I was quite pleased with this item. If you have something to spread on a small area, whether it is grass seed, some kind of treatment like a fertilizer, or maybe sprinkling a small area with salt in the winter, it would be great. If you're planning on covering a wider area, you may want a larger item, perhaps with a mechanism to help spread the content.     • FUNCTIONS WELL...just maybe a little too small.
It worked very well for spreading grass seed and fertilizer. The only downside for me is that it should be a little bigger. I had to go back and refill too often. Double the size still wouldn't have been too heavy to carry or shake. But then with the extra material, it would be more expensive, so I guess tradeoffs is why this is the way it is. Still, it *does* work well. I'm satisfied with this, prefer it over a push spreader or hand-crank spreader. I didn't notice that much difference in the holes, tho. Seems like you get the spread you need with the velocity you shake/move it, not so much the hole size you set it on. Still, RECOMMENDED product. ... show more

we've already had a little bit of snow and ice hit where I live so I was able to put this to use pretty much immediately and I can confirm this will be a great little addition to your winter prep. it's very easy to spread the salt and to dig it out of the bag. I ordered this because I'm planning to reseed my lawn next spring, and I don't have space to store a conventional lawn seed and fertilizer spreader. This simple little hand spreader is just perfect for what I need! It holds a decent amount in the cup without getting too heavy to hold in one hand. There are four different settings for controlling how quickly you want the seeds to come out. But I just discovered another great use in this cold snow season. The Flora Guard hand spreader shaker is exactly what I was looking for in order to spread ice & snow melt throughout the coming winter months. I needed to seed some freshly bare dirt and the FLORA GUARD Hand Spreader Shaker made it much easier than donig it by hand. It also spread the seeds far more evenly than I could have. While it is not perfect it does a fine job and a much lower price than the mechanical seed spreaders. I will say this is better for a small job than a field. ... show more

    • Great for ALL seasons!
This is such a handy garden tool!! I got this to help distribute snow melt on my sidewalks for winter. It's got a wide mouth so it's easy to fill and has four different size openings for distributing whatever you fill it with. I can see myself using this for more than just snow melt in the winter! It will be great for sprinkling rabbit repellent around certain plants as well as spreading Preen in the flowerbeds and fertilizer in small areas. Perhaps another one to be used for only feeding the pond fish or refilling the bird feeders! ... show more

    • This thing is a game changer
We have always used an old cup to shake out salt in the winter. This is so easy to fill and spread the salt without issue. I will be purchasing another for my kids to use during winter.
