  • The Precision pickups I have been searching for
I've been on quite a journey with Precision Bass pickups. What I've learned is that the natural character and voicing of your bass will have a huge impact on whether or not any given P pickup works. My ash Precision has a really aggressive upper mid thing going on. After seven or so pickup sets over two decades, I think the PV 63's may be the best balanced with my bass' baked-in sound. One mistake that I made over and over was trying to find a pickup that would soften or attenuate the aggressive frequencies. Ultimately, the Fender PV 63 worked best because it kicked up the bass and lower mids so that they could compete with its top-en snap rather than scooping anything out. It's the best my Precision has sounded since I bought it 20yrs ago -- balanced but still ballsy. Obviously, your mileage may vary. Unless you have an inherently dark bass with a lot of booty already on tap, these are worth a look. They are easily my favorite Precision pickups, and I've tried quite a few. I've tried them with Fender flats, Nickel Lo-Riders, and GHS pressurewounds. It has sounded phenomenal with each. As a matter of practice, I try out a few wiring harnesses with any new P pickup using gator clips and button crimps before soldering. The PV63's seemed to favor an AVRI '57 style harness with 250k audio pots and a 0.068uf cap, but that's just my personal taste. ... show more

  • Saved my 2011 Highway One P Bass. Great tone.
I’m not a professional. I’ve got a a 2011 60th Anniversary Highway One P bass that came with a BadAss II bridge and grease bucket wiring. The E and A strings were always anemic, while the D and G strings really popped. I tried different strings, and adjusted the pickup and string height. The bass was always powerful in the mid and treble, while the E and A strings sounded hollow. The Highway One is a comfortable, light weight American bass with a great neck. I googled “thin” and “weak sounding” Highway One P Bass and found multiple results for the later model that came with a BadAss II bridge. Some people said the BadAss bridge was the culprit. I installed a vintage Fender bridge. This didn’t fix the tone for me, but I prefer the vintage bridge to the BAII. Others mentioned the pickups are the culprit.. I chose this model of pickup because it had good reviews and was in stock with prime shipping. Voila, this is exactly what I had in mind. With the .1uf capacitor, you can get old school tones with roundwounds by dialing down the tone knob. All of the strings are now even in volume and the E and A sound fantastic, as does the D and G. I was considering selling this bass, but now it’s a keeper. FYI the instructions call for a .1uf capacitor. ... show more

  • A great upgrade!
When I bought my 1975 Oly White P Bass someone had replaced the pups with some Seymour Duncan's. Didn't care for the sound so I bought these and had a buddy of mine put them in. Nice, deep, smooth tone with flats like a good P should be. Highly recommend for a great upgrade!

  • The classic Precision Bass sound
First, I have no idea why I have been asked to star-rate this pickup for 'thickness'. Thickness of sound? I bought this pickup to replace the standard pickup in my Fender MIM Mustang bass. My hands are too small for a full-size bass so I play a short scale bass which has that characteristic 'hollow' sound. This pickup counteracts the hollowness and gives me the closest sound I'm going to get to a classic Fender Precision. It records beautifully and really makes the bass sit well in a mix. ... show more

  • Just what I expected
Installed this pickup in an old Precision bass that the prior owner had put an EMG active pickup in. I never completely liked that sound. It was sterile and generic sounding. The Fender Pure Vintage 63 has much more attitude and character. Also the volume of the notes played from position to position on the neck is also more even--nothing jumps out or drops. Previously with the EMG, I thought there were dead spots on the neck! Thankfully it was just the old pickup! ... show more

  • THE Pbass SOUND!
Jaw dropping sound from these pickups. I replaced my 2002 MIM pickups for these and WOW! The exact tone I was seeking. "Pure Vintage" yet extremely articulate. Sits in a mix like a dream. 100% satisfaction.

  • Awesome pickups
These replaced pure vintage 58 pickups. The 63s are a direct replacement and include the metal plate under the pickups. The sound is fantastic and I am so glad I bought these.

  • Meh
Spend the extra $30 and get the Custom Shop 62 instead. Way better extension and dynamics.
