  • Spindle nut effectively heated & removed..
Style: Advance Torch Max
This torch tip did the job in concert with the MAPP fuel cylinder it was mounted on. I had unsuccessfully tried to heat and remove a difficult spindle nut with my 25 year old Bernz-O-Matic propane torch kit. The Flame King torch tip was more convenient due to the electronic igniter and the flame didn't change as I rotated the torch to evenly heat the spindle nut. The torch is heavy duty in its construction and performed as expected in every way. Only reason I gave 4-stars is that the retaining collars on the torch were shipped with loose set screws. Once I snugged them with a standard metric hex key the unit was ready to go. ... show more

  • 8,500 BTUs OF BLUE, SCORCHING FIRE
Style: Advance Torch Max
I’ve been stumped about how to tell the BTUs of a propane torch. Torch manufacturers don’t seem to want to list BTUs in their specs. This Flameking is my third attempt at buying a propane torch that can sear my gray, utterly unappetizing sous vide steaks. The first two didn’t even come close to the blistering heat I needed to put a crust on my steaks. Enter Flameking. Whoa. This is a whole new ball game. This thing is a flame thrower. First off, the Flameking FK8500CGA is 8,500 BTUs. The BTUs are listed right there in the item model number. But I knew this torch would be different, even before knows its BTUs. For one thing, it weighs a ton more than the other two torches I tried. It looks and feels like a torch I could weld my copper plumbing pipes with. Forget lighting grills and wood-work. Those things, this torch can do on “low-near-off.” This torch merits respect. I gave it respect while searing my two steaks. I must admit, I was a tad afraid of it. There are three control buttons/dials. There’s a “trigger start,” which is apparently the same thing as “instant on/off ignition.” There’s a “flame lock.” There’s an “adjustable flame knob.” All I could think of is that I didn’t have three arms. But once you connect the torch to the propane tank and use the flame knob to let the gas out of the tank, your instincts take over. You just push the trigger ignition, and you’ve got blue fire. If you let go of the trigger ignition, the fire goes out. Which is why there’s a “flame lock,” so you don’t have to hold the trigger to sear, to solder, to flame-throw! ... show more

  • Better for high heat
Style: Deluxe Performance Torch
I wanted a trigger spark to replace my old non-sparked torch. I found this torch favored a big flame over a small one. I also found the spark a little finicky. It did not always ignite the flame. Once the flame got going it was easier to stop and restart the flame. I will keep my old torch for fine work with a small flame and use this one for bigger jobs. ... show more

  • Works in any position, great quality
Style: Advance Performance Torch
Weighing just north of one pound, this torch head has a great feel to it. Good quality. Super easy to use - rotate the trigger to unlock it, squeeze the trigger to start the gas flow and ignite the torch. This model, the FK4500CGA, specifically is called out in the instructions as not having a ‘flame adjustment knob’. Partially releasing the trigger does have the effect of reducing the flame, but if you use the flame lock button then you are going to be getting the full deal. I’ve used my old Craftsman (likely Bernz-O-Matic) torch head and an oxy-acetylene sparker since the 1980’s, and have sweated more joints than I care to remember. I know I’m late to the party, but this self-igniting torch is a game changer. It is so easy to only have the torch lit when you are using it. The other thing I noticed is the difference in flame sizes, flame shape, and the sound of the torch. This torch has a broader and larger flame, and is quite a bit louder than the old torch. As advertised, this torch works just as well when you point the torch down. Can’t do that with my old torch, and all-position flame is helpful when you’re sweating in stops under a sink. 5 stars for a quality torch you’ll be glad to own. ... show more

  • Works - No Major Issues
Style: Advance Torch Max
I use MAP gas and have a Bernzomatic torch head. It's been a good torch, never giving me a problem. But I'm always worried that it might fail one day on a job, and I don't have any backup. So, I decided to order this torch. It's essentially the same design as the Bernzomatic torch. I used it a few times, just to see how it would work and it worked okay. Where the Bernzomatic torch will light the first time, every time, the Flame King would sometimes fail to light and I'd have to push the ignition button again. That's the only reason I knocked off one star. The Bernzomatic torch head is a bit more expensive than this torch, and I'd probably choose the spend the additional money and get that head. It works and will give me a backup function in case my main torch ever fails on a job. ... show more

  • Love the lighter
Style: Deluxe Performance Torch
I got this to replace a very old torch head. The old one was your the simple open/closed valve type. You have to light it with a lighter. This new one has the starter built in. It lights with one click. I love it. You can lock the torch on or keep it as a quick release for simply lighting something. This particular model doesn’t let you adjust the flame, so that is a drawback, but other than that I like it. ... show more

  • Flame nothing like picture
Style: Advance Torch Max
I expected the flame to be like picture, pinpoint flame well it's nothing like that not any better then my 30 year old one that I thought was going to be an upgrade, but my mistake.

  • Seems to work OK
Style: Advance Torch Max
One thing that surprised me was the similarity between my old Bernzomatic TS8000 and this torch. They operate identically and look very similar. Both brands are made in China. Both torches work inverted which is a must for me. The price point for both were about the same. My old torch lasted 7 months before the igniter failed and I had to start using a torch lighter to get mine going. So, the jury is still out on this Flame King torch, but I am hoping that the self-igniter mechanism will hold up better. ... show more
