I wanted a murphy bed so we can convert a room to a playroom for my kids but still have a good bed for when guests stay over. I'm fairly handy so I bought this kit to build the bed myself. Not to pat myself on the back but it turned out pretty well. Be forewarned, this kit is just hardware and the plans to make the bed frame and cabinet. That means it's just metal plates, screws, gas pistons and legs. You can't buy this kit and expect someone to 'assemble' it. You have to go buy the raw building materials, cut it, glue/screw/nail it all together, It took me 10 days of working 3-5 hours a day in the garage, but that also included time to add trim to the cabinet and paint it. Only then do you actually assemble it into a bed. The plans were fantastic, and as long as you follow them and make precise cuts, you should have no problems during assembly. It also came with a dvd also that I didn't bother to watch. The plans were more than sufficient. Read the plans completely and put together your shopping list before going to the store. The plans included a list for fasteners but i found it to be inaccurate. Add up the screws or nails you plan to use for each step and buy them based on that. I ended up with a lot of 1 1/4" screws that I didn't need and not enough 2" screws. For people who like shaker style cabinets, I found that the 1/4" plywood left over from the bed platform can be cut up and nailed/glued to the cabinet face to add shaker style trim to the cabinet face. That way you can add a design to the cabinet face without any additional cost. The hardware itself is rock solid and I ended up with a piece of furniture I really like. This is great set! I don’t usually write reviews for any products but felt the need to write one for this one since it’s made in the USA. The set came with two sets of instructions which were really easy to follow. The material list was very well put together and it truly included all of the materials required for the job and nothing more. The instructions were easy to follow. All of the measurements were very accurate which allowed the assembly to be easy and painless. As long as you can follow along, you will be successful. Overall my experience with this set is 5 stars. The instruction manual has a cut list and plams, and they even offer phone support if you want to ask questions. Bed is sturdy and better than IKEA furniture for the cost.

The kit and instructions are high quality. I think the black #10 3/4" screws are undersized, but not a big deal. The issue is not the kit, but the precision work required to build the darn thing. Except for the #10 3/4" inch screws, the components are high quality. In fact the kit seems almost trivial when compared to the work involved in constructing the wooden cabinet enclosure. Construction of the cabinet is a precise exercise while working with full size pieces of plywood. I replaced some of the smaller components with "select pine" and employed the "panel saw" services offered by my local home improvement store. You can rip the large plywood pieces with a hand power saw and straight edge, but a panel saw is better. Make sure the same person does all the sawing and double-check measurements before leaving the store. I made two trips to get the panel sawing done and the second helper appeared to have a bad a "night-before experience" and was not precise in his cutting efforts. I later had to square things up with a router. This project requires a lot of work. Also make sure there is sufficient head room to affix the cabinet to the wall. I only have 3 1/2" of clearance and had to modify the way in which the cabinet is connected to the wall. This project will test your love of woodworking. The DVD instructions show an ideal installation with a lot of room, a really flat wall, and plenty of ceiling height (you will need a helper to move the thing). Also the quality of work in the DVD, given cabinet grade plywood as the wood of choice, was not that of high quality furniture,e.g. splintering, rough edges, buried screw heads. My installation was complicated by the fact that I do not have the benefit of high ceilings and a really flat (plumb) wall. With an inner spring mattress purchased from a local "Mattress Factory" store, the bed has proved itself comfortable as my wife and I can attest. We decided not to add trim as the plain box looks good in the Mancave. Selection of the pull-down handles is an important design choice (we used brass looking door handles from our local hardware store that would not be out of place on a barn door). When all is said and done, it works. Pulling down the mattress is easy and smooth. Making the bed is a little cumbersome, but all in all a good choice. It fulfills the need we had. Using "select pine" for a couple of the smaller parts allowed me to reduce the number of 4 x 8 panels by one. Still, there was a lot of sizable scraps left over. Good luck. ... show more

This was an excellent kit with very easy to follow instructions. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on this to make it look furniture grade. Would recommend starting with cabinet grade plywood as well. I spent about 40 hours total labor making this unit and an additional side shelf. Decorative trim, etc. 2 recommendations , drill and put your handles on before putting the 1/4 panel down on the bed support frame. And make a 2-1/4” runner across the bottom of the cabinet to secure one base to the other. I also pocket hole drilled and mounted my vertical assembly bottoms into the trim once squared up. I would interpret the dimensions 2-5” wider on the verticals the next time I do this so there is room to run electrical and store pillows in the bed. Lesson learned.
