This piece is sturdy and has room for everything if you're a sensible packer. Considered a "personal item" airlines don't charge for it. My husband and I both carry one, and spent a long weekend at the Venetian in Vegas without a problem using only these.

As far as the functionality of this bag, it is fantastic. It has so many pockets, and places to organize my things, comfortable straps, and large capacity. My only gripe with this bag is the outer fabric. Unfortunately, while it repels water, it does not repel stains very well. I figured it would wipe clean, but unfortunately not. I truly love this backpack. I am a frequent flyer and I fly lots of different airlines. Whenever I fly budget airlines such as Frontier, this is my go-to bag. It always fits everything I need and it has never been an issue for Frontier. When they have me check it in the personal item slot, it fits perfectly. Even if I overstuff it a little bit, I can push it down with ease. It is possible to overstuff to where you may need to force it down which some employees may have an issue with that, so be careful. However, I have never had an issue. I love that it can tighten and compress around the sides and I like all the zippers and pockets for easy access. Zippers smooth, seams held up, color as pictured. Carried small laptop, tablet and everything else I could stuff in it for 5-hour flight. Especially liked the simple rubbery port built-in to feed your own USB cable to your own battery charger stowed on the inside. Others that have a built-in USB "jack" seemed unlikely to support fast charging, and more susceptible to damage. Was able to use the straps and buckles to cinch small enough to fit under airline seat.
