I have another tool similar to this from a big box store with a molded plastic handle. My wife and I both seem to need it at the same time so I thought I would buy another. The metal blade on this one is heavy duty and the serrations, which are smaller than those on some other models, are nice for cutting through landscaping fabric and will even saw through a small root or limb. It's nice that they include a small sharpening stone for the knife edged part, though as soon as you start digging the blade will become too dull to effectively cut anything. Only issue is with the handle. It was loose right out of the box and after only a couple of uses the little rivets that hold it in place began to work themselves loose requiring tapping on a stone or something to knock them back in. After a while one of the rivets worked itself out and of course I lost it. I will need to employ some glue on the handles or perhaps wrap them with some tape of some sort. Overall the cheaper one with the plastic handle is the winner at half the price. I do not recommend this tool. ... show more

I purchased this hori hori knife after purchasing a different one and not liking how heavy it was. Unfortunately the handle on this is not ergonomic for a woman's hands. I am in my early 60's with a bit of arthritis in both hands and this knife although much lighter and very sturdy was just too difficult to hold onto for any prolonged length of time. ... show more

This is the first Hori Hori I have ever purchased, so I can't compare it to others. However, I will be using this in the garden and will compare it to my garden trowels I have. First of all, this Hori Hori steel is of a much heavier construction. The steel shank goes all the way up into the handle. Most of my hand trowels have broken when I was digging out dirt. This Hori Hori is more like a mini shovel in that respect, and I doubt if I could break it digging dirt in the garden. The "spade" portion of the Hori Hori has both a very sharp straight edge for slicing and the other side is a serrated edge for sawing. The point is also sharpened. If the straight edge becomes dull, I could use the included sharpening stone. The spade portion of the Hori Hori has engraved markings from 1 inch to 6 inches (25-150 mm). Out of the box, the Hori Hori is very sharp. The included sheath appears to be made out of genuine cowhide leather and has heavy stitching. There is a belt loop on the cover which is big enough for my widest working belt. There is also a hole drilled into the top of the handle so you can hang up the Hori Hori in the garage if you want. In the past, I have broken as many as 2 or 3 cheaper garden trowels every year. This Hori Hori is built to last. ... show more

I shopped online a lot for a Hori Hori knife...happy I selected this one. I have large hands (XL gloves), and the handle fits my hands well. Smaller hands might not be as happy. I bought this one because it has finger guards. More traditional Japanese ones don't. But the blade is as wide as the handle, and it would be too easy to hit a rock while digging and have my hand slide down onto the blade. Blade is pretty sharp right out of the box. Sturdy, and the wood handle fits the full tang perfectly. Cons: The sheath is leather, but it is quite thin. I doubt it will last long. The knife needs the small strap closed to stay in the sheath well. The whet stone too small though...a gimmick to throw away or clutter a drawer.. ... show more
