Top Amazon Reviews

  • Practical Driver/Non-ethusiast review:
Style: IX Pattern Name: Detector
Summary: It more than paid for itself in the first day of a cross country drive. Day to day utility is excellent, especially in big/new cities. I previously owned an Escort 8500 X50 which in the early 2000's had been a big purchase that had served me well in driving cross country and ultimately on day to day use. Having lived in Virginia for several years, where radar detectors are not legal, I had not looked to upgrade. In having to make a drive to the west coast very recently, I was near overwhelmed in the amount of options. After hours of review, I selected the Escort iX Long Range detector. I am very satisfied with the purchase. Range: There are some online reviews that demonstrate the significant range and potential for detection from around bends//corners. I was not let down in this regard. There were several time when the iX notified me at either significant distances or from around bends. It terms of safety and potential expenses, the purchase paid for itself inside of a day. My passengers, some of who have detectors have likewise been impressed by the range. Display: Granted I do not drive a convertible, but I have found the display to be very adequate. Admittedly, I have found the voice prompts to be useful as I prefer not to take my eyes off the road to look at the display. Brightness has not been an issue. Volume: Setting the volume was NOT as intuitive as a volume wheel. I recommend spending time to ensure you have it at maximal vs preferred volume prior to relying on it for daily use. Since setting it, the initial burst remains loud enough for me to hear, even with the music at significant volume and with the sunroof open. I prefer the automatic sound dimming after the initial loud alert, although I can understand if some would want this as an option to disable. I have not bothered to tinker with the settings as the initial burst often gets my attention and I prefer not to have to reach down to mute it. GPS recognition: Seems superfluous at first glance and maybe adds to the price, but being able to proceed along a daily commute routine major streets without the automatic doors of local stores etc is very nice. I was not sure I would use this much, but I have found this to be one of my favorite features. In terms of traveling along new routes/cities and even on some freeway, I have found the red light camera notifications invaluable and very helpful. Power plug: I had no issues with the power source and I appreciated the pass through for an additional USB source to power through the source. App: I used it on the first day of my cross country trip and it was helpful, but the range of the detector was the selling point for me. If you are reaching up to buy this, not subscribing/getting the app will not decrease the value of the detector itself. If this is an easily affordable purchase, then the app is probably worth trailing. Attachment: I have had no issues with the unit detaching. If anything, it took me a while to figure out how to remove it. This includes several bumpy routes and some gravel/dirt roads. The sticky attachment has not given me any issues. My previous suction cup attachments on the X50 were folded over when removed on a hot day and ultimately gave me fits. Anecdotal issue, but point being, I have had no issues with the current attachments. Voice: I do not mind the announcement and I find it useful. I particularly appreciate the "Red light camera ahead" announcements that are prevalent where I now reside. Speed limit: The announcement for lowering speed can be annoying if you hover along the limit. This has not proven to be an issue for me. I am not clear on how to update the local speed limits on the unit, but I do not rely up it. Caution if you do as it seemed to thing that every interstate had a limit of 70 mph whether or not the limit was lower or higher. Overall: The unit paid for itself during my initial cross country drive, in both safety and potential expenses. Very impressed with the range and detection from around bends. Since arriving at my destination and with continued use, I have found to have again paid for itself and then some. I am keeping it for my daily commute as I find it reliable in its purpose, with significant range and with worthwhile features as compared to my admittedly older model. It was a splurge for me to buy this model, but one I have recommended to friends and family. ... show more

  • 5 stars BUT which SELLER you select is VERY important
Style: IX Pattern Name: Detector
I bought this when item said SOLD BY and SHIPPED BY AMAZON. The unit works great. I love it. It is loud (some reviews said it is not). You can adjust the sound level. I play music in the car, and I can hear the audible aleerts. The windshield sticky mount works great, but I'm not sure how it will hold up if you move it back and forth between different vehicles. The magnetic mount (attaches unit to the windshield mount) works great. I was suspicious it would drop off on very bumpy roads, but it does not. Very impressive design. I tested the self-learning by driving to a convenience store once a day for 3 days to see if it would "forget" the X-band alerts for that location. It did. The big nuisance is, and will get worse as more cars on the road have higher tech safety features, the unit goes off when you pull behind (within 50 to 100 feet) of a vehicle that has the new backup and/or blind spot monitoring system on their vehicle; these features use K-band radar at the same frequency as police radar. BEEEEP !! This is not the fault of the Escort device. On a recent trip from Wisconsin to Nevada (I-80) and back using I-90, the Escort IX gave awesome alerts a mile or more in advance on flat stretches of interstate highways. However, with instant-on radar being used by police, sometimes you get less of a warning. The features of the Escort are relatively easy to turn off or on using the menu system on the device. All the options are spoken by the device. Recently, I got hit by laser, and the ESCORT device detected it. (No, I was not speeding). There have also been a few POP alerts. So from what I can tell after almost 2 months, is the device is working great. After you get one, make sure to install the FREE software from Escort and UPDATE the firmware and the database. You get database updates free for 90 days I think. Firmware updates are for the life of the unit. (These policies can be changed by Escort at any time.) ################################################################################## You will want to buy this from a seller that you find on the approved list of sellers at the ESCORT site. I bought this when item said SOLD BY and SHIPPED BY AMAZON. The unit works great. I love it. You want a warranty and be able to get service / replacement if needed, right ? You want to be able to get updated firmware when it is released? You want to be able to subscribe to the database (speed camera, etc) updates? ... show more
