Description

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: LB stands for Luria Broth, a nutritionally rich medium, which is one of the most common media used in the laboratories worldwide. LB medium is recommended safe for student use, whereas Tryptic Soy Agar medium is NOT suitable for student use due to its ability to amplify blood-born pathogenic bacteria. KIT CONTENT: 1) 10x Pre-poured sterile LB-agar plates (100 x 15 mm Petri Dish) 2) 10x 6-inch sterile cotton swabs (2 per pouch)3) Detailed Instruction4) Free Science Fair Project E-BookLB agar plates should be placed in a refrigerator upon arrival. LB-agar plates stored under such conditions have a minimum shelf life of 3 months. BRIEF INSTRUCTION: 1) Take out one sterile cotton swab. Gently wipe a test area with the cotton swab to pick up bacteria. Here are some of the popular samples of the test objects: human or pet teeth, hands, phone, TV remote, restaurant menu, sink, floor, fruit, vegetable etc. 2) Take out one of the agar plates (No warm-up is needed). Open the agar plate and gently streak the agar plate with the cotton swab to transfer the bacteria onto the surface of the agar plate. 3) Cover the agar plate and place it in an upside-down position in an incubator with a temperature between 85 and 100 oF. A desk lamp or a portable heater can be used as a heat source. 4) Watch appearance of small bacterial colonies on the surface of the agar plates after 12-48 hr of incubation. • Nothing happened...
I bought this for use with my students. We swabbed several areas of our school, phones, shoes, and hands. I left the petri dishes in the incubator and nothing grew. I suspect that the agar was dried out when I got it. I'm pretty irritated to have wasted so much money on something that was such a disappointment to my students. ... show more

This was a wonderful set. It came with 10 Luria Broth agar plates, 10 single sided cotton swabs and wonderful step by step instructions. The packaging of the the items was wonderful and they all arrived without any cracks or chips, with the agar in tact. My daughter and I decided to swab 10 random things around our house to see what was living on them for a school science experiment. Since most of the surfaces were dry, we added just a little bottled water to the end of the swab. We carefully labelled each plate and started swabbing. After swiping the cotton swabs onto the agar plates, we stacked them back into the box they came in and sealed them. We did not have an incubator, so we decided to put the box in our garage. We live in Arizona, so the garage is still nice and warm this time of year. We checked the plates after 3 days and saw plenty of growth, but decided to put it away for another few days. We were not disappointed in our results, although we are unsure how we are still alive! I cannot believe the variety of bacteria and fungus that can live in such a small area. It made me want to Lysol my whole house :) I wish there was a good way to identify what was growing, but I know that involves a lot more steps, extra materials and a whole lot of know how that I do not have. My daughter was quite content just to look at the specimens through our microscope and we were able to get some very cool photos through the plastic lid. The micro world we can barely see is absolutely amazing to look at! I have attached a few of the photos below. If anyone sees the photos and identifies anything that could potentially kill us, please leave a comment below :P ... show more

  • Awesome product
Awesome product. My son scored a 91 in his science project. He did an experiment to compare the effectiveness of hand sanitizers. He collected bacteria samples from contaminated food. He then touched the bacteria and rubbed on the petri dish. After washing his hands He did touch the contaminant again, washed with dove soap, rubbed on petri dish. He repeated this process with various hand sanitizers he compared. And he found that purell is the best because it has more alcohol content in it. ... show more

  • Works perfectly for my purpose, testing UVC LED
I purchased this to test two UV-C boxes that I bought. How do I know if the two boxes work?! I read some people using green banana to test for genuine UV-C, that didn’t work for me, banana didn’t turn brown. Does that mean I got received fake UV-C LED boxes?? I decided to do my own scientific test by buying this product. I swabbed the interior of the toilet and put in two dishes. First dish is “O” and second dish is “N.” I bought the two boxes at different times from different sellers and the two boxes when lite are different colors (one more purple than other). I suspected the one that is more purple is the fake, boy was I right, they’re both genuine UV-C LED. They’re both supposed to be 256nm UV-C LED. As you can see from my dishes, C is for control, 2,3,4 is the exposure time. Both dishes still have bacteria after two minutes, but not as much as control. At three and four minutes, most bacteria are all gone. I’m glad I was able to do my own scientific test to see the efficacy of my two LED UV-C boxes. As it turns out, the box that is more purple is more effective. Both boxes didn’t didn’t produce O3 as well, I don’t want O3 in my house. ... show more

  • I created a germ unit to teach my 3rd graders ...
I created a germ unit to teach my 3rd graders. They get to choose places to find germs throughout the school. I've done this two years now and these plates work really well for growing bacteria and viruses. I just place them all flat in a giant plastic ziplock bag and set them out on the counter. Kids can check on them frequently. My classroom temperature ranges between 65° unoccupied to 75° before ac kicks on. Have not needed to add heat for growth. I found several books on the top on Amazon and a Bill Nye video. Really gets kids to think about washing their hands correctly before they eat! ... show more

  • Great product, but grows cultures very easily.
Great agar plates and arrived in perfect condition. However, when you swab them with cultures, they grow copious quantities of microorganisms. Beware! You might feel like Dr. Frankenstein, and the stench is reminiscent of a freshly cracked open casket made of old gym socks that was buried under a chicken coop. This item should come with one of those hanging pine tree air fresheners, or perhaps twelve. ... show more

  • Worked well, great customer service
I was weary about the quality of these agar plates due to a number of bad reviews. We needed the plates quickly. These were the best option for delivery speed and price so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, there was a winter storm and the shipment was delayed but the shipper wasn’t showing much information so I tried calling the company. I could not get anyone on the phone and there was no voicemail. I proceeded to email customer support and received a quick response from Dr. Huang. When the plates arrived, they did not meet the quality criteria described in their package insert. I followed the insert’s instructions, took pictures of the plates and emailed them to customer support (and Dr. Huang). He quickly replied and shipped replacement plates that day which arrived rapidly and in perfect condition. My son was able to complete all of his PRSEF science competition experiments without any problems. The plates were fresh, sterile and well made. If you receive plates that do not meet quality standards email them right away. I was very satisfied with Dr. Huang’s prompt and caring communications and management of the situation. I would recommend these agar plates! ... show more
