box. It was easy to add during my ride and now it’s there moving forward. The 830 also assumed my ride was a Mountain ride. There is a setting under Activity Profiles that lets you change your Default Ride Type. Over all I am pleased with this new model and I highly recommend it. The price hurts a little. ... show more

  • I really, really like this computer
Style: Device Only Pattern: GPS Bike Computer
I researched a long time on this and finally decided on the Garmin - I'm really glad I did. The touch screen is really nice to use. It's almost as smooth as my phone but the difference is immaterial. It works great. I found the setup to be very easy. Maybe it's not as easy as using a separate app on your phone but it's plenty easy. Plus, I kind of like exploring new interfaces so it was fun learning how it works. I really, really, really love the integration with my Di2 shifters. I use this on a tandem where I can't see the rear derailleur. Having the gear display on the screen is invaluable for knowing which gear I'm in when coming to stops or sudden changes in terrain. The very first time I used it, I came back from the ride and "ended" the ride on the computer. A few seconds later the Strava app on my watch binged and confirmed that my ride had been uploaded and was ready for viewing. So cool. One of the big reasons I went with this is the Trailforks integration. I went off-road and, when I wasn't quite sure where I was, pulled up trailforks and got my location. (I keep thinking of cool things) I wanted to try loading a course so I could see how the turn-by-turn directions worked so I plotted a course on line and loaded it into the computer. A little backstory - I have hearing aids that pair with my phone. Phone audio is pumped straight into my brain seemingly. Guess what? The route guidance comes straight into my ears through my hearing aids - brilliant! I really like this computer. ... show more
