  • Killer First Guitar....for Beginners and Experts too.
Style: Right Handed Color: Blue
Well, here I sit with sore fingers after yet another session with this beauty. This is a fantastic guitar at a great price. It looks great, and the thinline body makes it easy to get to the strings...it's just closer to your body. The stock strings are decent, but I put some D'Addario EJ17 (medium gauge) on the guitar and it sounds amazing. Strings make a heyooge difference. I invested in a Super Snark electronic tuner and it's an easy and fun way to get a guitar in-tune quickly. I went down to .012 D'Addario Phosphor Bronze strings and this thing really sings with these strings. I tried 80/20 (that's 80% percent Bronze to Zinc) and I thought the guitar was too bright with these. Because of the woods used; Nato wood for the body (a less-expensive Eastern Mahogany) with Spruce top and Rosewood fingerboard, the guitar projects very well...surprisingly so. It's not a full Dreadnought body, but it plays almost like one to my ears...and I'm a big fan of that Martin sound. I also compared this to a Simon and Patrick Woodland Spruce, and it holds up well. It's amazing that they avoided laminate in a guitar this inexpensive, assuming the Nato body isn't laminate. The action is pretty good, and the strings aren't overly far from the neck, though some people have shaved down the bridge for a little easier action. Any good luthier can set this guitar up for you, or if you're the daring type you can do this yourself. Some have mentioned improving the pickup with a EQ 505R Pickup, which I may very well do myself. I haven't tried the guitar in an amp yet, but acoustic amps are expensive! So far I like the Fishman Loudbox Artist, since it has real control over guitar and mic (in the same amp) and has a headphone jack. Yes. Headphone jack! This is a must when you live in an apartment or as I do, a townhome with shared walls. This is an amazing value. I'm just a casual beginner guitarist getting back to guitar after decades playing other instruments. This guitar is gorgeous in appearance and it's quite easy to play, even for people with smaller hands like me. My guitar playing has really improved....and it's all because this instrument was both affordable and great quality that my interest in guitar-playing (and skill) has reached a new level. I'd happily buy another one if something happened to this one, and can heartily recommend it. 5 Stars! ... show more

  • it's a light guitar, but has good strong sound. Handle with care, it looks good, plays good and feels good, but I'm no expert.
Style: Left Handed Color: black
Hey, the box was in good shape, it was wrapped well. I was a little surprised how light the guitar was but still with a full bright sound. The strings were not harsh on my fingers, I am a new beginner. I borrowed heavier bigger guitars that were for right handers. I find strumming and picking with my left hand much easier for my left handed dominant hand. This was a pleasant change using a left handed guitar. It is my first guitar, and I am taking it to our local music store to have the guitar tech go through it and tweak it a bit. for a "ready to play" set up. We will plug it in and try it out on an amp as well. It's not perfect but, that's why taking it a tech helps. For example one of the flat washers on the head stock that the guitar strings winds on is lose. So I would like to address that when they rewind the string and get that flat washer tight and not lose, when I lifted the neck into playing position, I saw it move under that post. Just a quality control when they use those fast winders/ and rewinders in the factory. Get yourself a tuner. It wasn't in tune when it arrived. The frets were not awful as some critics said. I will know more when the guitar tech looks at. Another thing I noticed, was where the fret boat meets the body of the guitar there is a small silvery like small bead line where these 2 pieces meet. It's the same color of the dot paint used at the fretboard sides to indicate where the frets are. Maybe that is another construction issue. I am going to ask the guitar tech at the local shop about the bridge possible being too high, strings 3-4 seem harder to push. But hey that could be me. The thinnest string is so transparent I almost can't see it. Novice complaints. I have some 80/20 martin custom light strings I am going to put on it, in the future. Use different instruction books and look up good scale and guitar exercises to practice if you are a beginner. It's a fun journey and I look forward to learning and doing more things with this guitar. It's a black beauty and hopefully I can learn to play as good as it looks. I love all types of music. I am going to take lessons in the fall, I have my eye on a lefty PRS custom SE 24 for Christmas 2018 I want to play electric at some point. I also like the martin acoustics, but I want more practice time and gather more skills before sinking more hard earned cash in a hobby. This guitar is my gateway drug to my new guitar addiction. I will give you an update on what the guitar tech says about it, they will have a more objective and knowledgeable view of the guitar.. For me, It was a real treat to strum and pick chords again, even if they were a little out of tune. ... show more
