Prevent string buzz on your bass guitar with a genuine, easy-to-install Fender Stealth Bass String Retainer. • Not A miracle cure
A few years back, I called Fender to see if they would sell me one of these since it appeared to be a part on some of their products. They told me at that time...no. So I was very happy to see that this part is now available. I bought three for my three precisions. After installing the first one, I have determined that the design is somewhat flawed. For starters, the A string still buzzes albeit possibly somewhat less than before. It still buzzes though. The design on this would be better if it fit over the E string machine and extended out to the A. At that point, you could just get a real string retainer and mount it between the A and the D. FWIW, it did seem like the A string had less floppiness than before though, but of course this could be placebo as I rationalize the price I paid for these parts. Luckily, I have never been at a gig where I even noticed the A string buzzing when attacked firmly. ... show more

  • A Requirement for 5-String Basses
I can't imagine constructing a 5-string bass without installing one of these for the low B. It's a no-brainer. But I docked it one star for the price: twenty-two bucks for this small piece of metal?

  • Nessary piece for American P bass.
YES!!! I don't know why every American Precision bass just doesn't leave Fender with one of these installed. It is for the "A" sting, which is not under the "T", but if the string is not properly wrapped 3 times, mine came 2 wraps, it can have an annoying buzz. Nice 19mm or 3/4 thin open end wrench is what you need. Remove string from tuner first. Careful, snug it up properly. I experimented with just where to set it, until I got it to work properly. Though seriously, any bass close to 1500 clams you shouldn't have to do this yourself. If the headstock was angled back better, you would most likely not need this. I suppose its all about getting more necks out of a Maple Tree... The rest of the bass is, just AWESOME!!! ... show more

  • Not for Mexican Fenders, I repeat, NOT FOR MEXICO!!!
It should be made very clear and upfront, that this piece is only made to fit certain basses. I say again, "THIS STRING RETAINER WILL NOT WORK WITH ALL FENDER BASSES". I think that must be what the stealthy part of the title refers to, the fact that if you look hard enough after you've already given Fender your money of course, you will then discover that to make this work with your bass, the correct after-market tuning machines/pegs are $100. Also, I tried to make it work anyways, and after trying different glues and tapes, sandpaper, and various other fruitless attempts, I realized, "DO NOT TRY TO MAKE IT FIT!!!" I am now out of the money wasted on this stupid piece, and the neck of my bass looks like crap now. The entire purchase, the piece, the monkeying around, was just a stupid waste of money and time. Shame on FENDER. Disgusting... ... show more

  • Fixes "A" String Rattle BUT!!!
It fixed the "A" string rattle on my Jazz Bass. Buy this. QUESTON: Why do I have to pay a little over $20 dollars for a part that Fender should have on their over $1000 guitar. FENDER SHOULD GIVE THESE AWAY FOR FREE!!! They clearly know there's a string rattle or they wouldn't have invented these. It should be on the bass when you by it. And that's why I gave it four stars and not five. Fenders all about the money. ... show more

  • Should be standard on all Fenders
This is so good to diminish string noise and should come standard. Only works with new style tuners though, no vintage because it requires the screw threads to keep it on...see American Standard style tuners.

  • Functional and nicely made
This is for the USA made basses ... attaches on the post above the A string and you bring the hex nut down on top to secure it. This drops the angle a little for the A string, behind the nut, for more stability and no open A buzz (rare for me).

  • It fits my AmPro P-Bass
It helped with the open A string fret rattle on my P-Bass. This is a decent alternative if you don't want to drill holes in the peg head for a second string tree.
