  • Durable, accurate
I have worked as a broadcast radio engineer for 40+ years. I am also a radio ham operator who builds my own equipment, and a general electronics repair tech. As a cheapskate I never bought expensive metering gear, just deal with cheaper devices and replaced as necessary. After one cheapie crapped out on me in the middle of a project I decided time to treat myself and bought this Fluke. Man, the difference is dramatic! Just picking it up you feel the quality. Easy to read screen, durable, capable, with many features I never had before but know use just because they're so handy. This is a well rounded test device with all the basics and then some. Treat yourself to one of these and you'll never be sorry. ... show more

  • Great meter!
I'm a retired avionics engineer but these days I repair vintage audio components for customers or for resale out of my home shop. This Fluke replaced a cheaper meter that quit measuring capacitance. If I was still working on aircraft systems, this Fluke 115 would still be a reliable test instrument for 90% of needed applications, but it definitely meets or exceeds the needs of an audio technician or engineer. I DO wish it had the capability to measure higher AC/DC voltages than the rated limit of 600V, but I have a need for a high voltage probe anyway. I'll build one and get by for the times that I need to measure voltages in excess of that limit, but it's not a big deal at all. Having said all of that, this is an electronic technician's meter, NOT an electrician's meter. This meter will NOT measure the low microvolts produced by a thermocouple in a HVAC work environment and it does NOT have the capability of making non-contact AC verification as is standard in other Fluke meters that are designed to be more suitable in commercial electrical work. If you're unsure of the correct meter for your application, go to the Fluke website for clarification. Other than that, this is a Fluke tool - built to last and perform perfectly day after day for the work environment that it was designed for. Can't go wrong with a Fluke meter. ... show more

  • The Fantastic Fluke 115 Multi-meter
My last Fluke was over 30 years old and still going strong when it got lost in a move. I wanted to stay with the Fluke brand and went back and forth between the 115 and 177 for some time. Advantages of the 177 are it's made in the USA and has a better warranty and a micro amp port. Some advantages of the 115 are it's substantially cheaper (China made) and more compact and has a better battery compartment. Weighing the above I ended up buying the 115. It arrived in new condition housed in an easy-open plastic cover. My 115 came with an instruction manual and Fluke TL75 test leads. The TL75 leads are adequate but since they're made of plastic they lack the flexibility of silicone. I immediately ordered better quality silicone leads Fluke TL224 paired with TP220 test probes. I have to say I'm pretty happy with this multi-meter. The shape of the 115 is pretty sexy being narrower on the bottom and curving out at the top which makes it a pleasure to hold. It fits my hand like a glove. If I were to fault it for anything it would be the display. If you want the display to be at its darkest you need to be careful with placement. For example, if standing and working at a panel if I hang it around 12 inches above eye level its nice and dark but if placed directly at eye level the display is readable but dimmer. This isn't a deal killer and I would buy again. ... show more

  • Good Meter
Years ago when I was dirt poor and needed a multimeter, I bought one for thirty bucks at an auto parts store because I couldn't afford anything better. It served me well in troubleshooting mostly basic automotive stuff, but it finally gave up the ghost recently when the batteries leaked out their contents and severely corroded the terminals. I cleaned them up and put in new batteries, but the readings were erratic and I couldn't trust them. Since I'm doing better financially now, I decided to get the Fluke. You can tell that the quality is much better right off the hop. Everything just works more smoothly, it's easier to read the LED display, and given what I've seen online showing Fluke's internals, I know I'm getting something that is used reliably by professionals, and that I can myself know for certain that the readings I'm seeing are the actual numbers, not ones I need to be second-guessing. Recently I've branched out into doing higher voltage 110/220V household wiring, so the stakes are quite a bit higher now for my safety. I need something that's not going to fail me in these situations. Not only that, but the old meter I had was giving me fits on an overcharging alternator situation where the voltage was fluctuating at a rhythmic rate. The refresh rate on this pricey meter was the thing that sold me on the idea of getting it at this point in time. I wasn't sure of my readings, and this one didn't sweat the situation at all. I knew exactly what I was looking and and I'm confident in the numbers that I was seeing. I was able to clearly see the alternator overcharging rhythmically and that it was in need of service. Problem solved. Now, why did I knock one star off you ask? It's because of the dial. With a simple tool this expensive, I want something that just works in every way. While I was using this tool for household wiring, I couldn't get it to read even though I was suspicious the wire was hot in spite of the breaker being off on another circuit in the room, and this could have potentially lead to me being electrocuted, because that outlet was indeed hot at the time. Turns out that the dial was between detents and there was no indication of this on the meter. The detents aren't particularly positive, and it was just showing zero when I hooked it to the hot 110 outlet leads. Luckily my spidy sense kicked in and I checked over the meter to make sure it was in good working order before grabbing hold of a hot lead, a little wiggle and she worked just fine. That scared me a little though. I never had that problem with my cheap meter, and again, I need to rely on it in these situations. Now that I know of this problem, I'll work around it to ensure my safety, but come on Fluke. You can do better on those detents, or maybe you could design some firmware that would detect when the dial is between detents and cause it to send up a warning when it's between them and therefore not functioning properly. Very unimpressive here. ... show more
