  • Well built, works well except for frustrating cable control of open/close gate.
Size: pack of 1
Here is my current assessment of the Field Tuff AS-125ATV12 Receiver Mount Spreader, 125-Pound: Pros: The spreader is well built, assembly instructions are straight forward, the unit worked very well right out of the box. Spreads the 12 foot width as claimed. Cons: Can’t control width of spread or speed of fly wheel, cable that opens/closes the discharge gate is relatively worthless when the hopper is full (you can open, but it won’t close...this is a classic issue with this type control and the manufacturer that “fixes” this issue will out sell everyone else, all things considered equal!), the ads say 125lb capacity while the included literature says 80lbs. Modifications: I made a bracket so that I could attach the controls on the roll bar of my Kubota ZD21F Diesel Zero Turn Mower. Due to the “open/close” cable on the discharge gate being basically useless, I have modified the gate by attaching a 12volt actuator that has a 2” travel distance. It is controlled by a switch I installed next to the on/off switch (I removed the cable controller). I’m working on an indicator that would allow me to see how far the gate is open while sitting in the driver’s seat. I’m also working on sliding sides that would extend from the current guard around the fly wheel to further restrict the width of the spread on one or both sides thrown from the flywheel. These modifications would add cost to the product, but I bet if offered as an option there would be a lot of takers. ... show more

  • works great after modifications

Let me start by saying.... I work in the trades......... and It was obvious to me how everything went together using the directions. So putting this together was a snap for me. But I do see the directions being challenging for others as they use an exploded view print to aid in assembly and most find that hard to use along with the hardware being metric. First recommendation is to change out the hardware to US stainless steel other than the u bolt hardware..........It's been my experience if you ever want to disassemble this in the future using stainless steel hardware with never seez will make it easy. First complaint the gate that slides to allow the control of material dropping onto the rotor below does not close tight, it has a very sloppy movement to it. I modified the cable by bolting the wire to the moving plate, now the movement has a precise control to it and has a positive close position. Second complaint the stock used to make the 2" and 1 1/4" adapter to mount in a receiver is undersized and makes for a sloppy fit ......so much so the hopper wobbles from side to side when traveling with it mounted in my 1 1/4" receiver on my JD X500. I used a ratchet strap to stabilize and help offset the stress on the receiver because of the extreme extended angle the hopper is set at. I normally use only one 40lb bag of fertilizer at a time in the hopper. With 40 lbs at a time in the hopper I found the motor works effortlessly with that amount, however there is about 4 or 5 handfuls of material left in the hopper that will not move into the gate to be spread due to the flat bottom design of the hopper. The deflector and rotor work good at controlling the throw pattern...... it has about a 12' wide spread and mind you it sits higher than a pull behind spreader so you have to adjust how close you are to the edge when spreading. I GAVE THREE STARS but only after my upgrades..........if it was as delivered I would give one star as it would be very frustrating and inconsistent in operation. The only thing I see now is the long term operation of the 12v motor, I will try and come back with a long term update on the performance. I put the controls by my hand for easy operation, it comes with a long electrical wiring harness and the cable for the gate control allows for remote operation other than mounting controls on hopper as directed which is why I was drawn to this unit. It is so easy now with no more jumping out to open or close the gate so you don't leave a pile of material in one spot. This was $300 less than Big Green's model and this is replacing Big Green's top of the line pull behind 175 lb spreader that had to be repaired 3 years out and failed 5 years out from purchased date. Update …4 / 2015……..it states it’s for fertilizer and seed and it did work fine spreading them , I tried this spring to use pelletized lime and the motor would not even turn. So beware ... show more

  • I recommend this spreader
Size: pack of 1
First I would recommend this unt it’s l nicely made and easy to operate. It took about 1 and halfback hrs to build and attach to my cub cadet XT2 42 ( just lye all parts out on the floor, then read band understand what you need to do to assembly the spreader and the entire assembly and test results will go well Will with no issues also others complaint where Electrical connection are not staying connected, I cut down the motor power lead to a foot ( you don’t need 4 ft of wire snd soldered in male / female automotive connectors and heat shrink to protect from water and d dirt and secured to control bracket.... they recommend a trailer hitch ( DO NOT USE THE ONE THEY RECOMMEND ITS NOT STABLE AND MOVES LEFT RIGHT INSTEAD USE The CURT 45006 Bolt-On 2-Inch ATV, UTV Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter IT UTILIZES a TWO BOLTS TO LOCK plate system that secures it in PLACE watch the Curtis video to understand the issue with the other brands..., I’ve used it twice and it does a great job fanning fertilizer and grass seed but just practice and find the perfect drop rate that works right for that application. perform test spreads to learn about the drop and finding the right placement for the shutter door opening snd works great remember this is an electric motor that is spinning to force the material to drop no wheels spinning to cause the dropping of material. When you stop it’s still dropping , you have to turn to drop door,,, See photos to understand the upgrades I made good luck ... show more
