After years using a cheap Hario aluminum stovetop kettle (which poured sloppily and got grungy very quickly between cleanings) and then a disastrous "Wirecutter top pick" Tsukito Slim Kettle (tall, but uninsulated handle--requiring a potholder or oven mitt--and loose lid made lifting & pouring a nightmare), I went looking for a kettle that combined the stay-cool handle of the Hario and the more vertical spout angle and slimmer tip of the Tsukito. Browsed through the review star-counts and photos, and came across the electric version of the Fellow Stagg. I already have a large OXO cordless electric, so I scrolled down to see if Fellow offered a stovetop version. This has every feature I want in a stoveop kettle for pourover coffee (yes, it's a "uni-tasker," but I don't share Alton Brown's disdain for those): a stay-cool handle, more vertical spout with a narrow tip for precision pours, and a lid that stays in place. It's a beautiful stainless steel, too--as bright and shiny after nearly a month of daily use. Every bit as design-edgy as an Alessi. But the bonus is the thermometer integrated into the lid, complete with red markings on the dial indicating the optimal pouring temperature. I can also tell when it's hot enough to pre-moisten the paper filter and preheat my cup (I brew into & drink from an Ember mug). As a result, I know exactly when to begin my pour and achieve a perfectly precise spiral. Yes, it's pricier than the Hario (and as costly as the Tsukito), but it does exactly what it was designed for and looks absolutely gorgeous sitting out there on my stove. As a result, my second cup of the day is not a K-cup or espresso, but another delicious pourover. It turns a morning chore into a pleasant ritual. Maybe I'm persnickety, but if you pour a little fast the water will come out the lid. Perhaps I'm just very impatient and need to slow down 🤔 This is gorgeous and it has become a staple for my morning pour overs.

I desperately wanted this kettle just because it's so beautiful. And for looks, it gets a 10--or I guess 5 stars on amazon. The reason I'm only giving it 4 stars right now is because I'm still not sure if I'm going to keep it because of 2 design flaws: -See that silver ring around the handle? It gets HOT. And since the other part of the handle is relatively short, it is very easy to burn your hand. I think someone else mentioned this too. Seems like even 1/4" longer would have solved it. -Flaw #2: The top does not attach to the kettle. The instructions advise you to hold onto the top when you pour out the water, which is a little annoying. (Remember, we're talking about spending $85 to boil water. At that price point, it really ought to be perfect.) I actually forgot about this when I poured, and the top didn't come off, but I can see how it might. But having said all that: it works perfectly. It pours beautifully--I use an Aeropress and these gooseneck kettles are supposed to be for pourover coffee, but it's the same concept IMHO and it works great. The temperature gauge is easy to read (the proper range is marked in red). It doesn't whistle, so you do have to watch it. But of course the real pleasure is in looking at it on your stove, or next to your coffee beans and grinder and frother and what have you. The shape is so elegant and the matte finish is really gorgeous. I'll update this review in a month. ... show more

I felt a strong urge to correct some of the negative reviews complaining about the handle melting when heating this kettle on a gas range, claims which I find unfair to the manufacturer and quite frankly angering. These are the people who do not comprehend the relationship between plastic and fire. As with any other type of plastic, if you burn the handle of this kettle with a live flame, it will melt. If you do not burn the handle of this kettle with a live flame, it will not melt. See the attached picture for the appropriate size of the burner to put your kettle on. See how the handle isn't melting? This is because it is NOT IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH A LIVE FLAME. Most people who know how to use a stove understand this concept. If you are in doubt about the size or power of your burner, do what I did: The first time you use the Stagg, put it on the appropriate burner and hold your hand underneath the handle to feel whether it is too hot. I did this a few times throughout the first boil and had no problems whatsoever. Thus far, I am extremely satisfied with this kettle, which not only looks amazing, but offers excellent flow restriction and very fine control when pouring. It is a beautiful gem in my morning ritual, which has been considerably enhanced since receiving the Stagg. It is designed for pour-over coffee brewing, and works perfectly for this purpose. It is virtually impossible to pour too quickly with it, it is comfortable to hold, and the thermometer is sooo handy! The little brewing range indicator soothes my obsessive heart. As some other reviews point out, a little steam gets into the thermometer gauge at around boiling temperature, but who cares? It goes out as soon as the boiling stops. If you're an adult, this is a non-issue. Equally a non-issue is the short metal part of the handle which people complain about burning themselves on. This is an engineering compromise: If you don't want the handle to melt up top, you have to protect the plastic from the heat of the vessel itself. Sure, they could get around this. Or you could just slightly move your thumb, mama's boy. The construction seems sturdy, and I am particularly impressed with the solid joining of the gooseneck to the vessel itself, and the thickness of the gooseneck. This said, I have only had it for a few weeks and thus cannot say anything for long-term durability. The plastic of the handle is perhaps the one thing they could improve, as it feels a bit cheap for a 70-dollar kettle. But it's totally worth it, just get the damn thing. The fact that the thermometer is removable is great since I can use it for my tea kettle or other things. You could also put some other thermometer in there if you have one you prefer. If you're considering other kettles for pour-over brewing but like the design of this one, do yourself a favor and get the Stagg. ... show more
