Description

Jiffy Pellets are made of sterile peat growing medium, enclosed in a decomposable net. This net biodegrades in garden soil or compost, but it retains strength through the critical seedling and transplant stages. No pot is needed, and the growing medium offers great aeration and water retention. Speed and degree of decomposition will vary with soil or compost conditions. Each 3/4" thick compressed Jiffy peat pellet expands to a 2" diameter (50 mm) x 3-1/4" tall cylinder , ideal for larger vegetable transplants. Promotes great root development.

I like these because instead of filling up pots or trays with loose seed starter, you just place the pellets in a tray and soak them in water. Once soaked, you press the seeds into the top. There is very little mess. They retain water very well. Once the plants are growing well, they can be planted directly into a pot or the garden. I use a small greenhouse tray to sprout the seeds. When the sprouts emerge, I place the lid so that air can circulate under it and acclimate the plants to dryer air. When there is no more condensation in the lid, I go ahead and remove it. The mesh on the pellets stayed together after seeds were planted in them, and were watered. They were a great size, and can be planted as is, after the seeds start to become plants.

I grabbed these to refill my Jiffy green house as they don’t sell them at the Walmart nearest our home. After planting the first time nothing came up. I took a second set of pods and tried again. I am unsure if the peat that is in the pods just wasn’t the right thing but I never got any seeds to sprout. Would have returned had I not used them. It would been almost just as cost effective to go buy a new greenhouse with the pods included. ... show more
