Description

An in-depth look at what it means to be created in the image of God and how our bodies serve as icons that illuminate God's purposes instead of ours. The human body is an amazing gift, yet today, many people downplay its importance and fail to understand what Christianity teaches about our bodies and their God-given purposes. Many people misunderstand how the body was designed, its role in relating to others; and we lack awareness of the dangers of objectifying the body, divorcing it from its intended purpose.Timothy Tennent covers topics like marriage, family, singleness, and friendship, and he looks at how the human body has been objectified in art and media today. For the Body offers a biblical framework for discipling people today in a Christian theology of the body.Tennent—theologian and president of Asbury Theological Seminary—explores the contours of a robust Christian vision of the body, human sexuality, and the variety of different ways we are called into relationships with others. This book will reveal a theological vision that:Informs our self- understanding of our own bodies.Examines how we treat others.Reevaluates how we engage today's controversial and difficult discussions on human sexuality with grace, wisdom, and confidence. For the Body is a call to a deeper understanding of our bodies and an invitation to recapture the wonder of this amazing gift. • Reclaiming a holistic vision of the human person
Dr. Tennent does a wonderful job of translating and interpreting John Paul II's magnificent Theology of the Body. By focusing his exploration on the body itself, Tennent directly addresses one of the most common and devastating wounds people suffer today: a misunderstanding of what it means to be an embodied creature. So much of the harm we see in culture (pornography, trafficking, eating disorders, gender dysphoria, sexual harassments and violence, divorce, abortion etc.) can be directly linked to faulty perceptions we have about the nature of the human person and the meaning and purpose of the body. Moving through the book allows the reader to explore his or her own misperceptions and begin to develop a more holistic understanding and deep appreciation of how God designed us to live. ... show more

  • MUST Read!!
Presents how to live holy without being “holier than thou.” A great reminder that Gnosticism has taken another form in current culture’s perception of God’s Creation. At the same time, realistic ways are presented to help The Church navigate the cultural assault upon holiness unto The Lord without being “preachy.” Will require several thoughtful readings to assimilate. ... show more

  • Well-written and spot-on.
For Christians unfamiliar with the original Theology Of The Body, this book brings it to life for the Protestant reader. It is good for both the lay reader and Pastor/Teachers.

  • A Worthwhile Work for Pastors and Church Leadership
I had originally given this review three stars as it is so desperately needed by the general public who are curious about the Church's view of sexuality and the body, and yet it is hard slog reading due to its wordiness and language. It is not necessarily hard to understand, but it is a difficult read. At times it seems like ideas are presented in a haphazard way by adding headings to their sections. Despite the difficult writing style, the book is long overdue. It is pretty much a primer on what the church has believed (but not practiced) for centuries and the basic theology of marriage as a mystery of Christ and His Church which has gotten lost in the voices of current western culture. The book could be half its size, written in every day language, and still presented with the empathy and care that it evident throughout, and be a masterpiece of the truths presented in scripture on gender, sexuality, and the human body. It's still encouraging to see that Tennent has taken on this project and presented truth for the questions being asked, not so much by our culture, but by Christians who lack a solid biblical understanding of the subject. Pastors especially should make use of the information in this book and then preach, preach, preach the truths presented by using simple language and illustrations. ... show more

  • Very Thankful!
I found this book to be clear and helpful in understanding the greater issue faced by the church. Very thankful for this book. The progressive voice speaks so loud in our society today and we desperately need a clear and understandable traditional voice.

  • Must read for those wrestling with how to approach the myriad of issues we face today
More than winning an argument about same sex marriage and ordination, the book paints a bigger vision of human sexuality and relationships. It provides the big picture of scripture in a clear and compelling way.
