  • Serious flaws after the one year mark, read before you buy.
Pattern Name: 1 Dog System Size: 500' PRO GRADE FENCE
TL;DR "Be very very very gentle when tightening the casing after inserting batteries into the unit. Again, the plastic is extremely weak and any cracks will essentially guarantee the death of your expensive device. Despite the device being waterproof, it cracks very easily, and once cracked moisture will seep in and kill this unit. Warranty is limited, after 1 year, expect to pay a minimum of $75 for a receiver replacement. Full Summary: I've owned this product for a little over a year and I'll be explaining what I like about it, but more importantly, some of its downfalls and what you can/should do to make the most of this product if you absolutely have to buy it. I will say from experience, the majority of the package works as intended. That being the digital transmitter, which you have to keep inside or get a weather box, the boundary wires, and the twisted wire (which I have not used, mind you), but I assume it will work well as it seems to be made of good quality. Just an FYI, the warranty does not cover the wires, so I am thankful I have not had any issues with the black boundary wire yet. Where this product starts to show it's weakness is in the "Waterproof Active collar. Honestly, all the pitfalls really stem from here. Let's start off by listing some of its features, it is listed to be submersible to 10 feet; however, I would not test this due to some build quality issues, and warranty issues I'll get to later on. They do come with a set of rubber comfort covers that are included for comfort, but they do wear pretty fast and you have to replace them. I highly recommend the comfort covers, as I initially put them on my dog without them and he started to get a nasty burn on his neck. The same happened with my other dog, so I know this was not an isolated incident. It's true, the collar/receiver is very light and is listed to weight only 1.1 Ounce, it almost feels hollow. It takes a proprietary 6v battery, which is listed to last around 4 months if your dog knows not to get close to the boundary. Let's quickly go over that again. • Proprietary battery • Not really optional covers • "waterproof" here is where we get to the biggest problem of all. The blue plastic casing of this receiver is very cheaply made As many others have pointed out in the reviews, it will crack. It is not a matter of if, but when it cracks. Remember, even if you bought the version with a 10 year warranty, it is a limited warranty. This means if the product cracks due to a defect you can get a free exchange within the 1st year. After the 1st year, you still have to pay a whopping $75 out of pocket. I feel like the description should mention that, or their website at least, it feels a little misleading… When not if, the casing starts to crack it will no longer be waterproof. Rust can and will get inside and stop the product from working. I live in Southern California and it has only rained I want to say a maximum of 5 times where I have lived within the last year, yet this product only started to malfunction a month or so ago. So I am guessing normal moisture in the morning damaged the product from inside once the product cracked. They really push the waterproof feature, so they want you to get it wet, which will most likely hurt the unit once it is cracked (inevitable, especially after a year). You may by now have realized the overall problem with this receiver… it is meant a perpetual money sink after you have bought the original product, like buying ink for a printer. Only in this case you are paying such a high premium for the product… you shouldn't have to continue to sink more money, but you do. The collar is built to break and if you get it replaced before the warranty.. (use that information as you please). Then they still expect you to spend $$$ on the proprietary battery and the not so optional rubber covers. Unfortunately, most of these good reviews are most likely within the first year where no issues occur and if they do, they get a replacement free of charge, which sadly does not paint an accurate picture of the real cost of this product over the long run, regardless of what type of warranty you have with it. Lucky, If you already bought the product or you're in a niche situation like me where this product is a necessary evil, here are some solutions I have found that can help you circumvent some of these issues. #1 You do not need to buy proprietary batteries. You can search the comments or do your own research, I wouldn't want this review to be taken down for recommending another product. In short, you can stack the generic version, tape em up, and put them in the receiver and they work splendidly. Sure they may last slightly less time than the proprietary one, but they are a fraction of the cost and are still marginally more bang for your buck, seriously. #2After training most dogs eventually learn to stay away from the wire just by hearing the noise, Which means you don't need to replace the black soft covers on the prongs after they stop conducting, as the sound itself will keep your dog away. You can just loosen the collar as well. Amazon actually sells some aftermarket tips in packs at almost half the price of a single one if you were to buy direct from these guys. #3 Be very very very gentle when tightening the casing after inserting batteries into the unit. Again, the plastic is extremely weak and any cracks will essentially guarantee the death of your expensive device. You may even want to put a thin strip of tape around the casing to further protect it from water/environment. It's quite easy to remove with scissors and it's only someone you will have to do every few months. Bonus for #3 This receiver is confirmed to receive the following frequencies 7khz & 4 kHz, which means you may be able to use an aftermarket receiver as a backup or replacement. Amazon does over free returns so you can just test a variety of them out, and if they don't work you can return them free of charge. This is a must if you are over your 1-year warranty. I am currently looking into this. Summary: Would have been a solid A+ product; however, the weakest link brings it all down. The collar/receiver, it's a huge money sink, and the 10-year limited warranty is a joke and borderline false advertising, mind you the only thing it really covers after a year is the Digital Transmitter and receiver, and again you will be paying a minimum of 75$ for the receiver with this limited "warranty." I have no idea how much you would have to pay for the Digital transmitter, as it is not sold individually, and can only be obtained with one of the packs/kits. So who knows how much they will have you pay for it under your "warranty." Update: instead of the 1-2 days replacement came on about a week later. No collar included, just the transmitter. You also have to pay out of pocket to return ship back the transmitter. They still have not included an invoice. ... show more

  • Quality product. Very pleased with purchase so far!
