Description

What high school was like for the rest of us. The modern classic, Freaks And Geeks, arrives on Blu-ray at last! Set in 1980 at the fictional McKinley High in Detroit, Freaks And Geeks focused on two groups of outsiders: the stoners, tough kids and bad girls; and the brains, nerds and squares. Although this Emmy award-winning series ran for only one season, it has remained a cult favorite and a benchmark of quality television. A funny and authentic portrait of high school life with all of its horrors and triumphs, Freaks And Geeks resonates with anybody who has ever felt like they don’t quite fit in. The series’ legacy) including the ongoing success of many of its key personnel, from creator Paul Feig (Bridesmaids), to executive producer Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), to cast members such as Linda Cardellini, Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Jason Segel) is undoubtedly secure in the hearts and minds of its passionate (and ever-growing) fanbase. Jam-packed with a treasure trove of extras, this Blu-ray collection also features all eighteen episodes in both original broadcast aspect ratio and a special widescreen presentation. Join Shout! Factory in celebrating this one-of-a-kind series with a set you’ll Geek out over.

  • The Best Release of This Show To Date!
Short lived, but well lived like a character of legacy in real life. Freaks and Geeks kick-started many a comedy enthusiast's career, obliged itself to a nudge for some, and became a sensation that was cemented into comedy so uniquely that it was tragic to see it go. This collection gives us a two-fer. Not only do we get the original full-screen presentation of the show, but we now get the widescreen editions of all the episodes. They come as separate cases, so there is no confusion. You get the usual assortment of extras, good video and audio, and a nice case to fit it all in. This show had Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Knocked Up, Ghostbusters 2016) helm it with support from Judd Apatow (whose catalog is so much more substantial and has had occasional Feig influence), Within only a handful of episodes, you see an actor from the Apatow catalog appear, such as James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, with occasional appearances from various others. The show had done much within the episodes it had to work with, leaving room for much more but getting outdone like so many. The big kicker is the music. This show, like many, used licensed music for much of its tone and presentation. Because so many notable artists had music in the show, it created a difficulty trying to produce physical copies of it. Fortunately, Shout! Factory came through and managed it and went a step further to give us this. It's perhaps the best consolidation of the show you're going to get. If you're a fan of comedy, this show is worth adding to your catalog. It's the Breakfast Club, done Apatow/Feig style and manages to do it well. ... show more

  • Should be required viewing for all teachers, students, parents... Everyone)
I'm a very critical cinephile, so when i say this series is a masterpiece, you better believe it is. Top notch writing, directing, acting, production values... It's like you're watching 18 very polished mini-movies. But the most significant thing about this series is that it's real and shows humanity at its best. I grew up in Michigan in the same time period, so this resonates with me strongly - but the messages of every episode are timeless. If it's naive to think a one season show could potentially change the way a person treats other people, then i guess i would have to say I'm pretty naive. Watch this show, you won't regret it. ... show more

  • A++, does include original music
i’d been wanting this for a while and when Netflix pulled it from streaming, i knew i had to. glad i did. two of my favorites coming together in a presentation that’s nothing short of amazing. typical Shout Factory quality, if you’re familiar with them at all. the extras are bordering on overwhelming honestly, and i love how the 4:3 and widescreen versions are separated and both have commentary. the transfer looks and sounds great - ive never heard the subtle echo of the Weirs dining room before. same goes for the AC hum and buzz of fluorescent lights at McKinley High. since they shot on 35mm, you can see a very subtle grain throughout that i think is beautiful. the commentaries are worth the $50 alone. each episode has usually a couple with different sets of crew and actors. watching episodes with them on has been so entertaining and informative. i had read on here that it’s missing the original music - this is NOT TRUE. not sure what this person is referring to but they are mistaken. somebody should fix that cos it kept me from buying for a while until i could confirm otherwise. ... show more

  • The great tragedy is that we only got one season. The great delight is that we have that season.
Like all tv shows I watch, the program has to grab me within the first few minutes of the first episode. This show joins the very small number of programs that does just that. Some shows are an “acquired taste?” I think you mean I should keep watching until I lower my standards. Hard pass on that. Make a good, well-written show that doesn’t depend on sex and profanity (the kind of shows created by talentless hacks), and I’ll watch it. I watched a clip of Freaks and Geeks online before purchasing it, and I was sold. I wasn’t in high school in the 80’s (more like grade school), but I can relate to many of the topics. The reality that this show only lasted for one season tells you everything you need to know about the American television industry. I thoroughly enjoyed this show; I hope you will too. ... show more

  • Wow Freaks and Geeks in 1080p and Widescreen
I saw that Freaks and Geeks was on Blu-Ray. I ordered it without reading very carefully. And guess what? There are two complete sets of the series in here. Set 1 is the standard 4:3 ratio that it was originally broadcast in. Then ins a separate case there is the remastered widescreen version! And then another disc with extra features. What a great surprise. I'm going to make my 16 year old daughter watch it with me. ... show more

  • For all the Freaks and Geeks fans
I started watching the show on Hulu recently and it compelled me to buy the set when it was on sale. Love the show sad that it only got one season but it’s an amazing program and the extras are great too. Highly recommend this to any fans of freaks and geeks or of any of the actors in the show. Came well packaged and the sad itself is excellent. ... show more

  • Loaded with quality improvements!
It’s a common curse to buy any disc-format show/movie, only to see it finally available on a streaming service the next day. For Freaks & Geeks, I was still grateful to buy this collection. The episodes are lovingly remastered in widescreen... looks so fresh, it’s like watching it for the first time. ... show more

  • One of the best shows ever looks fantastic on blu-ray
One of my favorite shows. Bummed it was canceled too soon. This bluray version just looks fantastic. Comparing to the 1080p HD versions on Netflix streaming, these bluray versions just so much better. I'm not a videophile to really describe all the detailed differences but I'll say the motion and clarity of the video just looks far better. It makes the show even more engaging. I feel like I'm noticing more detail in the expressions of the actors. A really cool collectable version of the show, I'm very pleased to own this set. ... show more
