  • Almost...
Just a couple of notes... The orange cover is rubberized and protects the green plastic meter. You purchase additional/different leads - lookup Extech TL809 and you can see the different lead kits that are available. The backlight doesn't stay on when you turn it no. You have to press and hold the button for a few seconds for the light to come on, and while it's on you can press and hold it for a few sends to turn it off (all good). Unfortunately once you turn on the backlight it will automatically turn off after 15 seconds (disappointing). For some (annoying to me) reason, the unit beeps for each click as you rotate the dial to different functions. You can hear and feel the click so I don't know why it needs to beep too. Some have reported that it doesn't have a beep for a continuity tester, however it does have one. You have to select the correct mode (using the LPF/M button) to hear the beep. It comes with a CD with the Users Guide in a PDF file (it also comes with a pre-printed Users Guide). Extech has their own web site. ... show more

  • Get what you pay for or a little less
I left my beloved Simpson 260 in the office of a client over Thanksgiving weekend. The place was broken into and my 38 year old Simpson was part of their booty. That meter had survived 38 years of near constant travel--all 50 states, most of Europe and a good deal of Middle East and some of Asia. I am old school and OLD, so that meter was ideal. Go digital, everyone said. Fluke is great, but over priced they said. So I purchased perhaps the slowest multimeter in the universe. Yeah, it has lots of features for the $. About 1/3 the cost of a similar Fluke. It works, but it is sooooo sloooooow. I started doubting myself when testing it out. Why no reading? Oh, go get a snack or a drink and then you might see the digits. Of course that is a stretch, but this much is true, the time to read either voltage or resistance in real life WORK situations is indeed slow. I expected some slow compared to the analog Simpson. But, on a major check out, it grew tiresome waiting on the meter EVERY point. The more "bench" stuff, cap, and resistor testing is nice and a bit slow. To me, it was less of an issue in those modes. Side by side with an old GW//Instek bench DMM, the accuracy was right on the money. Backlight is a real issue. Have to turn it on....and have not found how to keep it on for any length of time. Big issue for some of what I need it for. Menu structure and keystrokes seem ok. Not the most intuitive, but then I am used to an analog meter. So I can accept some learning curve. Still on $75---not throw away, but not great value. For occasional use, it should be just fine. But there is, I have learned, a reason you see real Pros using Fluke. I try not to be swayed by a brand, but based on my early use of this unit, I can see why a pro would be disgusted with it in about 5 minutes. Again, you get what you pay for and if you are a limited user and have a tight budget it does offer a lot of features for the price. That reminded me that selecting tools is not just specs and $ to balance---you have to think about how you will use the equipment. Slow and no backlight (no always on for backlight) have colored my view of the unit. Perhaps that says more about my failure to research and test then it does about the meter or manufacturer. Not gonna send it back. It just might be the tuition I have had to pay to find what will serve me like my old Simpson did. ... show more

  • Inaccurate and overly sensitive
The non contact voltage tester has a mind of its own, and the temperature probe is about 20 degrees off as compared to two other meters and a fieldpiece thermometer. The thermocouple also goes into OL if you touch it while it's in use suggesting a wiring issues. Everything else seems to work but with the other issues it makes me debate the accuracy of all of it. I bought the extech on Flir's reputation since I've used Flir equipment in the past. I'm thinking now I should have bought a fluke or fieldpiece. ... show more

  • Works great but very slow response time
For a unit that has all the functions this one has, it is a great buy! I would recommend it to anyone who has the patience to wait for the accurate response. It takes time for the meter to display the correct reading. If you are impatient you may not get the final (correct) display information. The display changes over time as it adjust for accuracy. It would be better if it did not display any value other than 'processing' while calculating the results. But it appears to be very accurate. The time delay does make continuity checking difficult. I would have only rated it 3 stars for that reason. However, given all its functionality, that set back is not as much of an issue! I'd say buy it and deal with the delay! For the price it is a no brainer! ... show more

  • circuit board melted after light use
I have had this meter for about two years, and only use it for bench testing my hobby electronics witch run off batteries. and for some reason the circuit board fried and melted the inside battery holder. there's a defect in this meter. I would not buy one again.

  • Best Meter I own
I've had at least three or four meters over my life time and this is the best one I've owned. I bought it specifically to isolate Ghost Voltages, but it has a lot of functionality beyond that. It's accurate, durable and easy to use. It's my second ExTech and I would certainly buy it again.

  • For the money it appears to be a great value.
A Fluke meter may be the gold standard but as a hobbyest I can't, don't t want to spend that kind of money. I use a Fluke at work, but I can't see why this Extech meter wouldn't work just as well. For a homeowner or hobbyest this is a great meter.

  • Great Product with a Design Flaw.
There are a lot of units with a defect that ruin the resistence meassure option and show milliVolts instead, or similar malfunctions with some of the units to meassure (mine cant meassure AC Voltage). The multimeter is great with a great ammount of units and functions, and the best presicion on this range of price, but it is a bet if you can get one that does not broke after a few months. ... show more