Pattern Name: 1 Dog System Size: 1000' PRO GRADE FENCE
I'm one to research the heck out of things, and I narrowed my wired dog fence system down to two and chose this. Two weeks later I couldn't be more pleased. I wanted smallest collar unit to be least cumbersome to my dog, yet durable and most features and level of settings. I went with pro grade option and 1,000' of cable. Was surprised when that came on just one spool- great, no splice needed in middle of run! Also it doesn't say it, but it *does* come with a surge protector, which otherwise costs about $25. I rented EZ Trencher to lay cable but that was tough in soggy lawn- kept clogging with mud. Tears up the lawn a bit. You'll have this regardless of fence system you buy of course. But following the training plan and having a system with 7 levels of "correction" and a beep-only mode allowed me to have my dog fully trained in less than a week. We did the beep-only training for 3 full days, emphasizing the praise when running back away from wire. I was careful to try to avoid her approaching the line gradually from parallel, and rather tried to have her approach perpendicularly so she'd know exactly where the "bad" place was and to turn 180 deg back from it. On day 4 I turned the collar to shock, I mean correction, level 3. She's a stubborn but smart little 45 lb pit bull mix so I wasn't sure that would be enough, but didn't want to overdue it either. I first tested it on my arm and was surprised that it was a very low level shock, like a tickle. (Nothing like putting your finger in a light socket, that's for sure.). So I put collar on dog and eventually she wandered close to the line, and I was shocked when she was shocked and let out a loud yelp while jumping a couple feet in the air! Geez I felt really bad, honestly, but hoped that was a major learning point (which it was!) and I proceeded to reprogram the collar down to lowest correction setting of 1. We then did a few days of training still on a long leash and if she got too close she'd jump back as soon as the unit beeped. On day 8 I wasn't thinking and didn't notice that another family member took the collar off her, and took her out on long leash. She saw deer and bolted at them, ripping leash out of my hand. But she stopped right before the flagged, and just barked and whined at the deer 30' away. Then is when I knew this is really working, and I started off-leash training the next day. I'm now at day 11 in total which includes 3-4 days of off-leash and it's going great so far. No breaches, even when barreling full speed to the line with temptations of more deer, squirrels, neighbors and dogs. She has hound mixed in and a very strong prey drive so frankly I'm shocked this is working so well. So far so good! Units works exactly as reported. Default range from wire (set to 10) activates the collar precisely 5' from the wire thru my entire 750' run. Wire held up great- had no breaks even with the trencher often putting stress on the wire. I think the instructions are very good. I did not need to call their support line for anything. But one that that was confusing me for a while was the listing of the 3.different levels of dogs (timid, active, and I think hyper) and then the various shock level setting under each of those, but how do you select 'active" for instance. Eventually I noticed that "active" was written on my box's packaging label, so those are how the systems come and luckily the active one was the proper one for my size/type dog. So hopefully there's no letdown with the equipment or my dog starts breaching the fence. If anything like that happens I'll update this review, but right now I'm extremely please that I selected the Extreme brand dog fence. And bonus of made in USA. Thanks. ***Update 4 months later*** Happy to report the system has continued to work great and the collar battery was still working after 4 full months. (but I could hear that the beep was weaker when I tested the collar today, so I'm replacing the battery now just to be safe. I hope the replacements last as long as the original!) My dog only breached the fence once in the 4 months, and that was shortly after installing it, when I think she "forgot" after seeing one of her dog friends being walked down the street. Hasn't left the yard since which is really impressive being the daily teasings she has of neighborhood dogs, deer, etc. Great that she can tear around our acre of yard freely, and we can take her less frequently to the dog park for exercise. Looking forward to the warmer weather and her hanging out with us on the patio without needing to be leashed. Happy customer, happy dog. ... show more

We’ve lost 4 dogs to the busy road by our house. This has saved the ones I have. We’ve had it for a little over a year and it’s been great…except one of the collars already quit on us and the other one doesn’t always work. Our dogs almost got hit because of it. We’ve replaced the batteries several times and my husband was disappointed on how quickly they went through batteries. I didn’t realize how expensive the collars are. I would have given this 5 stars if it weren’t for that . I just had to purchase another collar ... show more
