The rods that came were longer but skinnier than the original Whirlpoop (you read that right, it's poop!) 50 gallon electric tank. It works great and it's amazing how after 6 years how much crud gets on these rods and insulates it from heating the water. As for the package they sell, honestly, you're just going to get the rods. MAYBE... and that's a BIG MAYBE since if you're going to do this yourself, you probably already have the socket to remove the rods. I did but I bought it on the side of caution and it adds a decent 1 1/2 pipe to my toolbox. The thermostat is no the same as the Whirlpoop since the temp adjustment is on the bottom and the OE is on the top so the cover plate will not work. Waste of money at least for the bottom one which is usually what goes bad but if you're going to change the bottom rod, might as well do the top so I highly recommend getting just the 2 rods which worked well. As for location of where the wire goes, it really doesn't matter as it's electric and as long as each end has one wire, it'll work so the orientation of where the wires go doesn't matter (mine was backwards; upper left was upper right and vice versa). ... show more

Had an A O Smith that had been used all of 1yr and 2 days... then nothing. Bought this kit, replaced upoper element, but that wasn't the problem. Not a lot of time on my hands so got ticked and just replaced everything: not only do I have hot water again, it's BETTER hot water, faster, longer. These elements are a little bigger, and describing them to a friend that has rental houses (and actually keeps them up, really nice) said it sounds like I may have got a unit that had the wrong elements in it, and that's why we had to adjust water, hotter, when filling it up (we should have been able to run a shower AND take a bath from HWT specs!) It works perfectly now! AND, the included tool is a good one; anyone with experience in water tanks knows there are flimsy tools out there that bend, so you cannot get the elements out, especially if it's a few years old! This tool is solid!!! Zero fear of it bending. ... show more

The only complaint is with this kit is the tool that came with the kit was too weak to turn the heater rods it bent several times trying to remove the them from the tank. Still a great value...

Our hot water heater wasn't hot enough, it ran completely out of hot water within a few minutes. Forget about multiple people taking a shower back to back, the water was cold before the second shower even started. We thought we were going to need to replace out hot water heater, as it is nearly 10 years old. Then we saw a video of someone replacing parts and decided we would give it a go. We purchased this kit as it has everything we needed. We replaced each part and now we have hot water. We don't need to replace our hot water heater, its still working great, it just needed some new parts. BTW, we are not plumbers, we watched a video on YouTube and replaced it easily. ... show more
