  • like holding the blog in your hands
There have been so many blog-to-book deals over the past several years, but I'm not sure any have been quite as successful in navigating the transition as The Magic of Motherhood from the team behind the collaborative motherhood blog Coffee + Crumbs. For one thing, the book looks and feels like a tangible version of the blog. It's a lovely hardcover, with a ribbon bookmark so you don't even have to dog-ear the pages to save your spot. Accompanying each essay is gorgeous minimalist photographs, just like on the blog. Even the paper it's printed on is great! Truly, this is a book that just looks and feels good to hold. As for the essays themselves, longtime readers of the blog will find a few familiar stories from the authors (April Hoss' Bad Math and N'tima Preusser's When Love Feels Heavy are two), but most of the 33 essays in the book are as fresh as a newborn. And naturally, they are as beautifully written as you'd expect. The ones that hit me right in the gut? Lesley Miller's This Time Around, about expecting her third (and probably last) child, although my feelings are probably heavily influenced by my own pregnancy hormones. I also loved Katie Blackburn's It's Their Day Too, on dealing with the frustrations of a day with small children that doesn't go according to your plan. I don't think there's a mother around who won't find something that resonates in The Magic of Motherhood. Buy 10 copies and make it your go-to baby shower gift. • Modern culture views of motherhood
The book was not for me. It was a very modern view of motherhood and lowered the value of children. I read the whole book but would not recommend.

  • Book of the year!
You know you hold a treasure in your hands when the introduction brings you to tears. Ashlee Gadd and the Coffee & Crumbs writers have captured the complicated, multi-faceted essence of Motherhood in this beautifully bound and photographed book. Motherhood is often an isolating experience, one where survival and uncertainty abound. It’s all too easy to forget that every other mother is also experiencing what you are. In that sense, “The Magic of Motherhood” and Coffee & Crumbs have created a village of sorts, a safe place for mothers to be inspired and encouraged and to offer support to each other. The prose in this book is breathtaking. Each sentence was crafted with care, and the emotion, imagery and metaphor flow off the page and into the heart of the reader. I am forever thankful for the vulnerability of the writers, for their willingness to use their gift to touch other hearts and lives. I laughed and cried the whole way through and will be revisiting each and every essay many times with highlighter and journal in hand. The writers remind us that through it all, every failure and triumph, every fear and joy, it is God who has given us this calling and is carrying us through each challenge. Motherhood is hard behind description, but this book reminds us to lift our eyes to the One who pours out grace upon grace so then we can then model His love and grace to those He has entrusted us with. ... show more

I'm a long-time reader of the Coffee + Crumbs blog, so I was thrilled to see they were coming out with a book. I was not disappointed. One issue I've often had with bloggers that write books is that there is too much repeat material in the book--it feels as though I've read everything already. This was not the case with The Magic of Motherhood. There were a few essays that had previously been published on the blog, but the majority were new, and the ones that were repeated in the book were essays that I love and was grateful to have in print. I've found in my own experience with reading about motherhood that writers are frequently overly sentimental or overly harsh. One of my favorite things about The Magic of Motherhood is that it doesn't shy away from the difficulties that surround motherhood, but it also presents the beauty and joy that come with it. The writers have been incredibly vulnerable in these essays, sharing things that I think most mothers think and feel but don't always share with the world. Reading this book, I felt as if I was not alone and that I was encouraged by a team of women walking the same path. The writing is thoughtful and well crafted--no sloppiness here. The book itself is lovely from an aesthetic standpoint, with beautiful photographs and a ribbon bookmark. I will be purchasing this for many baby showers and Mother's Days in the future! ... show more

  • A collection of stories equally beautiful, uplifting, heartbreaking, encouraging and funny
I found the Coffee and Crumbs blog one night, around 3 a.m., almost 23 months ago. I was wide awake but exhausted – physically, mentally, emotionally – from the amazing highs of life with a newborn. I was overjoyed but also terrified that something would go wrong. In those small hours of the night, when no person should be awake, I discovered a whole new cosmos of the world wide web – parenting advice. How to sleep train by 6 weeks. Why I should co-sleep. Babies need a schedule and discipline. Free range parenting is best. Each new thing I read contradicted another, equally compelling article. I was obsessing over answers to questions I didn’t even know I had. And then I stumbled upon a story. It didn’t tell me how to get my baby to sleep. Or what type of baby food I should make in six months (but not a second before then!) But it helped me more than any advice article could. The Magic of Motherhood is a collection of stories equally beautiful, uplifting, heartbreaking, encouraging and funny. More than that, many of these stories are my story. Or probably will be one day. Or my best friend's story. Or the neighbor down the street. Motherhood truly is magical in its way to connect us. Plus, this hardcover with ribbon placeholder is absolutely dreamy (and small enough to toss in a diaper bag or purse). ... show more
